Dominic West as Dr Chris

What happens in Brassic Series 7 Episode 4 – ‘The Wizard of E’?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

As episode four kicks off, Curtis is being chased by a drone, causing him to freak out. Diving into the pub, he shares his worries with the group, who don’t quite believe that he’s being followed. Blaming everyone down to the HMRC, Curtis compares it to being in Black Mirror, though Vinnie and the gang encourage him to chill out.

Vinnie heads to see Dr Chris, who himself has taken into reading poetry and “appreciating the small stuff” even becoming friends with a squirrel he’s named Nibbles. Vinnie thinks he’s a bit wild.

Ally, Fay, Sugar, Jay and Mick go looking for the drone, chasing it down and finding out it belongs to a young boy. Taking a picture of the kid, they send it to Curtis, before tracking down the kid’s house. His mum opens the door and immediately recognises Curtis – introducing herself as Valerie Vine.

The kid explains he did it for his mum, who wanted to find him but had heard he’d gone off grid after his breakdown/epiphany. Valerie explains that she had known Curtis during their rave days – especially ‘Everything Starts with An E’, an illegal acid house club night where he was the DJ. At those nights, Valerie had met and fallen in love with her husband, Vernon, crediting the music Curtis played.

Vernon’s now dying, having been diagnosed with stage four cancer, and she wants to have one last rave with him before he passes, with Curtis back on the decks. While Curtis says those nights weren’t the best for him, Valerie begs him to come back for one night only to say goodbye to a dying man.

Back at Vinnie’s, Curtis remembers the acid house heydays, and the illegal raves they would hold at abandoned mills. He fears that those days can never return though. The gang disagree, saying the people who went before would come back for nostalgia’s sake, while others would go for something to do. Curtis accepts, and the gang go on a mission to find the perfect venue – and when they find it, Curtis says they need to find Matty Ravenscroft, aka The Wizard of E.

Reliving the Glory Days

Their search starts with Kenny Rogers at a vinyl market stall, who leads them to see S**t Sue, Matty’s sister, who is a conspiracy theorist who believes the world’s elite are drinking the blood of young children. She believes people are also bugging her phone and her brother has been snatched by the state and is now in a prison for “secret dissidents and radicals”. Naturally, the gang think she may not be telling the truth, and leave.

However, they’re stopped by Sue’s son, who says the real reason Matty left was because he was done listening to Sue’s wild theories several years ago. Instead, he’d last heard he was living in Goa with an old crush, Angie Rose, after reconnecting with her on Facebook. Curtis remembers Angie – she was a female bouncer, and his first love. She’d taken cash off a drug dealer to turn a blind eye but had got in trouble when a second gang had asked the same thing and she turned them down. They were later chased down the road, and shot in the leg, which had changed her life.

The thought of connecting with her again freaks him out, and he thinks about pulling out from the plan, but Ally tracks Angie down on Facebook, revealing she got married last year –but not to Matty. Matty is in the wedding pictures though... he’s the priest.

Across town, Davey goes into a cheese shop with a barrage of questions, looking for a gift for a “big cheese”, while Ally and Fay are left fuming when their camper van is nicked, taking all their possessions with them. Ally’s day is made worse by the sudden arrival of her dad, Farmer Jim, who starts questioning Fay about being a lesbian in the kind of way Jim only can (read: very inappropriately).

When they shut him up and tell him to leave them alone because they need to sort out the van, he instead offers to let them stay with him at the farm. It touches Ally, who accepts. Once there, she finds her room almost exactly as she left it. Ally later shares with Fay that she hated living there, because it reminds her of her mum, who was often sad during their time together. Fay says they only have to be there a few days.

The rave party is set up with posters going up online – but it is immediately flagged by the police, who track down the IP address to Ally’s computer. Seeing it as a chance to shut Vinnie and the gang down, Detective Slater starts investigating – getting nowhere with Farmer Jim before heading to Kenny Rogers’ vinyl store. Antagonising him by breaking his stock, record by record, Kenny breaks when Slater starts targeting Dark Side of the Moon.

Reunion

As Mick, Jay and Fay head to get a generator, lights and speakers for the event, Davey attacks a man called Joey, holding a stolen cheese wire against his neck to threaten him to back off. But Joey hits him back and Davey runs for it – not before Joey swears revenge for the attack.

Curtis heads to confession to reunite with Matty, and the pair share life updates. Matty said he was in a bad place, paranoid and alone, which is when he found the church. Curtis asks him to come back to the rave scene for one last shot, saying they changed peoples’ lives for the better during those years, which in their own way is positive, the same way the church has done for others. Touched by the sentiment, Matty agrees to become the Wizard of E, one last time, in celebration of the dying man.

However, their happy moment is ruined by Slater and his team, who raid the venue and put a stop to the illegal event.

Only You

Back at home, Ally is struggling to sleep, remembering hearing Jim and her mum arguing. She decides to confront Jim, waking him up in his sleep and saying all she wanted when she was younger was a good dad - why couldn’t he be that for her?

Heading outside, Jim said that her mum had anxiety and depression that made their marriage tough. He admits to being a drunk and flirting with other women, but that was more to hide from his crumbling marriage. Ally counters that he showed no interest in looking after her or being a dad, picking them up from school or even reading her a bedtime story, but Jim said he was always proud of her, and loves the memories of driving with her in his tractor.

Ally says that she’s found a story she wrote as a kid called The Lonely Lion, which explained how alone she felt inside when she needed to be tough. Jim apologises for making her feel that way, but Ally doesn’t want to hear it and walks off.

The next day, down the pub, the group worry about how to break to Val and Vernon that their request has fallen apart – but Matty arrives to save the day, saying he has a “bigger man than the law” in his corner. Saying he knows of a new venue, he leaves the rest down to the gang – who get to work grafting, stealing and gathering what they need to make this party a success.

With the plan in motion, Ally releases the location – and soon dozens of ravers old and new begin descending on Matty’s church to have a party to remember. Even Kenny Rogers helps them out, sending Slater and his team on a wild goose chase to the wrong venue to keep them away.

With ecstasy and drinks flowing, Val and Vern get the send-off they were dreaming of, Ally and Jim have a sweet moment together, and the group celebrate a job well done.
