Yellowstone follows the story of the Dutton Family – a powerful dynasty and owner of the largest ranch in Montana.
Launching in 2018, the series tracks the family’s interpersonal issues as well as the drama at the ranch, which is bordered by Yellowstone National Park, the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, and a growing land run by developers.
With the property carrying a legacy spanning over 100 years, the series became an international success story, blending classic Western vibes with modern drama.
Yellowstone was created by Taylor Sheridan, who is also credited as showrunner, co-writer, and director.

How many episodes of Yellowstone are there?
Yellowstone is comprised of five seasons, totalling 57 episodes.
Each episode ranges from 45 minutes to an hour in length.
At the time of writing, the second half of season five is yet to air and will be the final season of the main series.
These episodes are due to air in November 2024.
How many Yellowstone spin-offs are there?
Yellowstone has been developed into a fully-fledged franchise, with several spin-offs focusing on different eras of the Dutton dynasty and key locations connected to the main show.
The other shows in the franchise are:
1883 (2021)
A prequel to 1923, 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story follows the birth of the Dutton dynasty. The series depicts the Dutton family’s move from Tennessee to Fort Worth, Texas, and their journey through Oregon to Montana, establishing what fans now know as the Yellowstone Ranch.
1923 (2022 – Present)
Hollywood legends Dame Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford lead this spin-off, also subtitled ‘A Yellowstone Origin Story’. It acts as a sequel to 1883, focusing on the Dutton family during the prohibition era and Great Depression. A second and final season has been confirmed but was delayed due to the 2023 writers and actors’ strikes. Release timing is yet to be announced.
The Madison (Yet to be released)
Featuring Michelle Pfeiffer as wealthy matriarch Stacy Clyburn, this spin-off follows the Clyburns' move to Montana after a family tragedy. Filming was believed to begin in August 2024, with a planned release in 2025.
6666 (Yet to be released)
The Four Sixes Ranch is a significant location in the main series. This spin-off is expected to follow the present-day happenings at the ranch. Announced in 2021, its development has faced delays, partly due to the pushback of the final Yellowstone season and the 2023 SAG/WGA strikes.
1944 (Yet to be released)
Announced in February 2023, 1944 is expected to touch on the US’s involvement in World War II, with D-Day occurring in June of that year. Further details on release or plot are not yet available.
What is the age rating of Yellowstone?
Yellowstone’s official rating in the UK, as certified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), is 15 for the overall series.
This means the show is not suitable for children or younger teens.
Reasons for this rating include:
- Nudity, including some cases of full-frontal female nudity
- Presence of blood and gore, including severe injury
- Scenes of intense peril, including car accidents
- Graphic depictions of murder and dead bodies
- Violence against animals
- Frequent use of profanity
- Depiction of suicide
- Scenes and storylines of alcohol abuse and drug use
