Everything you need to know about Bridgerton

Bridgerton takes place in the Regency era of the United Kingdom, where King George and Queen Charlotte reign, and The Ton’s high society marriage mart is a cutthroat business.

Every year, women and men make their debut on the mart in the hopes of finding a husband, and with the help of glamorous balls and dances, they aim to meet their match.

Lady Violet Bridgerton and her eight children are one of the most esteemed houses – and some of the most sought-after singletons.

Based on the books by Julia Quinn, each season sees one of the Bridgerton siblings take centre stage as they attempt to find love and marriage.

Season one, The Duke and I, focused on Daphne Bridgerton and her relationship with Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings, while season two, The Viscount Who Loved Me, told Anthony Bridgerton’s enemies-to-lovers relationship with the feisty Kate Sharma.

Season three, released in 2024, was Colin’s love story with childhood friend, Penelope Featherington, and was based on the book Romancing Mister Bridgerton.

However, keeping a watchful eye on The Ton’s goings-on – and all the scandals behind closed doors – is the mysterious Lady Whistledown, an anonymous gossip writer whose newsletters are the must-read of the season.

  • Some violence – mainly fistfights, and one count of a duel

Are there any Bridgerton spin-offs?

Yes, Netflix expanded the Bridgerton universe between seasons two and three, releasing Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was a prequel series that focused on Queen Charlotte and the start of her decades-long love story with King George. It also disclosed in more depth the personal challenges King George faced, particularly regarding his mental health, and how Charlotte helped him through them.

The series was intercut between that time and the show’s “present” day, where Charlotte is desperate for one of her children to sire an heir to the throne.

It also delved into the backstories of Lady Danbury and her loveless marriage, and her close connection to Violet Bridgerton’s father.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is also available now on Netflix.

Will there be a Bridgerton season 4 and when will it be released?

Yes. Bridgerton has been confirmed to be returning for season four—though it’s yet to be confirmed when that will be.

In July 2024, it was confirmed that season four will see Benedict Bridgerton and his story, An Offer from a Gentleman, take centre stage.

The story is the third book in the series, though for reasons unknown it was decided by Bridgerton bosses to switch the order for the TV show, picking the fourth book Romancing Mr Bridgerton for season three instead.

The series will hinge around a masquerade ball in which Benedict meets a mysterious Lady in Silver.

It is not known if or how the show will change the book’s plot, with the TV show seeing Benedict explore bisexuality during season three, something that was not present in the source material.

Filming has also not yet commenced on season four, and it’s expected the series will not be released until at least 2026.
