When it comes to saving lives, the team of South Hill Ambulances are ready to take the call – even though they may be some eccentric characters.
Across two seasons, Blood delves into the day-to-day lives of the team as they navigate work and personal lives as they inevitably mix. Spending all your days with people will do that after a while.
Here are the key characters you need to know.

Maleek
Played by: Samson Kayo (Famalam, The Bubble)
Maleek has a heart of gold, but at times, a head of lead. As a paramedic and driver, Maleek has higher aspirations beyond that of his work, and really wants to be seen as a hero.
Trouble is, he also can be a bit reckless, and his love of talking sometimes gets in the way of the job. When he accidentally electrocutes his partner with a defibrillator, he’s left less-than-pleased when he’s made to team up with newcomer Wendy.
Wendy
Played by: Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Cobra)
Recently moved from Nottingham to London, Wendy is bright, bubbly and almost always positive – which gets on the nerves of Maleek, who thinks she’s naive and clueless when it comes to treating patients.
However, she’s also very clued up, and is more than happy to help out others around her, including Maleek when he doesn’t seize opportunities.
After leaving her family in Nottingham, she’s also excited to take on the world of dating.
Jo
Played by: Lucy Punch (Motherland, Bad Teacher)
Jo is the boss of the team at South Hill ambulance station, having risen through the ranks quickly and knows how to lead a team and run a tight ship.
However, she spends most of her days pining over Lawrence, seeking any opportunity she can spend time with him. Not that he notices.
Lawrence
Played by: Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh, The Great)
Lawrence is a bit of a loner when it comes to work. After the death of his wife, Karen, he’s also a bit of a downer – though that doesn’t seem to deter Jo.
Gary
Played by: Adrian Scarborough (Gavin & Stacey, Sanditon)
Gary is a long-standing member of the team, but somehow seems to have this knack of being constantly overlooked.
Having initially trained Jo, he now has to work under her – and even though he helps out his fellow paramedics, at times they struggle to even know who he is.
He does have a kind heart though, even if his patience is beginning to wear increasingly thin.

Kareshma
Played by: Aasiya Shah (Raised By Wolves, Unforgotten)
Kareshma is one of the newest members of the team – but she has massive ambitions, and she’s not afraid to let everyone around her know it.
Immediately getting herself on the wrong side of Jo with her demanding nature, Kareshma will let nothing stand in the way of her getting what she wants. First step, a position in the ambulance vans.
Darryl and Darrell
Played by: Kevin 'KG' Garry (Ted Lasso, Sumotherhood) and Sam Campbell (Fisk, Long Head)
Darryl and Darrell are partners in almost every way – never seen without the other. They live together, work together and spend holidays together.
They’re also great at their jobs, even if they do sing George Ezra’s ‘Shotgun’ while they perform CPR.
George
Played by: Katherine Kelly (Criminal UK, The Crow Girl)
Joining the cast in series two, George is the acting mental health counsellor for the team. She’s also incredibly annoying to Jo, with the pair having differing views when it comes to mental health.
Regardless, she’s always there for a listening ear for the crew.
Spencer
Played by: Nathan Foad (Our Flag Means Death, Mandy)
Spencer is Wendy’s son, who causes trouble for her when he joins the team in season two.
Not very self-sufficient, Spencer’s presence provides some context into why she moved to London in the first place.
Radio
Played by: Ellie White (The Windsors, Stath Lets Flats)
On hand to send the paramedics out to work is the never-seen face of the Radio.
She’s also available for a sarcastic comment over the state of the jobs they’re heading to.
