Everything you need to know about The Trip
In this critically acclaimed Sky Original comedy series, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon join forces with filmmaker Michael Winterbottom for whirlwind culinary tours while reflecting on their life and careers in The Trip.
Semi-improvised and semi-fictional, The Trip started in 2010, with Coogan trying to impress his food-loving girlfriend by accepting a commission from The Observer to go on a restaurant tour of the Lake District.
But when his girlfriend splits up with him, he reluctantly brings old pal Rob Brydon along instead, with the pair bickering through a string of culinary delights about everything from their celebrity impersonations to how they live their lives.
Equal parts funny and heartfelt, The Trip went on to have follow-up series in 2014, 2017 and 2020, with Steve and Rob reuniting to complete new food-inspired treks around the world.
Series five, The Trip to the Northern Lights, was announced in June 2025, this time with the duo heading to Scandinavia as they reflect on ageing, ambition, family and fame – and if they’ll ever retire.
Part sitcom, part travel series, The Trip has won a series of awards, including Coogan taking home a BAFTA for Best Male Performance in a Comedy, and Brydon being nominated for two British Comedy Awards and a BAFTA too.
How many series of The Trip are there?
The Trip has released four series to date since its launch in 2010 – with a fifth series now officially on the way as well.
Each series is six episodes, approximately half an hour each.
The trips in question are:
Series One: The Trip Around England (2010)
Focusing on the north of England, the pair head to restaurants around Lancashire, Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales, while trying to one-up each other’s celebrity impressions and gags.
Series Two: The Trip to Italy (2014)
Reunited for another string of reviews, this time Steve and Rob decide to follow in the footsteps of the early 19th century Great Romantics – going on a journey from Piedmont in the North of Italy to the Isle of Capri.
Series Three: The Trip to Spain (2017)
Now on a coast-to-coast trip through Spain, Steve and Rob start in the port village of Getaria and travel through historic Sos del Rey Catolico, the Dinosaur Route, Cuenca and La Mancha before ending up in Malaga. All the while squabbling and wedging Marlon Brando into the Spanish Inquisition.
Series Four: The Trip to Greece (2020)
Now intending to follow the footsteps of Odysseus, Steve and Rob head to Greece. In an adventure from Troy to Ithaca, the pair have just six days to complete the trip, making whistle stop tours via the beach home famed for Mamma Mia!, Athens, and King Nestor's home of Pilos.
Series Five: The Trip to The Northern Lights (TBC)
Five years on from their trip through the Mediterranean, Steve and Rob now head to Scandinavia delivering their trademark blend of wit, rivalry and playful introspection while navigating everything from sculptural Swedish hotels to remote Norwegian fishing huts.
Who stars in The Trip?
The two leading men of the series are:
Steve Coogan
Starting his career in the 80s as part of the comedy team behind satire Spitting Image, Coogan is now best known for portraying bumbling TV presenter Alan Partridge. He is both a comedic and dramatic actor, appearing in family adventure Night at the Museum through to portraying Jimmy Saville in BBC’s The Reckoning. His 2013 film Philomena – which he wrote and starred in alongside Imelda Staunton – earned two Oscar nominations. Throughout his career, he has won six BAFTAs, three British Comedy Awards and one Emmy, and been nominated for a Golden Globe.
Rob Brydon
The Welsh comedian, TV presenter and actor has had a varied career, ranging from hosting BBC’s Would I Lie to You? to the beloved role of Uncle Bryn in the heralded sitcom Gavin and Stacey. In 2023, he made a cameo appearance in 2023 Oscar-nominated movie Barbie alongside Margot Robbie, and in 2024 starred as Lord Dudley in My Lady Jane.
