This long-running American medical drama follows the tangled lives of interns, residents and their mentors at a fictional Seattle hospital. Watch on Disney+ via Sky.

What is Grey’s Anatomy about?

Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama centred around a fictional hospital in Seattle, and the lives and loves of the staff and patients who work there.

Central to this story is Meredith Grey, a brilliant doctor who begins the series desperate to step out of the shadow of her award-winning surgeon mother, Ellis Grey.

Joining Seattle Grace hospital as an intern, Meredith quickly finds herself in romantic entanglements and professional tete-a-tetes as she makes her way in the medical world.

But through quick wits, genius intellect and a tight knit group of loved ones, she sets about to make her mark on the world – no matter how chaotic the situation may be.

While there are continuing storylines of the staff throughout the series, Grey’s also has an ‘episodic’ storytelling element, with each new episode bringing new patients and medical marvels for our doctors to diagnose, treat or operate on.

Created by Shonda Rhimes and launching in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has become a long-standing fan favourite drama in both the US and the UK. It is the longest-standing scripted primetime show in American TV history.

At the time of writing (February 2026), the series is now in its 22nd season.

How many episodes of Grey’s Anatomy are there?

There are currently 22 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, which by the end of the current season run will total 458 episodes.

Each episode is around 45minutes in length.

Season lengths have varied over the years, depending on the potential lifespan of the show, or notable events that shortened the available production time.

Season one is the shortest season, having just nine episodes for a debut test run, but it proved such a hit it was renewed for an extended 27-episode season two.

In 2007, season four only ran for 17 episodes, with the show shutting down due to that year’s Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.

Seasons 3 to 16 have, on average, 24 episodes each, with 2020’s Season 17 cut down to only 17 episodes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Season 20 only ran for 10, in large part due to the dual WGA and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strikes, and Seasons 21 and 22 have been given 18 episodes each.

So there’s plenty to be watching!

How successful is Grey’s Anatomy and what awards has it won?

Grey’s Anatomy has become a national staple in the US, with a devoted following in the UK as well.

It currently holds the title of longest-running scripted show on US TV network, ABC, and has held a Thursday night primetime show.

Despite its extreme length, it maintains a strong 84% rating on review aggregate site, RottenTomatoes at the time of writing (February 2026) .

The show and its cast and crew have been nominated for 253 awards to date, winning four Primetime Emmys, 3 Actor Awards (formerly known as SAG Awards) and two Golden Globes.

Does Grey’s Anatomy have any spin-offs or reboots?

Grey’s Anatomy has multiple spin-offs – two TV series, and one web-series.

Across the Grey’s universe, characters and storylines would back and forth over the shows, with crossover episodes and special appearances being common at least once per season.

Private Practice (2007 to 2013)

Following a ‘backdoor pilot’ episode that ran in the main series of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice launched in 2007, and followed Kate Walsh’s character Addison Montgomery as she joined a private OB/GYN clinic in Los Angeles, wanting a fresh start away from Seattle.

The show ran for six seasons, and 111 episodes before ending shortly after Walsh announced her plans to leave the show.

Station 19 (2018 to 2024)

Station 19 is a procedural drama of a fire department in Seattle, and was connected by character Ben Warren (Jason George), who left his job as a doctor in order to become a fireman.

Due to the location of the station, and Ben being married to main character Miranda Bailey, far more crossovers occurred - with the two shows often dealing with the same accidents and emergencies, but from the perspective of the relevant teams.

The show had 12 crossover specials with Grey’s, not including the pilot episode or the special cameo appearances.

Launching in May 2018, Station 19 ran for seven seasons, totalling 105 episodes, before ending in 2024.

Grey’s Anatomy B-Team (2018)

The six-mini webisodes were uploaded to the ABC app and ABC.com in January 2018, and followed the current new batch of interns as they made their start at Grey Sloan Memorial.

Leading cast members including Justin Chambers, Kevin McKiss and James Pickens Jr would drop in for appearances with the new cast members, but each one only lasted approximately three to four minutes each.

What is the age rating of Grey’s Anatomy?

Grey’s Anatomy’s official rating in the UK is 15 for the complete run, meaning it has been deemed unsuitable for younger audiences.

This is due to:

  • Frequent use of heavily-implied sexual activity and sexual references, though next to no nudity unless in a setting relevant to the medical profession.

  • Some profanity and swearing, though kept to a minimum and largely mild in tone.

  • Present and consistent graphic bloodshed, gore, depictions of perilous scenarios, death and dead bodies due to the nature of the show being around medical emergencies and surgeries.

  • Scenes of violence including fist-fighting, use of guns, weaponry and armour.

  • Some storylines viewers may find distressing – with themes of suicide, domestic abuse, self-harm and, in one notable case, a graphic and extended active shooter storyline that plays out across season six’s final two episodes.
