Trust Me: The False Prophet

● Trust Me: The False Prophet is a true crime documentary following a couple who infiltrate the controversial Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) in Utah.

● At the time, the church had taken on a new leader, Samuel Bateman, who declared himself the God-appointed successor of former leader and convicted criminal Warren Jeffs.

● Through infiltrating the group, the pair were able to capture evidence of Bateman’s own criminal behaviour.

● The series acts in part as a follow-up to 2022’s Keep Sweet: Prey and Obey, which documented the church under the rule of Jeffs and his arrest.

In this hard-hitting documentary spanning several years, Trust Me: The False Prophet follows Dr Christine Marie and Tolga Katas, a married couple who document what happens when they successfully infiltrate and gain the trust of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) in Utah.

The controversial strand of Mormonism came under scrutiny when its president, Warren Jeffs, was arrested and charged for the rape of minors within his community. He is currently serving life plus 20 years in prison.

Moving to Short Creek, Utah, in 2017, the pair initially wanted to track the group as they navigated life without Jeffs ruling over them, hoping to help those involved within the community.

But then Samuel Bateman, a member of the Church, claimed that he was appointed the new prophet of the group – and the group, blinded by their devotion and faith, accepted him.

But as his demands grew, so did his number of wives. Some of which, the pair learned, were as young as nine years old.

Working alongside the police department and the FBI, Dr Christine and Tolga seek to get the evidence they need to blow Bateman’s operation wide open by pretending to film a promotional documentary. Over the course of years, they finally get enough to bring him down and help those who have been living under his rule.

Trust Me: The False Prophet was released in April 2026 and received a 100% score on RottenTomatoes on its release.

Leading the documentary are Dr. Christine Marie and her husband, Tolga Katas.

Dr Christine Marie is a cult specialist with a PhD in Media Psychology and is certified Trauma and Resiliency Life Coach. She is the founder of Voices for Dignity, a non-profit organisation that helps survivors of trafficking, coercive control, humiliation, public shaming, and oppression. She was previously a parent educator and is also a published author.

Tolga Katas is a fashion photographer, filmmaker and music producer. He has been married to Dr Christine Marie since 2011, though they have been together since 1999. The pair moved to Short Creek, Utah, in 2017 to start documenting the FLDS Church.

The series also features a number of prominent members and former FLDS members, most notably Samuel Bateman, who claimed God had appointed him the church’s new leader following the incarceration of Warren Jeffs.

Bateman is currently serving 50 years in prison for conspiracy to commit transportation of a minor for criminal sexual activity, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Trust Me: The False Prophet runs for a total of four episodes ranging from 45 minutes to an hour in length.

The series tracks the group as Dr Christine Marie and Tolga Katas get to know the community, before Samuel Bateman takes over, increases his demands on the community, and is eventually arrested.

There are currently no plans for a second season.

The official rating of Trust Me: The False Prophet in the UK, as noted by Netflix, is 15 for the overall series, meaning it’s been considered unsuitable for younger audiences.

As a documentary, the series covers real-life events, including:

● Details of sexual abuse, including towards children

● Depictions of an intense religious environment and rules

● Coercive control and manipulation

● Religious manipulation

● Some instances of swearing

Trust Me: The False Prophet is a Netflix series available via Sky.
