The movie received twelve Oscar nominations – the most at that year’s Oscars – and won five, including Best Actor and Best Picture.

Inception (2010)

Widely considered one of the best movies of the 2010s, Inception is the sci-fi hit written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonard DiCaprio. Nominated for eight Oscars, Inception secured four wins including Best Cinematography but lost out to The King’s Speech (more on that later) for Best Picture.

The King’s Speech (2010)

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Another biographical drama, this one tells the story of Ron Woodroof – an electrician in the mid-1980s who is shocked to be diagnosed with AIDS and told he has just 30 days to live. Refusing to give in, he smuggles unapproved drugs into Texas to treat his symptoms and distributes them to fellow AIDS patients by establishing the “Dallas Buyers Club”. Matthew McConaughey’s performance as Woodroof was praised by critics and audiences alike, with some calling it a career best and this sentiment was reflected at the Oscars. The film received six nominations, winning three including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

This Sky Original stars Carey Mulligan and tells the story of a troubled young woman haunted by a tragic event in her past who seeks out revenge against those who have crossed her. The film was nominated in five Oscar categories, winning Best Original Screenplay.

E.T. (1982)

A brilliant movie in which Roberts shines in her portrayal of Brockovich.

The Danish Girl (2015)

Based on the novel The Danish Girl, this movie is inspired by the lives of two Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Eddie Redmayne stars as Elbe – one of the first individuals to undergo gender-affirming surgery - and Alicia Vikander as Wegener. Shrek (2001)

What’s not to love about an animation? Especially one that brought iconic characters like Shrek, Donkey and Lord Farquaad to life on the big screen. The film follows an ogre called Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers, as he finds his home has been taken over by fairy tale creatures who have been banished by Lord Farquaad. But with the help of Donkey, played by Eddie Murphy, Shrek makes a deal with Lord Farquaad that if he rescues Princess Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz, he’ll get control of his swamp back. Shrek offers everything you’d want from an animation, which is why the film received two Oscar nominations and secured the win for Best Animated Feature.
