
True Detective: Season 1 Guide

True Detective became an instant classic on its launch in 2014 – becoming a must-watch around the world as two trouble detectives recounted their stories.
With an all-star cast led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the gritty drama was told over multiple timelines, starting in 1995 with the horrific murder of sex worker Dora Lange in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
With detectives Rustin "Rust" Cohle and Martin "Marty" Hart on the case, the pair need to keep their head in the game as their personal lives begin to unravel.
The series was well-received. It was nominated for 29 awards that awards season, taking home 12 including a Bafta for best international programme, five Emmys and a Critics Choice award.

Season 1 Episodes Recap
Season one of True Detective runs for eight episodes, and is split between two timelines: 1995, and 2012.
Here’s how the episodes break down.
Episode 1: The Long Bright Dark
On January 3rd, 1995, Detectives Hart and Cohle are sent to investigate the murder of Dora Lange – whose body was bizarrely staged. As they begin interviews, a missing persons case from five years ago begins to appear to be connected.
Meanwhile, in 2012, the pair – having not spoken in over 10 years – are separately interviewed by Detectives Papania and Gilbough as a new murder digs up their old case, suggesting they may not have caught the killer.

Episode 2: Seeing Things
In 1995, tensions between the detectives flare as personal lives begin to disrupt their investigation. Meanwhile, local reverend Billy Lee Tuttle fights for the launch of a new police task force for Anti-Christian crimes – with Lange’s murder being the top priority. As their investigation leads to a brothel occupied by runaways, a crack in the case leads to a new theory about Dora’s death.
In 2012, Rust reflects on a personal tragedy, and his life in the years that followed.

Episode 3: The Locked Room
Marty and Rust fall further into the religious connections to Nora’s death, discussing her life with a pastor who knew her before finding bizarre symbols that tie her murder to that of others.
But pressure to turn the case over to Tuttle’s task force continues to mount – even when his own academy begins to seem connected.

Episode 4: Who Goes There?
Marty and Rust interview Charlie Lange and his potential involvement – leading down a path tracking the involvement of a drug dealer named Dewall Ledoux, and an east Texas biker gang known as the Iron Crusaders.
As Marty finds himself dealing with a personal situation back at home, Rust takes matters into his own hands, leading them down a potentially deadly path.
In 2012, both men continue to be grilled – and both decide to hide key facts from the detectives.

Episode 5: The Secret Fate of All Life
Rust and Marty follow leads to a meth lab, with its owner making bizarre statements that could be connected to Dora’s death – but an even more sinister discovery leads to a reckless decision, and the pair are forced to think on their feet.
In 2002, Rust is offered information about Dora Lange’s murder amid claims the killer is still at large. A return to the crime scene for the first time in years comes with a terrifying discovery.
The interviews in 2012 take a turn when Detectives Papania and Gilbough propose a new theory that tests Marty’s resolve.

Episode 6: Haunted Houses
Now in 2002, Rust finds connections between a string of missing people and schools funded by Tuttle – leading to suspicions of a morbid cover-up. The investigation leads Rust to confront the pastor.
Marty reconnects with a woman connected to Dora Lange’s past, leading to a series of events that breaks down their working relationship and budding friendship.

Episode 7: After You’ve Gone
In 2012, Rust tries to vindicate himself of a crime he’s been accused of by reuniting with Marty, presenting evidence that Dora – and several other missing women – could be connected to a cult.
With the pair now back together, their new sense of verve uncovers chilling evidence that someone with ties to the investigation could be the orchestrator.
