Everything you need to know about the supernatural fantasy/horror series

Grimm is a supernatural fantasy/horror series that brings the tales of The Brothers’ Grimm into a 21st century world.
The story follows esteemed Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt, whose world is turned upside down when he starts getting strange visions of citizens turning into monsters.
Soon, he discovers he has inherited a special family ability – he can see supernatural creatures, most of which featured in the fairy tales he read as a child.
All those who have the ability are known as being a ‘Grimm’.
With access to this special power, he comes with a whole new job of keeping the fragile balance between the human and supernatural world.
Helping Nick on his mission is a self-professed reformed ‘big bad wolf’, his detective partner, and his girlfriend.
Grimm premiered on 28 October 2011 - in line with NBC’s Halloween schedule - and ran through to March 2017, during which time it drew in an average of six million viewers per episode and established a devoted, cult audience.
Who was in the cast of Grimm?
As Grimm was in essence a procedural drama, each episode mostly involved a core cast, and a revolving door of one-off appearances.
The core cast throughout the show was:
- David Giuntoli (A Million Little Things, 13 Hours) as detective-turned-supernatural hunter, Nick Burkhardt.
- Russell Hornsby (The Hate U Give, Fences) as Hank Griffin, Nick’s partner in the Homicide division.
- Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break, Paradise Lost) as supernatural insider, Monroe
- Sasha Roiz (The Day After Tomorrow, Chicago Med) as Captain Sean
Renard - Reggie Lee (The Lincoln Lawyer, All Rise) as Sergeant Drew Wu
- Elizabeth Tullock (Superman and Lois, The Artist) as Juliette Silverton, Nick’s on/off girlfriend.
- Bree Turner (The Ugly Truth, Just My Luck) as Rosalee Calvert
- Claire Coffee (Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, General Hospital) as Adelind Schade.
How successful was Grimm and which awards did it win?
Throughout the show’s entire run, Grimm managed to maintain an impressively large and devout audience for network NBC.
At its height during season three, Grimm peaked just short of eight million viewers per episode on average. By the time the show ended in season six, it still pulled in an average of just over six million.
However, the ratings success didn’t necessarily pass over into awards recognition every year. Over the course of the show’s run, it was nominated for only two Primetime Emmys, both for stunt coordination, and yet won neither.
Grimm garnered 17 nominations overall across all awards bodies - including People’s Choice Awards two years in a row for best Favourite Network Drama, and Best Genre TV series three years in a row at the Satellite awards.
The series now sits at 89 per cent critics rating and a 90 per cent audience score on aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, and maintains a strong 7.9/10 IMBb rating.
What is the age rating of Grimm?
Grimm’s official rating in the UK, as certified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), is 15 for the complete run. In the US, it is marked as PG-13 or TV-14.
All three ratings warn there may be scenes that may be inappropriate for younger or pre-teen audiences, despite the basis of the show being fairy tales.
There is no nudity on Grimm, and sex is always implied rather than being shown, and swearing is kept to mild, infrequent use.
However, in the case of Grimm, depictions of violence, and use of bloodshed and gore is the biggest reason for the rating increase.
Most episodes are based around at least one murder or attack, with the show leaning into horror and the supernatural.
These are at times depicted graphically, other times implied, and includes but is not limited to beheadings, mutilation, gun violence and fist-fighting.
How many episodes of Grimm are there?
Grimm ran for six seasons, totalling 123 episodes.
Seasons one to five ran for 22 episodes a piece.
However, the sixth and final season was massively stripped back, and only given a half-run time of 13 episodes.
Will Grimm ever return for season 6 or a reboot?
Currently, there are no plans for a revival of Grimm, or a reboot.
During the show’s run, the Grimm team released three mini-series online - ‘Bad Hair Day’, ‘Love Is In The Air’, and ‘Meltdown’ - consisting of four seven-minute ‘webisodes’ apiece.
In October 2018, over a year after the finale, Variety reported that a spin-off was in the works by Melissa Glenn, who’s since been behind episodes of Iron Fist season two, and the Beauty And The Beast TV series.
The initial report claimed the show would fold in new characters to ‘build off the mythology’ already set by the show, with fan favourites making returns.
However, the show was never named, and plans appear to have since been abandoned.
