
The 1980s are known for a lot of cool things – with the world seemingly full of endless possibilities with technological advances like the Game Boy, the CD and the Walkman seeming like the greatest things ever invented.
So, naturally, the era brought with it a whole heap of incredible films with it too. Whether you’re into sci-fi, comedy, or a classic drama, there truly was something for everyone.
Movies created in this era are often still considered to this day some of the best of all time.

Superman II (1980)
Christopher Reeve stars as the Kryptonian superhero on Earth who is ready to give up his alter-ego for a quiet life as Clark Kent with his love, Lois Lane. However, when supervillain General Zod is freed from imprisonment, and threatens to destroy the Earth, Superman has to put on the suit once more to restore peace and safety to the planet.
E.T: The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
When an alien is accidentally left behind on Earth by his spaceship, he is saved by a young boy named Elliot. While the government and others try to track the alien down, Elliot and the alien, who he dubs E.T., form an unbreakable lifelong friendship that surpasses all galaxies.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Admiral James T Kirk, Captain Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise find their lives upended by the return of the evil Khan Noonien Singh, who has escaped from a 15-year exile.
Determined to get his revenge on Kirk, Khan forms a plan that centres on acquiring the Genesis Device – a terraforming device that can create worlds.
Soon it’s up to those at Starfleet Academy and USS Enterprise to stop him before it’s too late, and Khan turns the device into a weapon rather than a source of good.
Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
Action-comedy starring Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a rebellious cop who heads to Beverly Hills to seek justice after his childhood friend is murdered in Detroit. There, he finds his old friend Jenny Summers and begins to suspect her art dealer boss Victor Maitland may be somehow involved. However, Beverly Hills PD lieutenant Bogomill stands in his way from finding the answers he seeks.

Ghostbusters (1984)
Columbia University professors Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler have their lives changed forever when they discover a ghost in the New York Public Library.
While they think this finally proves their paranormal research efforts, they are instead fired from their positions as no one believes them.
So, they instead buy a disused firehouse and launch their own business, Ghostbusters – a ghostly-led exterminator style business for ghouls rather than vermin.
With the help of nuclear-powered equipment they invent to capture the ghosts, soon the team find themself needed more than ever as they discover New York is full of phantoms they weren’t quite prepared for.

Gremlins (1984)
A gadget salesman gets more than he bargained for when he buys a ‘mogwai’ for his son, Billy, while in Chinatown. The small pet comes with three rules: never expose them to bright light, never get them wet, and don’t feed them after midnight.
However, that is much easier said than done, and a series of unfortunate events leads to the creation of a gang of gremlins they need to get under control before they completely destroy Christmas.
The Karate Kid (1984)
Ralph Macchio stars as teenager Daniel, whose life is turned upside down when his mother moves them to Southern California for a new life. Unfortunately for Daniel, he quickly becomes a target for bullies from the esteemed Cobra Kai karate dojo – especially Johnny Lawrence, with them both after the same girl.
Thankfully, Daniel finds help in Mr Miyagi (the late, great Pat Morita), his apartment complex’s repairman who has a fierce karate history of his own. Daniel gains confidence and a new sense of self while training with Mr Miyagi, climaxing at the annual karate tournament where he has to face his enemy.

The Neverending Story (1984)
The Neverending Story follows Bastian, a young boy who, after ducking into a bookstore to escape the school bullies, finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping a dark force called Nothing, from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantasia.
Soon he begins to realise that he may be the young warrior Fantasia needs to survive.

Out of Africa (1985)
Meryl Streep stars as Karen von Blixon, a Danish aristocrat who trades in her life to join her husband in South Africa after he buys a coffee plantation.
When she discovers her husband is unfaithful, a torn Karen begins to find life and love again when she meets big-game hunter, Denys (Robert Redford).
Soon she finds herself torn between the regal life she’s become accustomed to, and the simple life that he leads.
Weird Science (1985)
Two high school geeks Gary and Wyatt, fresh out of luck with the women in their lives, decide to create the perfect woman on a computer – but then a freak electrical surge causes the woman to come to life.
Naming her Lisa, the boys soon discover the cool side of life as well as the confidence they need to stand up to the high school bullies Ian and Max.
All they have to do is keep Lisa hidden from Wyatt’s juiced-up jerk of a big brother, Chet.
The comedy comes with an all-star cast including Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Bill Paxton, with supermodel Kelly LeBrock as Lisa.
The Back to the Future Trilogy (1985)
In one of the all-time best sci-fi comedies, teen Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) finds his life upended as he’s thrown back to 1955 by a Delorian car that’s been turned into a time machine by his scientist pal, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd).
With time running against him, he has to figure out a way to get back to 1985 before he disrupts the timeline and he ceases to exist – which is easier said than done when he accidentally disrupts how his parents first meet and fall in love.

Top Gun (1986)
Tom Cruise stars as reckless and cocky Pete Mitchell – call sign Maverick – who joins the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School to become the best of the best as a fighter pilot.
However, his attitude doesn’t sit well with fellow members of the school, in particular the competitive Tom Kasansky, aka Iceman (Val Kilmer).
At least he has his best friend Nicholas Bradshaw, aka Goose, on side. As Maverick grapples with his past, and deals with a potential romantic interest, he needs to show he can overcome his rebellious side in order to win the sought-after Top Gun Trophy.
