And Just Like That... Carrie and Aidan are back together (again) Hero Image

Move over Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, there’s a new couple who are about to set the internet ablaze with their reunion. That’s right, season two of And Just Like That..., will see columnist-turned-podcaster, Carrie Bradshaw, trying to make things work once again with her old flame, Aidan Shaw, played by John Corbett.

News of Corbett reprising his role as the hopeless romantic broke back in the steamy days of summer 2022. Then the couple soft-launched on Instagram in January and February. The images of the couple, the first showing the reunited duo striding down a New York street, got people talking, but it was the image drop of the pair kissing that got tongues really wagging among fans of the show.

No doubt long-time viewers will have something to say about Bradshaw reuniting with Shaw. The newly rekindled love is set to form a central part of season two of And Just Like That... Ever since viewers met Aidan back in season three, fans fell into two camps, Team Big or Team Aidan. However, after Big and Carrie got married, the two camps seemed somewhat redundant (although that didn’t stop the debate in online forums). Then with the start of And Just Like That..., nothing was off the table.

What happened between Carrie and Aidan?

The story follows on from where we left Carrie back in season one, coming to terms with the sudden death of Mr. Big (Chris Noth), and Carrie dipping her toes (unsuccessfully) into the world of dating.

For those less familiar with the Sex and the City series and the subsequent films, Carrie and Aidan are the epitome of the well-worn proverb that the course of true love never did run smooth.

We first met Aidan in season three of Sex and the City, back in 2000, after Carrie broke up with Mr. Big. Carrie is shown a picture of Aidan by Stanford (the late Willie Garson), and things take off from there. However, whilst Carrie embraces her newfound love and plaid shirts, even stopping smoking her beloved cigarettes (Aidan said he could never date a smoker), she also rekindles her love with Mr. Big (who, yes, was still married at the time). Confessing mid-way through season three to the affair with Mr. Big, Aidan and Carrie part ways.

Aidan seemingly moves on from Carrie. Then came season four. This is the big Aidan/Carrie arc that makes him as important a part of Carrie’s life as Mr. Big.

Do Carrie and Aidan get married?

Accepting and moving on from the fact that Carrie cheated (kind of), the pair start dating again, after Aidan and Steve (David Eigenberg), Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) on-off boyfriend at the time, open a bar called ‘Scouts’. After moving in together, Aidan proposes to Carrie and, in an iconic scene where “maybe, you just have to accept what’s in your heart” – she says yes, partly because she loves him, but also because he chose the right ring (if you know, you know).

Just when you think that the fairy tale ending is in sight, things get messy. Aidan has given Carrie the cash for her apartment when the lease goes up. This leads to a lot of problems, and one of the more controversial times in Sex in the City. Feeling anxious and suffocated, Carrie decides that she’s not ready for marriage. Even with pleas of eloping to escape the pressures of planning the perfect wedding, Carrie grows concerned that Aidan just wants the marriage to cover up his insecurities about her potentially cheating again. Aidan doesn’t take it well. He leaves and gives her a letter asking to her to either move out of the apartment (which he owns) or give him the cash. This sends Carrie straight back to Big (not her finest hour), ultimately refusing Big’s money, and being saved by Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Carrie buys back the apartment, and things with Aidan are over.

Team Big or Team Aidan?

We have to wait all the way till season six before we see Aidan again, and it’s not happy news for Carrie. Whilst fleeing from a relationship gone sour, Carrie bumps into Aidan…and he’s now married… with three kids. Fans groan, although after the events of season four, Team Big have been in the lead for quite a while.

The last time fans heard of Aidan was in 2010, in Sex and the City 2. In what some might call a highly improbable meeting in Abu Dhabi, Aidan bumps into Carrie who is there with Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. Aidan suggests dinner, and whilst taking a trip down memory lane, the pair kiss. The problem? Well, Carrie and Mr. Big have been married since the events of the first Sex and the City movie. Big doesn’t take the news well, but by the end of the film they have reconciled their differences and Aidan is well out of the picture.

And that is the speedy run down of the much-troubled relationship of Carrie and Aidan.
