What happens in Euphoria Season 3, Episode 3 ‘The Ballad of Paladin’?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

In her apartment, Jules gets to work on a new art piece. In a flashback, we discover how she got into her work as a sugar baby, with her then-roommate Vivian convincing her to give it a try.

Jules is hesitant, but “anything’s better than working retail”. After her first date with a terrified 48-year-old named Rick results in her earning some serious cash just for letting him lick her tights, she’s sold – and soon she has a rotation of sugar daddies across the city, all happily handing over their cash to her.

Then she meets Ellis, a charming, married plastic surgeon with a God complex. He believes his work defies the natural order of things, and after her transition at 14, he considers Jules like a piece of art and “near-perfect”. His wife knows he has “certain weaknesses” but has learned to tolerate them.

By the end of the night, she is second guessing whether she even needs to be in art school anymore, making more money than she could have dreamed of. Soon Ellis is her only client. She indulges his kinks, including being wrapped up in cellophane like a statue as she poses for him, with him telling her he “may just keep her forever”.

Going Legit

At the Silver Slipper, Rue has been promoted to arms dealer, selling semi-automatic guns to gangsters for Alamo in a back room. She notes that while “a lot of Americans have feelings about guns”, most of the weapons are being taken back over the border to Mexico.

Alamo is pleased with her work, but when she mentions she hopes to save up enough money to “go legit”, he doesn’t look happy, questioning why she doesn’t feel like his business is legitimate enough.

She tells him she just meant legal, but he tells her power is the true legitimacy in this world – and making money is the real way to do this. So she needs to stop complaining and keep her mouth shut.

Their conversation is interrupted when a giant pig is let loose in the club, knocking over tables, scaring customers and peeing everywhere. Alamo shoots it dead, knowing this is tit-for-tat revenge from Laurie’s gang.

Still feeling aggrieved by her, he decides they need to pay her – and her beloved pet parrot Paladin – a visit.

The next day, Rue heads over to see Jules, and invites her to be her +1 to Jules and Cassie’s wedding. Throwing her some cash, she tells her to “dress sexy”.

The Big Day

It’s finally time for Cassie and Nate to tie the knot – surrounded by family, friends and $50,000 worth of flowers.

Maddy is the first to arrive, – dressed to kill and not knowing whether she’d rather make a scene or continue her plan of manipulating Cassie – with Jules and Rue not far behind. While Nate’s mother comments she’s surprised Maddy would show her face, she does not remember Jules at all – but his dad Cal certainly does.

Nate vomits and hyperventilates in the bathroom before being encouraged by his brother to finally get down the aisle. Lexi is Cassie’s maid of honour, with her mother giving her away. As they walk down the aisle, her mother rabbits on to Cassie the whole way down with less than positive vibes, noting bitterly how her wedding day was “the last happy moment she shared” with Cassie’s father.

Cassie, whose face is filled with panic, tries to ignore her as her mother continues to talk, saying how naive and young she was marrying a man who turned out to be nothing like she expected. As they part ways, her mother says Cassie is “her masterpiece” and wishes her luck.

Apart from that, the ceremony goes off without a hitch, with the newlyweds passionately kissing in front of the entire congregation before heading back up the aisle together.

Laurie receives a call from Alamo, who informs her Rue is being sent over for a pick-up. Faye overhears the boys discussing whether they should just kidnap Rue when she comes over, but Laurie is suspicious why they would send her.

Rue gets a call from Bishop, who pulls her away for the job – not giving her a choice about it – leaving Jules with Lexi and Maddy, who take her under their wing.

At the elaborate reception, complete with an ice sculpture of the happy couple, the girls prop up the bar, while Cal demands drinks be brought to his table. He later gives a short speech that lands well, calling him Nate a winner, celebrating his beautiful bride, and promising to keep drinking.

Old Faces

At the bar, Cal and Jules run into each other, and he apologises for recording them having sex – but notes he only did it for his own gratification and to “relive the experience” of being with her.

He was put on the sex offender registry for sleeping with another guy who lied about his age when they had sex, with whom he made another video. But Cal notes Jules’s video somehow never made it to the police, and she shoots a look over to Nate, realising he must have destroyed it for her, keeping her out of the trouble.

Despite their awkward history, the pair end on good terms.

Nate’s mother is next up for speeches, and she can’t help but take a swipe at Nate’s ex, Maddy, for being “not right” for him. Maddy notices the jab and shares a sad look with Cassie from across the room.

Their night is disrupted by the arrival of one of Nate’s “business associates”, Naz, who notices the flower arrangement and tells him how foolish it is for him to throw such a lavish party when he owes so many people a lot of money. Nate cannot stop everyone at the bride and groom’s table from hearing his threats, and Cassie realises how deep Nate is... and she’s not the only one. One of Cassie’s bridesmaids is the wife of another of Nate’s investors – the same one that outed Cassie’s OnlyFans account at the party. Outraged by what she’s heard, she storms off to tell her husband.

Nate tries to calm down the situation, but Naz promises to become his “worst f**king nightmare” and demands his repayment. He leaves, but Cassie is clearly shaken. Close to tears, Lexi asks if she’s OK, but she dismisses her sister, saying it’s a “weird question to ask on the best day of her life”.

As the pair take to the floor for their first dance, Cassie begins to panic and asks questions to Nate – while performing an elaborately corny routine with her now-husband through tears and a fake smile. He tells her that they may need to downsize for a while, but she refuses – telling him she does not want to be poor. Maddy watches on, and experiencing more feelings that she expected to, takes her leave.

As the party continues, news spreads around Nate being broke. He’s confronted by the bridesmaid’s husband about the money they’ve put in, and Nate tells him that his construction has been put on hold because they found a rare and protected flower called a white fritillary on site so they can’t build. He manages to talk him around by coining the catchphrase “f**k the flower.”

Nate nips out for a cigarette and briefly reunites with Jules. He asks where Maddy is, and thanks her for coming.

The investor’s wife confronts Cassie, who is now necking back champagne. She angrily accuses Nate of conning all his friends and neighbours while pimping her out on OnlyFans. Cassie denies this, insisting the OnlyFans content was her idea, and dismisses the notion that her husband is broke. When the woman tells her they invested their kids’ college funds into the business, Cassie coldly replies that she doesn’t see it as her problem.

She later confronts Nate in front of his groomsmen about what’s going on, accidentally letting off a champagne cork in his eye.

The Ballad of Paladin

On route to Laurie’s house, Rue gets a call from Fez in prison. She tells him she misses him, and he shares his plans to break out using parkour. She wishes him luck and tells him to look her up if he ever makes it out.

She meets up with Bishop, who follows her in his own car to Laurie’s house. She asks if he’s going to do anything crazy, and he says to “define crazy”. As they arrive, they’re accosted outside and Bishop hands over his gun before coming in.

They have a message from Alamo, saying he’s considering buying from someone new, but prefers her prices. They’re willing to continue their business partnership, but from now on want to test the product before buying to prevent the same problem as before.

Bishop notices the parrot, Paladin, in the corner, and shares that he loves animals. Laurie notes she’s sad that Rue is happier with Alamo – warning “the grass is always greener by the septic tank”.

Back at the wedding, Nate and Cassie leave the party in a limo, with Lexi and her mum watching from the sidelines. While they put on a happy face, the pair are miserable. Nate promises to get them out of the mess. He assures her he loves her and together they can fix anything and everything. He wants to be a better man and husband for her – and maybe even one day, a father.

The pair soften around each other and with the promise of tomorrow being a new day, finally settle into a happily married feeling. They share a kiss.

Meanwhile, Maddy heads home alone to her unglamorous dwellings – a far cry from the extravagance of the wedding

Back at Laurie’s house, she gets sketchy when she notices Bishop behaving weirdly around the bird, but instead he talks to her about the parrot’s name, and their shared love for westerns, before taking a feather from the parrot and putting it in his hair. What she doesn’t know is that he’s slipped a pill into the bird’s water.

After throwing a pile of cash on the table, Bishop and Rue leave without further incident.

Causing a Scene

As Nate carries Cassie over the threshold of their home as man and wife, they are interrupted by Naz, who has been waiting for them with two of his men. They attack Nate, and in the commotion Cassie is knocked down, hitting her face on their marble floor.

As Nate is beaten to a pulp, Cassie realises she’s bleeding and cries hysterically – apparently oblivious to Nate’s peril - and protests that it’s her wedding night. Naz says that Nate “didn’t want to listen to reason” and encourages her not to cry as it's ruining her make up.

Nate is dragged to the floor, and begs for just a couple more days, but it’s too late – tearing off his shoe, they cut off his little toe.

As they leave, Naz warns her that some women marry into money – while others end up in debt. Cassie is left staring at her bleeding and screaming husband.

Elsewhere, Rue is pulled over by the DEA – who know her by name and demand she get out of her car.

At Laurie’s house, Paladin, who has drunk the spiked water, falls off his perch and dies.
