From Sam Smith to Carrie Fisher, we revisit the best Sex and the City and And Just Like That... celebrity cameos Hero Image

It’s not just John Corbett’s Aidan who’s set to return to the world of Sex and the City for season 2 of And Just Like That... - it’s been confirmed that Sam Smith will be making an appearance too. So in celebration of the Unholy singer, we feel it’s high time for a run-down of ten of the best celebrity cameos that graced the Sex and the City universe, whether it was in the hit nineties and noughties show, the films, or the much-loved spin-off, And Just Like That...

Any series worth its salt is cemented in TV history by the level of celebrity cameos it receives. Sure, Friends had Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, but no show can live up to the glamour and gloss of the cameos that graced the small screen for Sex and the City.

Bradley Cooper

Season 2, Episode 4

Long before he became an Oscar-nominated luminary, the Star Is Born actor, Bradley Cooper could be seen in 1999’s season 2 of Sex and the City, albeit in a fleeting role. A brief love interest of Carrie Bradshaw, Cooper had around a dozen lines of dialogue, but every producer in town will tell you it was a performance that showed the greatness to come. Ok, maybe not. But it’s nice to know that even megastars have humble beginnings. Cooper played the convertible-driving douchebag Jake, who is kicked to the curb by Carrie before the end of the episode (and who drives a convertible in NYC anyway?)

Carrie Fisher and Vince Vaughn

Season 3, Episode 14

Who would have thought that a princess might grace the series too? In series 3 that’s exactly what happened when princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher met Carrie Bradshaw, providing some genuine Hollywood royalty. In a rare episode outside of NYC, audiences were transported to Los Angeles, where Carrie’s judgement fails her and she ends up in bed with Keith Travers (played by another familiar face, Vince Vaughn), who claims to be a hot-shot agent, but it turns out to be Fisher’s assistant. It’s a great turn from the late Carrie Fisher, who always had wonderful comic timing.

Jon Bon Jovi

Season 2, Episode 13

Keeping things musical, season 2 saw Jon Bon Jovi make an appearance as one of Carrie’s brief love interests who she meets outside a therapist’s office (which back in the nineties was an acceptable place to pick up dates). Bon Jovi recently talked about his cameo revealing that, prior to making his appearance on the show, he had never seen an episode of Sex and the City. Given it was only two seasons in, the rock star can be forgiven.

Heidi Klum

Season 4, Episode 2

Perhaps, given the fashion credentials of Sex and the City, it should come as no surprise that a fair share of models and fashion icons have graced the show. Heidi Klum makes an appearance in one of the most memorable episodes. Backstage at a charity fashion show, Carrie chats with Klum, who comes across as sweetness and light. All is well with the world, until Carrie learns that she’s no longer going to be modelling a beautiful sequined D&G dress that she dreams of wearing, but instead is offered bejewelled panties, a blue coat, and a black bra. If things couldn’t get worse, as soon as she takes to the catwalk, Carrie goes flying, tripping over her stilettoes, with all the decorum of a dying swan. Meanwhile, with cut-throat professionalism, Klum steps over her likes she’s roadkill.

Lucy Liu

Season 4, Episode 11

Lucy Liu also made one of the most famous cameos in the series. Many at the time knew Liu for her role as Ling in another stellar show of the late noughties, Ally McBeal, and for her role in Charlie’s Angels. In the fourth season, Liu plays herself, hiring Samantha as her publicist. Things are all fine and dandy, until Samantha uses a name drop to get hold of a Birkin (remember, “It’s not a bag, it’s a Birkin”). Sadly, the name drop gets Samantha fired, and worse still, Liu takes the bag. FYI, if you want that bag today, in the same red that Samantha wanted, it will set you back £17k… if only she’d managed to hold on to it. Also, Sex and the City fans are calling for Liu to return, even if Kim Cattrall’s Samantha is unlikely to ever grace And Just Like That...

Donald Trump

Season 2, Episode 8

Over the years there have been many more cameos that can be listed here, including ones best forgotten (like a pre-president Donald Trump). The question now remains, who is going to show up alongside Sam Smith in season 2 of, And Just Like That...?

David Duchovny

Season 6, Episode 10

In perhaps what is one of the weirder moments in TV history, audiences had an unlikely double-whammy of cameos in season 6. Carrie decides to take a trip down memory lane and revisit her old high school boyfriend Jeremy, played David Duchovny. It turns out it wasn’t a wise idea, as he’s currently living in a psychiatric facility. Unfortunately, he ends up in Carrie’s ex-files.

Geri Halliwell

Season 6, Episode 10

Now, this is where things get weirder. In the same episode, Samantha is walking down the street on a very hot summer’s day in the city when who should she bump into? A bikini-clad Geri Halliwell of course! Fresh from a dip at Soho House and being ‘misted with Evian’, Halliwell offers up a plumb-y British accent that should have been given an Emmy. It’s one of the more bizarre moments in the history of Sex and the City, but also equally brilliant.
