And Just Like That…: Everything you need to know about the fashion and the outfits Hero Image

Fashion has long been a key theme of the Sex and the City / And Just Like That… franchise. When SATC burst onto our screens in the late 90s, the characters became instant fashion icons – with show lead Carrie Bradshaw giving us some of the decade’s most iconic fashion moments.

AJLT S1 delivered all the fashion moments, with new characters allowing for fresh looks and modern brands. Thanks to pap photos of the cast filming on the streets of New York, one thing we know for sure is that the second season of AJLT will continue to give us some serious fashion inspiration and iconic style moments.

Who did the clothes for And Just Like That…?

Costume designer duo Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago are the brains behind all the outfits and fashion moments in And Just Like That… Having worked on Sex and the City with the series original stylist Patricia Field, the pair are more-than qualified in their role – as we’ve seen by the incredible moments AJLT S1 gave us.

In an interview with The Times, they revealed that one of the best things about working on the series is the excitement from fans. Santiago said: “The fanbase is amazing. They get so excited when they see certain familiar clothes and accessories on screen because they have such a connection to the show.”

Molly Rogers

Molly Rogers worked on Sex and the City from the very beginning, working across all six series of the show and it’s two spin-off films as part of stylist Patricia Field’s legendary team. Molly revealed to The Times that “Pat really defined the DNA of the original show, and we incorporate that into our process” – which is why, to the delight of fans, all the looks from AJLT S1 stayed true to each character’s style.

Danny Santiago

Like Molly, Danny worked as part of Patricia Field’s costume design team, joining during the filming of the first spin-off movie.

Q&A with costume designer Molly Rogers

With the return of And Just Like That… we nabbed some time with costume designer, Molly Rogers, for an exclusive Q&A to find out the answers to some of the most asked SATC/AJLT fashion questions.

How would you describe Carrie Bradshaw’s style?

Molly: Her style is a mix of high and low. It’s whimsical and modern and vintage and an amalgamation of pieces she loves.

What is the key to dressing like Carrie Bradshaw?

Molly: Buying what makes you happy. Life is short – support your local artist!

How has each character’s style changed since SATC?

Molly: Everyone has grown. Everyone is in a different place in life. Everyone evolving. Carrie is moving through her grief, Charlotte is raising teenagers, Miranda is searching for her identity. The WORLD is different…can you imagine when AI sets Carrie’s style?

Which designers does Carrie Bradshaw wear?

Molly: Carrie is very partial to Oscar de la Renta - loves a great Charles Jourdan shoe – Vivienne Westwood, Erdem, McQueen.

What were Carrie’s most expensive outfits from AJLT Series 1 and 2?

Molly: Most expensive borrowed: Season 1 Valentino couture gown on the Paris bridge. Most expensive borrowed in Season 2: Oscar de la Renta party dress or a Moncler x Valentino puffy coat.

Which character has been the most fun to dress?

Molly: You want to get us killed? But let’s take a moment to say Willie Garson.

Carrie’s Outfits

Love her or hate her, one thing you can’t deny is that Carrie Bradshaw has style. There’s a reason she was an icon of the 90s/00s and inspired a generation of fashion lovers. Always ahead of the curve and never one to conform to fashion trends, Carrie’s outfits reflect the energy and style of the city she lives in – New York.

Despite AJLT Carrie being in her fifties, Rogers and Santiago saw no reason for that to impact how she dresses. Speaking to The Times, Santiago said: “She is a free-spirited dresser who always had her own identity. She doesn’t really follow trends, she made them. There are certain things Carrie will always be drawn to, but she’ll wear them in a different way than she did 20 years ago.”

AJLT S1 gave us everything and more when it came to Carrie outfits and if the photos released by Sky are anything to go by, S2 will do the same.

What designers does Carrie Bradshaw wear?

Back in the Sex and the City days there were several designers and brands that became synonymous with Carrie Bradshaw and her signature style. From Manolo Blahnik heels (anyone remember Big proposing for the second time with a shoe instead of a ring?) to the Fendi Baguette bag, SATC played an instrumental role in popularising the accessories we know and love.

When the first series of And Just Like That… returned, fans were thrilled to discover that the fashion was back and better than ever. The introduction of new characters meant new looks and fresh inspiration, with Lisa Todd Wexley (played by Nicole Ari Parker) and Seema Patel (played by Sarita Choudhury) giving Carrie a run for her money when it came to avant-garde fashion moments. Costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago paired designer items from Carrie’s SATC wardrobe (Fendi, Manolo Blahnik, Chanel) with new, contemporary items including Birkenstock sandals and…a tote bag.

With the new season of AJLT debuting in a couple of days, all anyone has been talking about is the outfits. Thanks to paparazzi images of the cast filming in New York and official trailers released by Sky, we can confirm that some of Carrie’s most-loved designer brands will be worn during S2. Fendi, JW Anderson, Dior and Vivienne Westwood (yes, the wedding dress from the first movie is back!) are just a few of the designers that Carrie has been papped wearing. If there’s anything worth tuning in for, it’s the outfits!

Sustainability

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, AJLT costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago explained that in line with the fashion industry’s increasing focus on sustainability AJLT S2 will see Carrie re-wearing some of her most recognisable items from her SATC wardrobe.

Rogers said: “Carrie is one of those people who does like to go on adventure or mine for something she hasn’t worn in a while and rewear…We try to reuse the pieces from SJ’s archive in important moments where they meant something, because we wanted to honour them.”

Eagle-eyed viewers of AJLT S1 spotted Carrie wearing some familiar accessories, including her iconic blue satin Manolo Blahnik heels and her purple Fendi baguette bag that was stolen off her in SATC S3. Pap photos of the cast on set for AJLT S2 confirm Rogers statement about rewearing items, with Carrie being spotted wearing her iconic Vivienne Westwood wedding dress from the first film. Could another wedding be on the cards? Who knows.

Does Carrie Bradshaw wear jeans?

Jeans are often considered the most common wardrobe staple but not for Carrie Bradshaw. Carrie is not your run-of-the-mill dresser, her style is standout and for good or bad…unforgettable. Tutus to tiaras, Carrie makes the most unconventional outfit choices work.

But what you might be surprised to know is that Carrie does – on occasion – wear jeans. You’ll be forgiven for not remembering these outfits as, let’s be honest, jeans are rarely a memorable fashion choice. From skinny jeans to boyfriend jeans, Carrie wears the look well giving us lots of fashion inspo!
