Everything you need to know about One Day

One Day follows 20 years in the life of Dexter and Emma, two people who are inexplicably intertwined.

Picking up on July 15th of every year, the love story follows the duo as they endure the highs and lows of life, all while coming in and out of each other’s lives.

Starting at their meeting at the University of Edinburgh’s graduation ball in 1988, Dexter and Emma find themselves continually returning to each other.

But as the years go by, their relationships, careers, social lives and families continue to test their bond, with neither aware of what everyone else around them can clearly see.

Will they finally realise they’re in love? Or does life have other plans?

Based on the best-selling novel by David Nicholls, One Day premiered on Netflix in February 2024.

The show is 14 episodes in length, with each one tracking a different year of Emma and Dexter’s lives as July 15th once again rolls around.

Who stars in One Day?

The main cast of One Day consists of:

  • Leo Woodall (The White Lotus, Citadel) as Dexter

What is the age rating of One Day?

The official rating of One Day in the UK, as certified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), is 15 for the overall series.

This means it is not suitable for children, aiming at young adults and higher.

Reasons for this rating include the show containing:

  • Depictions of sex and sex acts (though notably with minimal nudity)
  • Use of drugs and alcohol abuse as a key story element
  • Depiction of a death and dead body
  • Some minor violence and violent acts

Will there be a season two of One Day?

At the time of writing (March 2026), there are currently no plans for season two of One Day.

Reasons behind this stem from it being based on a book, whose story has reached its conclusion by the show’s end.

The show was also developed as a limited series, and with the characters all reaching their natural end-point, it seems unlikely there will be a possible return.
