Here’s everything you need to know about the new documentary series…

What is Dart Kings about?

Dart Kings takes viewers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane through the golden age of darts and shines a spotlight on the nation’s most unlikely sporting heroes: Eric Bristow, Jocky Wilson and Phil Taylor.

In 1972, darts staggered out of the pub and onto British primetime television, bringing with it a cast of – by today’s standards - unlikely sporting heroes. Today, discipline is key to sporting success but in those first moments when the game hit the bigtime, the greatest players mixed extraordinary skill at the oche with boozing, chain-smoking, and an open-door policy to fans and the media alike.

Yet it was this combination of skill and raw, unfiltered personality that brought in television audiences of over 10 million and created some of the most memorable characters in sporting history.

Against a backdrop of rising unemployment and unrest in 1980s Britain, darts brought entertainment and energy to British audiences. Join us as we explore the incredible journeys of three of the greatest names in darts, charting their rise, rivalries, heartache, and triumphs through the 1970s, ‘80s and ’90s.

Who are the Dart Kings?

Eric Bristow

Eric Bristow, born in 1957, was nicknamed "The Crafty Cockney" during his time as a professional darts player. He started playing the game at the age of 12.

He was ranked World No. 1 by the World Darts Federation a record five times, was a five-time World Champion, a five-time World Masters Champion, a four-time World Cup singles champion and two-time News of the World Darts Championship winner.

He later formed his own darts organisation, now known as the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).

When Bristow officially retired from the sport in 2007, he joined the Sky Sports team as their resident darts pundit.

Bristow remained devoted to the game for the rest of his life, dying in April 2018 from a heart attack while attending a Premier League Darts event in Liverpool.

Phil Taylor

Phil Taylor, born in 1960, was mentored by Bristow during the early stages of his career in the 1980s, before becoming a defined name in the sport in his own right.

Nicknamed The Power, he is considered one of the greatest darts players of all time –  winning 214 professional tournaments, a record 85 major titles and a record 16 World Championships.

He officially returned from the professional game in 2018 after the 2018 World Championships, but later joined the World Seniors Darts Championship in 2022, where he played for two more years.

Jocky Wilson

Jocky Wilson was a Scottish darts player, born in 1950. Becoming a full-time professional player in 1979, he’s won the World Professional Darts Championship twice - once in 1982, and again 1989.

He held an impressive record at the championship, reaching at least the quarter-finals every year without fail from from his debut in 1979 until 1991.

However, he suddenly retired from the game in December 1995, with no prior announcement.

Wilson would then withdraw from the public eye completely amid a series of health issues.

Despite his absence, the PDC announced a new tournament called The Jocky Wilson Cup in 2009, which saw Scotland's best players playing against England's best.

Wilson died in March 2012, just two days after his 62nd birthday. He was survived by his wife.
