True Detective: Night Country

The year is starting out strong as the highly-anticipated fourth season of crime anthology series True Detective arrives on Sky Atlantic. Set in Alaska, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as detectives who are tasked with investigating when eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. With a new episode dropping every week, True Detective: Night Country will carry you through the January blues!

Mary & George

Period dramas are all the rage right now and for good reason. Inspired by the extraordinary true story of Mary Villiers, 2024 is the year you’ll get to see Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitizine star as mother-and-son duo Mary & George Villiers. The series explores how Mary moulded her son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Rising from humble beginnings, they became the richest and most influential players the English court has seen. Trust us when we say, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Ferrari

From director Michael Mann, comes the story of Formula 1 ex-racer and automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari. It’s the summer of 1957 and bankruptcy threatens the factory he and Laura, his wife, built from nothing ten years ago. Their tumultuous marriage has been battered by the tragic loss of their son, Dino, and Ferrari grapples with acknowledging his son, Piero, whom he shares with Lina Lardi.

Meanwhile, his drivers’ determination to win pushes them to the limits as they embark on the Mille Miglia – a treacherous 1000-mile race across Italy.

Fire Country

After ranking as US network CBS’ top-rated new TV series of 2023, the wait is almost over as Fire Country will be making its UK debut early next year.

The perfect show for those who are after an easy watch, Fire Country tells the story of a young convict, Bode Donovan, who seeks redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison-release firefighting programme. But the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural Californian hometown, the place he left five years ago and where all his troubles began.

Lee

Lee tells the story of Lee Miller, the pioneering American war correspondent and photographer who covered World War II in Europe for British Vogue. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and muse choosing to defy expectations and rules of the time to report from the frontline. With her Rolleiflex camera, Lee gave a voice to the voiceless and her photographs of the war and its consequences remain as some of the most significant and historically important of WW2.

This film is not a biopic, instead it explores the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life.

House of the Dragon S2

This show needs little introduction, but we’ll give you one anyway. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of the great civil war that tore the House of Targaryen family apart.

After a hugely successful first season, you won’t have long to wait to get your fantasy fix as season two is due to hit screens in Summer 2024!

Funny Woman S2

After a successful first series, Funny Woman is returning for a second run. In the first series, Barbara – a young working class woman from Blackpool – moved to London where she realised her dream and became a TV comedy star, Sophie Straw.

The second series begins with Sophie discovering that ‘having a voice’ doesn’t necessarily mean that people will listen and that fame can be fleeting. Fed up with roles in old school comedy shows, Sophie decides to give arthouse cinema a go in the hopes that it’s more progressive. Spoiler alert: it’s not. Not letting that stop her, Sophie decides to create her own comedy show so she can tell authentic stories in all their glory.

Jason Statham stars in this action movie which follows one man’s quest for revenge as it takes on national stakes after he is revealed to have previously been an operative for a powerful organisation known as “Beekeepers”. The action-packed trailer sees Jason Statham’s character working to expose the corruption and fighting the system - all in the name of vengeance.

TED

Now, for all of you who were fans of global hit film franchise TED, you’ll be pleased to know that the bear is set to take over the small screen in a brand-new prequel series. The story begins in 1993 with Ted now living back at home with his best friend John, after his moment of fame has passed. If you enjoyed the TED movies, then you’ll be sure to love this new series!

The Sympathizer

The Sympathizer is an espionage satirical comedy based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The story is about the struggles of a half-Vietnamese, half-French communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent exile in the US. The series sees Robert Downey Jr play multiple roles and if the trailer is anything to go by, it’s a must-watch!

Starring Danny Dyer in his television comedy debut and authored by Ryan Sampson, Mr Bigstuff is a story about two estranged brothers who try to patch up a sibling rivalry that may well be beyond repair. This six-part comedy explores broken families, fragile masculinity and carpet sales.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Inspired by the real-life story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a limited series coming to Sky in 2024. The story begins when Lali arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, and shortly after arrival, he was made one of the tätowierer (tattooists), charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. One day, he meets Gita when tattooing her prisoner number on her arm. They experience love at first sight, and so begins a courageous, unforgettable, and human story. Under constant guard from a volatile SS officer Baretzki, Lali and Gita became determined to keep each other alive.

Around 60 years later, Lali meets novice writer Heather Morris. Recently widowed, Lali finds the courage to tell the world his story. In recounting his story to Heather, Lali, in his 80s, faces the traumatic ghosts of his youth and relives his own memories of falling in love in the most horrific of places.

This deviously twisted coming-of ‘rage’ story, is an upcoming female driven drama adapted from the novel Sweetpea by C.J. Skuse. The series sees Ella Purnell star as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower on a journey of self-discovery. Rhiannon doesn’t make much of an impression. She’s overlooked for a promotion, the guy she likes refuses to commit and her dad is very unwell. When everything in her life turns upside down, Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and the wallflower is gone. But as her life transforms can she keep her murdering a secret?
