Sometimes you need something good to watch – but you don’t always have the time to dedicate yourself to a three-hour epic movie.

We get it, but thankfully Sky Cinema has something for everyone when you’re in need of a little ‘me’ time, even if it’s just a couple of hours.

So once the kids are in bed, or you want to unwind with your feet up on the sofa after a day at work, or you simply have a couple of hours to kill, here are some of the biggest and best movies Sky Cinema has to offer – from timeless classics and heart-racing horrors to Oscar-winners and fun for all the family.

Lost in Translation (2003)

Bob Harris (Bill Murray), a Hollywood actor whose star is fading, arrives in Tokyo to appear in a series of whiskey commercials. Falling headfirst into a midlife crisis, he meets and befriends Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young graduate in the city with her husband and having an existential crisis of her own.

Looper (2012)

Runtime: 119 mins

Based in a future where black market time-travel is possible, hired hitman Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds himself in trouble with the mob he works for when they send a future version of himself (Bruce Willis) back in time to assassinate him.

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Runtime: 115 mins

The third movie in the franchise – following The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum sees Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), a former assassin for the CIA suffering from memory loss, as he continues his search for information about his past.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Runtime: 117 mins

In this three-time Oscar-winning movie, Matthew McConaughey stars as cowboy Ron Woodroof, a man whose life is upended forever when he discovers he’s HIV positive.

Woodroof fights the ticking clock on his life by establishing an underground medication smuggling ring, bringing non-FDA approved drugs across the border from Mexico in order to help him and others with HIV to survive. Jared Leto co-stars as transgender woman Rayon, who becomes an unlikely ally in the new venture.

The Lego Movie (2014)

Runtime: 101 mins

Something for all the family, The Lego Movie, stars the voice of Chris Pratt as Emmet, a Lego construction worker who finds himself hilariously out of his depth when he’s accidentally identified as The Special. Soon, he’s on an adventure to save his world from evil tyrant Lord Business (Will Ferrell) as he plans to take over the world. Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman are among the all-star cast.

The King’s Speech (2010)

Runtime: 118 mins

Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech follows the true story of the initial weeks of King George VI’s reign, as he tries to overcome his debilitating stammer.

Thrust into the King’s role after his brother, Edward, decides to abdicate the throne, George - or Bertie to his family – enlists the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue in order to overcome his impediment and rouse the nation with hope as World War II looms.

Arrival (2016)

Runtime: 116 mins

In Arrival, Amy Adams stars as linguistics professor Louise Banks, who helps a team of investigators when spaceships touch down on Earth.

Attempting to unravel the mystery of why they were there, Banks and the team have to figure out a way to communicate with the aliens, as the threat of war looms over the world.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Runtime: 120 mins

The fourth film in the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road tracks the story of Max Rockatansky, who is living in a post-apocalyptic world where essentials like water and petrol are hard to come by. Joining forces with Imperator Furiosa, Max goes up against an evil cult leader and his army of supporters in an all out war - with a lot of car chases.

Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough and Zoë Kravitz also star. The film won six Oscars.

Cloverfield (2008)

Runtime: 85 mins

One of the great modern horrors, Cloverfield follows a group of New Yorkers whose lives are destroyed when a giant creature descends upon the city and begins to cause apocalyptic levels of chaos.

Told through found footage from a camcorder in Central Park, Cloverfield tracks five central characters as they attempt to rescue their friend and find safety, as their world literally falls to pieces in front of their eyes.

Barbie (2023)

Runtime: 114 mins

Margot Robbie stars as Barbie, who lives an idealistic life in the world of Barbieland with Ken (Ryan Gosling) nearby and totally in love with her. However, when she begins to have an existential crisis, she must enter the real world and discover what it means to be human – specifically a woman – in the modern era, and all the ups and downs that holds.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Runtime: 108 mins

Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) have the perfect relationship – until they don’t. Wrecked by the discovery Clementine has paid to have her memory of him wiped from her brain after their break-up, Joel opts to go through the same procedure. Only, as he goes through the memories, he begins to realise why they fell in love in the first place, and maybe the memory of love is something too precious to be deleted.

Kate Winslet was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Clementine, with the film winning Original Screenplay at the 2005 ceremony.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Runtime: 97 mins

Loosely based on Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones’s Diary sees the titular character (Reneé Zellweger) vow to change her life as she enters her 32nd year of singledom. Tracking her exploits in her beloved diary, her love life suddenly takes a dramatic – and hysterical – turn when she finds herself attracting the attention of hot shot lawyer Mark Darcy, and her publishing house boss and certified lothario Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).

Spider-Man (2002)

Runtime: 120 mins

In the first of many iterations of the friendly neighbourhood superhero, Tobey Maguire takes on the suit as Peter Parker, whose life changes forever when he’s bitten by a scientifically-altered spider, giving him the ability to shoot webs and climb walls. After the death of his Uncle Ben, he decides to use his power to become a vigilante – but soon he discovers that those close to him may become his enemy in the process.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Runtime: 105 mins

Columbia University professors Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler have their lives changed forever when they discover a ghost in the New York Public Library.

While they think this finally proves their paranormal research, they are instead shamed and fired from their roles as no one believes them.

So, they decide to buy a disused firehouse and launch their own business, Ghostbusters – a ghostly-led exterminator style business for ghouls rather than vermin.

With the help of nuclear-powered equipment they invent to capture the ghosts, soon the team find themself needed more than ever as they discover New York is full of phantoms they weren’t quite prepared for.

Mad Max (1979)

Runtime: 85 mins

Set in a dystopian future Australia where the world’s resources are in short supply, ‘Mad’ Max Rokatansky (Mel Gibson) is a police officer turned vigilante where revenge is on everyone’s mind. After the death of a motorcycle gang leader, Mad Max finds himself on his own personal quest for vengeance after his wife and son are hunted down and murdered in response. Now he wants to make sure those responsible are served the justice they deserve.

Top Gun (1986)

Runtime: 100 mins

Tom Cruise stars as reckless and cocky Pete Mitchell – call sign Maverick – who joins the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School to become the best of the best as a fighter pilot.

However, his attitude doesn’t sit well with fellow members of the school, in particular the competitive Tom Kasansky, aka Iceman (Val Kilmer). At least he has his best friend Nicholas Bradshaw, aka Goose, on side. As Maverick grapples with his past, and deals with a potential romantic interest, he needs to show he can overcome his rebellious side in order to win the sought-after Top Gun Trophy.

May December (2023)

Runtime: 117 mins

In a film very loosely based on real events, May December tracks a married couple with a huge age gap, twenty years after their relationship became tabloid news.

As their relationship’s origin becomes the basis of a movie, actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives at their home in order to study the couple for her portrayal of Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore), whom at the age of 36 was caught sleeping with the then 13-year-old Joe Yoo (Charles Melton) at the pet store where they both worked. With the couple later eloping and having a family of their own, they are trying to live a quiet life, but Elizabeth’s presence brings up long-buried trauma and issues they had tried to ignore.
