What happens in Task series finale, ‘A Still Small Voice’?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

Reeling from the revelations of last episode, Tom shares with Aleah everything he knows about the potential mole in their midst – their task force teammate, Anthony Grasso. Now aware that Grasso has been accused of working with the Dark Hearts before, the pair need actual evidence to back their suspicions up.

As a result, they head to Wissahickon Park, where the Dark Hearts abducted Cliff, hoping there may have been evidence left behind. Their hunch works, and they find the car Cliff stole before being taken with his phone inside.

Heading back to the FBI office, they request use of Ray Lyman’s phone, which they suspect Grasso used to lure Cliff away from the original rendezvous point. However, when they retrieve it from the evidence lockup, it’s not the phone they originally took – but they can trace the replacement back to near where Grasso lives.

Elsewhere, as the investigation into the shootout continues, Eryn’s body is finally discovered. Pulled from the water, she’s still clutching a necklace chain in her hands – engraved with her killer Perry’s initials.

Grasso, seemingly aware that the net is closing in on him, visits his sister and shares his plans to turn himself in. While he doesn’t tell her what he’s done, he warns her “some things are going to come out” and admits that, in a bid to get extra money for his family, his decisions have cost the life of a girl, and he’s “suffocating” from the guilt.

Meanwhile, Perry is being put under pressure by senior Dark Heart members to get rid of boss Jayson, with them feeling he fumbled their drug operation by allowing fentanyl to be stolen from under him.

Clearing Up

Vincent meets with Chief Dorsey, informing him that as the shootout resulted in the death of an FBI agent, the Dark Hearts will need to cut ties with everyone involved. Dorsey implies he intends to murder Grasso and make it look like he took his own life, while Vincent calls Perry to command the death of Jayson or face consequences himself.

But Perry, who has long been faithful to Jayson, is struggling with the idea. Currently in hiding with Jayson, he takes a knife but can’t bring himself to do it.

In the meantime, Vincent visits Donna, who shares she heard a conversation about Jayson visiting Maeve (Robbie’s niece), believing she may have the cash from the fentanyl sale. She then tells him where Jayson is hiding out with Perry, and he sends lackeys over to the address.

When news of Eryn’s body reaches Jayson, and how Perry’s chain was in her possession, Jayson takes matters into his own hands and kills him, stabbing him as he swims in a river and telling him “I know what you did”.

Dorsey arrives at Grasso’s house to kill him, but Grasso gets the jump on him, holding him at gunpoint. Vincent then arrives and shoots them both – killing Dorsey outright and leaving Grasso with a bullet wound to the stomach. Down but not beaten, Grasso gets a shot in and kills Vincent. He then flees to Maeve’s house to warn her that the Dark Hearts are coming after her, unaware Kathleen and Tom are monitoring his phone. Realising where they’re going, Tom heads over there as well.

Grasso gets to Maeve’s house and tells her to run with the kids, but she is stopped by Jayson and another member of the Dark Hearts, who demand to know where their money is. Tom and Aleah arrive at the house to help Maeve, but are attacked by Jayson’s henchman, eventually overpowering them. Jayson tries to run using Maeve as a human shield, but Grasso, who has managed to make his way to Jayson’s car, manages to shoot him as he opens the door.

What comes next

While Kathleen is told by her superiors to officially close the case, Grasso is taken to hospital for his wounds, where Tom goes to visit him. Grasso asks for penance, but Tom simply says people punish themselves enough, and he doesn’t need to add to it.

Tom decides to not report the drug money found on the scene, allowing Maeve to move away and start a new life with Harper and Wyatt. He then returns home and makes peace with his daughters, Emily and Sara, before the trio head to the sentencing hearing of Ethan, Tom’s adopted son.

At the hearing, Tom makes an impact statement about Ethan’s mental health and the doctors’ struggle to diagnose him, and how even once they did, the Covid pandemic stopped him from getting the medication and help he needed. It ultimately resulted in him lashing out and killing Tom’s wife, an incident that “now threatens to define his entire life.” Despite this, Tom says he forgives Ethan and will welcome him home when he’s out.

Moving On

As the drama subsides and the team all move on with their lives, Tom – who has been looking after young Sam as a foster parent – finds out child services have found a new family for him. While he’s tempted to remain his carer, he knows that he has the best chance of life somewhere new. After saying goodbye to him, Tom decides to redecorate the room, giving the house a fresh lick of paint.
