Doc - Everything you need to know Hero Image

What is Doc about?

Dr Amy Larson is the highly successful Chief of Internal Medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis – however she’s not the warmest person when it comes to both her patients and her colleagues.

After suffering a tragedy in her own life, her work and personal life has begun to unravel. Her marriage to the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer ended, she has a fractured relationship with her teenage daughter and is secretly dating her chief resident.

But all of that is wiped from her memory when, on the way home from work, she gets into a horrific car accident, suffering a traumatic brain injury as a result. When she wakes up, she believes it’s 2016 – with the last eight years completely wiped from her memory.

As she deals with retrograde amnesia, Amy is left to piece together every aspect of her life – and asks ex, Michael, to help her do it.

Can Amy get back to being the once revered doctor she once was? And does this give her a second chance to get things right?

Launching in the US on Fox in January 2025, the series has already been renewed for a second season which premieres this September in the US.

Is Doc based on a true story?

Yes! Doc is based loosely on the story of Italian doctor Pierdante Piccioni, now known under the moniker ‘Doctor Amnesia’.

Dr Piccioni was a successful physician in Italy, when in 2013 his car came off the road in a horrific car accident. When he awoke, he had lost 12 years of his life –believing it was October 2001.

Suffering a traumatic brain injury, Dr Piccioni was unable to recognise his now-adult sons (as he remembered them aged 8 and 11), the fact he was Head of Surgery in Lodi, Italy, or that his mother had died.

He therefore had to start building his life up from scratch, unaware of technological advancements like mobile phones and the internet, as well as significant medical advances.

As he began to recover his memory, he wrote a book about his two co-existing lives, which he later called ‘Meno Dodici’ (or Minus 12).

The brain injury ultimately caused him to have a different outlook on life. As well as the memory loss, he received significant damage to his head and parts of his brain, altering his personality.

He later explained he became more empathetic compared to who he was before. In an interview with People, he revealed his previous nickname was ‘prince of bastards’, but after the crash he worked to repair his personal relationships, giving him a second chance at life.

He comments that he finds his story to be one of hope.
