Everything you need to know about the Blockbuster musical movie
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have taken millions down a yellow brick road and to the wonderful world of Oz in fantasy musical epic, Wicked.
An adaptation of the award-winning musical, which in turn is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, this story follows two best friends as they are forced down different paths in life.
Set before the famed classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is a prequel tale of the famed villain The Wicked Witch of the West, and her journey to becoming known by that name.
First announced in 2012, the film has been 12 years in the making, with production halts due to the 2020 Covid pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strikes of 2023.
In 2022, it was confirmed the story would be told in two parts, and filming commenced in July that year at Sky Studios in Elstree.
Part One was released in November 2024, becoming an international phenomenon in the process. Part two is due for release in November 2025.
Here’s everything you need to know about the films.
What is Wicked about?
Wicked follows the story of Elphaba, a young woman who would become famed as the Wicked Witch of The West in The Wizard of Oz.
Singled out from birth because of her distinctive green skin, and disowned by her family, Elphaba lands a place at Shiv University, determined to turn her life around alongside her sister, Nessarose, who is paraplegic and uses a wheelchair.
Once there, she forms an unlikely friendship with Galinda, the highly popular, pink-loving girl of her class, when they are roomed together.
Initially starting out at odds with each other, with Galinda jealous of the attention Elphaba gets for her abilities as a sorcerer, the duo ultimately become close, with one learning from the other.
However, external factors – including love interest Fiyero, discrimination in the school and ultimately a run-in with the all-powerful Wizard of Oz sends the duo on different paths in life, turning their once solid friendship into a tale of tragic rivalry.
What is Wicked Part Two called and what will happen in it?
Part two of the Wicked films has been renamed Wicked: For Good, and will pick up several years after the events of what happened at Shiz University.
The story will pick up with Galinda (now Glinda) and Elphaba on their separate journeys, as they head towards the events that occur in The Wizard Of Oz.
Now an outcast to the world, Elphaba is in hiding – but has some friends to help her when things begin to spiral out of control.
On the other side, Glinda The Good has become famed in Oz for her popularity and niceness, but is still torn about what happened to her once best friend.
It’s been confirmed Part Two will be released on November 25, 2025.
