Gomorrah

A TV series Ricky Gervais called “the best show in the world” upon its release, Gomorrah is an Italian crime drama series following two crime organisations at war.
Based on the book by Roberto Saviano, Gomorrah follows Ciro Di Marzio, a member of the Savastano family, who are part of the criminal Camorra organisation.
As he navigates the Naples criminal underworld, Ciro soon finds himself entangled in the tricky web of the civil war within the factions.
Gomorrah ran for five seasons, ending in 2021, and ranks at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
My Brilliant Friend

Another Italian adaptation, this time of a novel penned by Elena Ferrante, My Brilliant Friend follows the near lifelong friendship of Elena (Lenú) and Lila in post-War Naples.
Adoring her as much as she falls out with her, Elena starts writing down her long and complicated history with her friend after finding out Lila has gone missing.
Exploring female friendship, social standing and forging your own identity, My Brilliant Friend sees the highs and lows of the pair throughout the decades that follow in this coming-of-age and beyond tale, starting in the 1950s.
The show ran for four seasons – one for each book in Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels – and came to its conclusion in November 2024.
Babylon Berlin

A Sky Original, Babylon Berlin has landed the rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes after becoming one of the most ambitious German dramas to reach British screens.
This German neo-noir story follows the tale of Gereon Rath, a German Inspector in Berlin during the later years of the Weimar Republic.
Starting the story in 1929, Rath arrives on assignment from Cologne with an intent to expose an extortion ring. Clerk Charlotte Ritter soon works alongside him, with dreams of becoming Berlin’s first female detective, but working as a sex worker to make ends meet.
Soon Rath – who hides his PTSD from his time in World War I and guilt of his brother’s death with drug dependency – finds himself falling further into the criminal underworld of the city.
The Swarm

Another German show, this sci-fi thriller follows a group of scientists as they discover a mysterious underwater threat that could destroy the world.
As sea creatures make coordinated attacks on humans around the globe, the team are on a race against the clock to figure out the cause before the force threatens to wipe out humanity as they know it.
Adapted from the novel by Frank Schätzing, the limited series ran for eight episodes and explores what could happen if nature fights back against human environmental destruction.
Das Boot
Available now on Sky Atlantic and NOW
In this Sky Original, Das Boot is inspired by Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s novel and the 1981 smash-hit film.
Spanning over four series and set during World War II, Das Boot follows the inexperienced crew members of U-612 as they try to survive secret missions during the war.
Expanding on the horrors unfolding on the boat, the TV series also follows those in mainland, with occupied France providing a home for spies and moral grey lines as those within the resistance, the Gestapo and politicians try to navigate the war towards its conclusion, with the expanse of the brutality of the war being put on full display.
With the story starting in 1942, Das Boot ran for four seasons totalling 32 episodes and tracks the time period including the Allied invasion of Italy, and torn loyalties between dedication to the country while opposing Hitler’s regime.
Gangs of Milan: Blocco 181
Available now on Sky Atlantic and NOW
Block 181 is a drug-ridden neighbourhood in Milan, ruled by boss Nicola Rizzo – with the boys who live there her ‘pandilleros’ (gang members). But when a rival gang, La Misa, starts making themselves known, a fight for power soon ensues.
Amid the chaos, young Bea finds herself torn between wanting to get out of this life to the loyalty she has for her brother, a member of La Misa.
Soon she’s in a star-crossed love triangle involving cocaine carrier Ludo and Nicola Rizzo’s nephew, Mahdi.
Another Sky Original, Gangs of Milan: Blocco 181 launched in 2022, with a second season premiering in March 2025.

ZeroZeroZero

Hollywood heavyweights Gabriel Byrne, Andrea Riseborough and Dane DeHaan star in this multilingual tale of a family who find themselves in too deep.
The trio play the Lynwood family – an American clan who control an international shipping company, brokering cocaine for organised crime gangs in Mexico and Italy.
However, things go awry after being tasked with delivering a massive cocaine shipment from Enrique and Jacinto Leyra in Monterrey, Mexico, all the way to 'Ndrangheta mob boss Don Minu La Piana in Gioia Tauro, Italy.
With civil wars breaking out within the 'Ndrangheta, the Lynwoods soon find themselves having to reroute via Morocco, with everyone’s operation coming under threat as a result.
ZeroZeroZero was created by the team behind Gomorrah and ranks with a strong 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The limited series was released in 2020 and ran for eight episodes.
The King

In this Italian series, Luca Zingaretti stars as Bruno Testori, a prison warden who considers San Michele Penitentiary with an iron fist and his own unique set of laws – doling out his own form of justice however he sees fit.
Within those walls, he’s King. However, his personal life is far from easy.
But when there’s a double murder, his once “peaceful” life comes under threat, and soon he’s fighting for his Kingdom.
The series has currently run for two seasons.
Accidentally Famous: The Story of 883

Inspired by the story of Italian pop group 883, Accidentally Famous follows teenage musicians Max Pezzali and Mauro Repetto, who after a chance meeting form a lifelong friendship that revolves around music in the 80s.
As the duo pursue their dreams, they hope to break out of the small town of Pavia and see the world with their music.
However, once they do, they are quick to discover the immense pressures of fame and the music industry and need each other more than ever.
Der Pass

Inspired by the Scandinavian hit series The Bridge, Der Pass follows two detectives – one German and one Austrian – as they try and solve a murder where the body was left right on the borderline between Traunstein and Salzburg.
Ellie and Gedeon, the two detectives, need to work together in order to solve the crime, with the serial killer using a Krampus mask as a disguise in his ritualistic-like murders – but as cunning as he is evil, it’s not that simple.
The series ran for three seasons, each with the pair focusing on a new case, and ended in 2023.
Monstrous

In this South Korean limited series, former archaeologist Jung Ki-hoon has given up his work in favour of working on magazine and YouTube channel, Monthly Strange Story.
He is drawn back into his old profession when a giant Buddha statue known as Gwibul is unearthed in the quiet Jinyang County. For the local town, they consider it something to celebrate, with the statue undoubtedly becoming a tourist attraction.
But with the statue comes a historical curse which, when unleashed, claims people’s souls.
Working alongside ex-wife Lee Soo-jin, a professional cypher-decoder, the pair need to figure out how to break the curse quickly and get answers to the bizarre goings on in the town of Jinyang County before it’s too late.
