The Last of Us

The year started strong, with the arrival of The Last of Us beating away any January blues. Based on the PlayStation game of the same name, the series brought to life the post-apocalyptic genre and turned it into a TV masterpiece. Just like the video game, the series is a tale of love and loss with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey starring as the lead characters, Joel and Ellie. If you don’t want to take our word for it, the slew of 5* critic reviews should be enough to convince you that this show deserves a spot on any Best of 2023 list.

Succession S4

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and truer words have never been spoken as 2023 was also the year that hit-drama Succession finished forever. After four seasons of watching the Roy siblings fight, manipulate and scheme for control of Waystar Royco, we finally discovered who came out on top. Ending a series on a high is no easy feat but the final episode of Succession cemented its place as one of the best shows of all time – let alone 2023.

The Lazarus Project S2

After a hit first series, 2023 also saw the return of sci-fi thriller The Lazarus Project. Picking up where the first left off, series two began with the world stuck in a three-week time loop and The Lazarus Project team back trying to break the cycle. With a talented cast, including Paapa Essiedu as the lead and Joe Barton screenwriting, what you can guarantee is compelling performances that will have you hooked from the first episode.

Brassic S5

Very few shows can still deliver the laughs five series in but somehow Brassic does just that. Fresh from a win at the 2023 RTS Awards, the Northern comedy returned in September for more heists, hijinks and hilarity. With Lee Mack joining the cast for the fifth outing, it basically guaranteed Brassic’s spot on the Best of 2023 list. And with a Christmas special on the way to round out the year, it really is the gift that keeps on giving.

And Just Like That… S2

Whether or not you’re a fan of Carrie and pals, you can’t deny that And Just Like That… gets people talking. And after a successful first season, the new chapter of the Sex and the City story returned with a bang in June 2023. The second season saw the return (and subsequent departure) of Aidan, the demise of Che and Miranda’s relationship and the revelation that Stanford has become a Shinto monk in Japan. With love, friendship and heartbreak an ever-running thread throughout the series, And Just Like That… still delivers all the feels just like its predecessor.

Funny Woman

Book adaptation series are all the rage and Funny Woman is exactly that. Based on Funny Girl, the best-selling novel by Nick Hornby, the show stars Gemma Arterton as Barbara – a feisty Blackpool beauty queen who decides to move to London to make a name for herself. Set against the backdrop of the male-dominated world of the 60s, Barbara traverses her way through to become a comedy superstar and nation’s sweetheart. The perfect easy-watch, making it a shoo-in for the 2023 Best of list.

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived

This inspiring documentary-film tells the story of stuntman David Holmes who was selected to play Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double in the first Harry Potter film. Over the years Daniel and David built a close bond before a tragic accident took place on the set of the penultimate Potter film, leaving David paralysed with a spinal injury. The documentary, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and sit-down interviews with Daniel, David and many more, is a moving story of resilience and one that will leave you feeling incredibly inspired.

The Lovers

Just as summer came to an end, The Lovers - a brand-new rom-com TV series - arrived on Sky with glowing reviews flooding in the day the first episode dropped. The series, set in Belfast, follows foul-mouthed supermarket worker Janet who meets Seamus, a political broadcaster, and instantly they clash. But over time and despite being complete opposites, the pair find themselves drawn to each other. With everything you’d want from a rom-com, The Lovers is one of those shows that has you hooked from the first episode!

Telemarketers

What’s not to love about a documentary that tells the story of a huge scam? And Telemarketers, the three-part series about two employees who uncovered a billion-dollar telemarketing swindle, is exactly that. In a New Jersey call centre in the 2000s, two young employees – Sam Lipman-Stern and Patrick J Pespas – began to question exactly what they were selling. So, over two decades the pair decided to investigate and expose the corruption that was going on. With video footage of their 20-year undercover investigation, this documentary reveals the dangers of the telemarketing world.

Poker Face

After a hugely successful run in the US, fans were desperate to know if the whodunnit detective series Poker Face would be coming to the UK. And in May they got their wish, with the series landing on Sky Max. Led by Natasha Lyonne, the series features an all-star cast and is a modern take on your murder-mystery-of-the-week style show. With reviews praising Lyonne’s performance and with Knives Out director Rian Johnson at the helm, Poker Face deserves its place in our Best of 2023 list.
