The Iconic One-Piece
In 1959, Barbara Millicent Roberts - Barbie to her friends – took the world by storm, hitting shelves as “Teenage Fashion Barbie”, sporting a black and white striped one-piece bathing suit. That piece of beachwear would be the first of many looks in her ever-expanding closet and is fittingly how we are first introduced to Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s movie. In a scene parodying Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Margot Robbie dons the classic Americana swimsuit, standing as a monolith before an incredulous bunch of little girls. Minds are actually blown.

Pink Gingham Sundress
You can’t do Barbie without pink. The colour is so integral to the film that the set design caused a global shortage of pink paint in the supply chain. So, no surprises then that one of the first outfits Barbie dons in Barbie Land is this breezy pink gingham sundress. As the beach is the place to hang out, Jacqueline Durran knew she had to capture the Malibu Barbie look just right. But as well as taking inspiration from one of the most famous iterations of the doll, Durran also looked to the 1950s and 1960s for a French Riviera twist, with Brigitte Bardot being a particular influence.

Disco Jumpsuit
The Golden Rule of Barbie Land: Do not try to upstage Barbie. You will lose. No where is this made clearer than at Barbie’s big blow out party with choreographed dancing and all the Barbies, where Barbie is truly the belle of the ball in this glittering jumpsuit. Ken also gets in on the 1970s inspired act with his own retro jumpsuit, but Barbie is the main event. Ken is just another matching accessory.

Pink “Western Stampin’ Barbie” Two-Piece / Neon “Hot Skatin’ Barbie” Leotard
The great thing about building a movie around Barbie is you have unlimited options for inspiration thanks to Barbie’s forever evolving wardrobe. So Jacqueline Durran didn’t have to look far to find models for specific scenes. Much of Barbie’s wardrobe is built on practicality, so for every activity there’s a full outfit to match. So for the final leg of Barbie and Ken’s journey to the Real World, undertaken on roller skates, Durran modelled the duo on the “Hot Skatin’ Barbie” set from 1994. And when that neon look becomes too conspicuous, the pair get changed into a western themed ensemble based on “Western Stampin’ Barbie” from 1993.

Ken’s Faux Fur Coat
As Ken’s only real job is “beach”, much of his outfit choices are based around beach and sportswear. Anything else is him being dressed to match Barbie, such is the lot in life for a Ken Doll. However, when Ken discovers the concept of The Patriarchy, he breaks out a new look that Durran describes as “archetypal masculine” while also carrying a motif of horses (based on Ken’s misreading that the world is run by men and horses). This over-the-top faux fur coat is inspired by Sylvester Stallone, who had a penchant for not-so-faux coats after his success with the Rocky films.

Pink Birkenstocks
For every yin there is a yang. When Barbie’s perfectly arched feet go flat, (the horror), all of a sudden, those designer stiletto heels aren’t so comfortable anymore. (“I would never wear heels if my feet were shaped like this!”) So as recommended by “Weird” Barbie, enter the Birkenstock. These cork and latex soled sandals may not have the pizazz of Barbie’s usual footwear, but they are at least carrying podiatrists seal of approval for those suffering with flat feet or fallen arches. And just because you’re going for comfort doesn’t mean you can’t pink it up – as seen in the pair sported by Barbie the closing moments of the movie.
