Major awards from this season include Zendaya winning Best Actress in a Drama at the Critics Choice Awards, Primetime Emmys, and Golden Globes for her portrayal of Rue.

Here’s what went down.

Episode 1: Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door

Starting with a flashback to Fezco’s life as a child, we discover what turned this kind-hearted soul into the drug dealer we know him as. In the present day, his ‘adopted’ 12-year-old brother Ashtray makes a rash decision with devastating consequences. A few weeks later, Fez and Ash meet up with Rue, who is now officially off the wagon.

At a school party, Nate and Cassie make a dangerous decision that could have massive implications for her and best friend Maddy.

Rue, on a self-destruct mission, has a potentially lethal encounter with newcomer Elliot. She later reunites with Jules and they break down what happened in the season one finale.

Fez finds an unlikely kindred spirit in the shape of Lexi, before he gets into a violent confrontation with Nate.

Episode 2: Out of Touch

As Nate recovers from his run-in with Fez, his father Cal goes on the warpath – ultimately resulting in a long-needed confrontation where secrets are finally brought to the surface.

Cassie, who is on a personal mental health spiral following her decision to have an abortion, continues her own destructive path with her potential new boyfriend.

As Rue continues to get close to Elliot, Jules begins to have insecurities about the new person in Rue’s life. Kat begins to second-guess her romance with Ethan.

Episode 3: Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys

This episode flashback centres on Cal and how he came to question his sexuality. Seeing him in high school, he starts dating Marsha while harbouring feelings for his best friend, Derek. But a life-changing revelation sets him down a path we now know him on.

Later on, Cal resorts to desperate measures to keep his secret hidden, leading to an unlikely truce being formed between him and Fezco.

In the present day, Rue continues to hide the depth of her spiralling addiction from those around her, with a friendship with dealer Laurie encouraging a new business opportunity. But her behaviour doesn’t go unnoticed by her sponsor, Ali, who has to put up boundaries for his own sobriety.

Cassie continues to cut herself off from those around her as she binds herself further to Nate – who has already gotten bored and still isn’t quite over Maddy.

Lexi begins to focus her frustrations into her new school play.

Episode 4: You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can

Jules, Elliot and Rue’s friendship heads down an even darker path – leading to a robbery, a confrontation, a hallucination and a hook-up.

Cassie and Nate’s toxic relationship continues down a complicated path as he admits his reconnection with Maddy. As Maddy’s birthday party gets underway, things are destined to end in yet another argument.

Spiralling Cal makes a drunken and hasty decision regarding his future and his family as he continues to grapple with who he really is.

Episode 5: Stand Still Like the Hummingbird

In what is highly praised as the best episode of the series, Stand Still Like A Hummingbird focuses solely on Rue as her addiction struggles begin to take over every aspect of her life.

As her family and friends stage an intervention, Rue resorts to a violent meltdown as she ignores her loved ones' pleas to get the help she desperately needs, while her mother takes matters into her own hands to get her away from drugs.

Rather than head to rehab, Rue goes on the run, stopping by numerous houses and leaving destruction in her wake as she does so. Starting at Lexi’s house, where she also sees Cassie and Maddy, she heads to Fez’s house and pushes her luck too far, prompting her to a new level of criminality as she begins to withdraw from the drugs she’s on.

Her final stop at Laurie’s finally seems like a safe place, but a new implication in their relationship leads her to make a decision about the path her life is going down.

Episode 6: A Thousand Little Trees of Blood

Two weeks on from the events of …Hummingbird, Rue is back in her efforts for recovery, and reaches out to Ali. However, her mother Leslie fears for her well-being after discovering she’s not going to be able to get Rue into a facility.

Fez takes in a girl named Faye, the girlfriend of his drug-dealing associate Custer, who has motives of his own against Fez and Ashtray.

Cassie and Nate aren’t finding their romance as fun now it’s out in the open. Nate resorts to horrific new measures to make sure his father’s secret life remains hidden, but later makes peace with Jules after the catfishing events of season one.

Lexi begins to worry about how her play will be perceived, and Kat makes a decision about her relationship with Ethan.

Episode 7: The Theater and Its Double

It’s the day of Lexi’s play - and it doesn’t take long for the student body to realise they have become the inspiration behind its contents. Soon, significant moments of their lives, as seen through the eyes of Lexi, are put on display to everyone - including their parents and the teachers.

The result has some major repercussions for everyone involved – starting with Nate who, feeling like he’s been made a joke out, ends things with a furious Cassie.

Meanwhile, Leslie makes a harsh admission to Rue for the sake of her younger daughter, Gia, Jules makes a decision about the truth she now has in her hands, and Maddy starts thinking about her future away from East Highland.

Episode 8: All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name

Lexi’s play ends in carnage when her sister Cassie goes feral over its contents in front of the packed audience.

Fez and Ashtray find themselves in dangerous trouble after a visit by Custer, which ends in a horrific tragedy for everyone involved.

Nate makes a bold decision to put an end to the lies of his father, and Rue finally takes a positive step towards a brighter future in the wake of her efforts for sobriety.
