What happens in Rooster Season 1, Episode 7 ‘All The Dogs’ Names’?
_*Warning: Major spoilers ahead_*
Greg lectures his class about the importance of researching aspects of your novels and reminds them all that a deadline is looming. But Tommy can’t even look at him, keeping his sunglasses on.
Pulling him aside after class, Greg tries to talk to him, but the student is too scarred from seeing Greg naked in his house at the end of the last episode, having realised he’s sleeping with his mother, Cristle. Sharing his concerns with Cristle, she tells Greg Tommy’s dad left to be with his math teacher, so he has some unresolved issues with teachers sleeping with his parents.
With that, she gently breaks up with him, saying that he was leaving soon anyway. The pair have one last make out session before going their separate ways.
Breakfast Treats
Archie waits outside Katie’s class to speak to her and asks if they can still be in each other's lives, even though they’re not together anymore. She says no, but he sweet talks her with a croissant and promises to bring her one every morning before class.
Dylan talks to Greg about her disappointment at losing the Dean position, but they’re interrupted by Walt, who’s not happy Greg has put a chain on the door connecting their rooms. Greg is given the position as interim head coach of the hockey team, and despite his protests, it becomes clear it wasn’t a choice.
On one of their walks, Walt and Dylan talk about her future at the college, and he offers her the position as head of the English department. She thanks him but says no – she wants to be Dean of Faculty, taking over from Riggs, who has been constant trouble.
Mo and Archie share uncomfortable company together at a diner, while waiting for Sunny and her father, Fred (guest star Jim O’Heir), who’s come to visit his pregnant daughter. He embraces Archie warmly as he’s excited about becoming a grandfather.
‘Fight For Me’
In Walt’s office, Greg sees Cristle upset and crying on her desk, and she admits she’d hoped he would fight for their relationship more. Because he didn’t, she’s noticeably distracted at work, messing up Walt’s schedule, which annoys him – though he blames Greg rather than Cristle, knowing something’s going on.
The next day at class, as promised, Archie arrives to see Katie with a breakfast pastry and some flirting. She tries to fight it, but he knows he’s winning her over.
Greg runs into Fred, who is walking Archie and Katie’s dog, Roscoe. When Greg realises who he is, he makes awkward small talk and a hasty exit.
When Greg notices her absence, Walt confirms that Cristle is taking her Thanksgiving vacation early and openly blames him for it. He believes Greg’s recent behaviour is a deliberate attempt to sabotage him, believing he’s doing so for his ex-wife Elizabeth to take his place as President of the school.
Greg reassures him that’s not the case at all and is able to bury the hatchet by allowing Walt to ride his e-bike. He agrees to talk to Dylan about accepting the Head of English Faculty position.
At breakfast with Sunny and her dad, Archie is clearly trying to charm Fred but is nervous about it. When Sunny leaves for a doctor's appointment for the baby, Archie doesn’t go with her, which prompts Fred to strongly encourage him to follow her and embrace the pregnancy. Archie reluctantly agrees and heads after her.
Facing Your Future
Katie encourages Dylan to fight for the Deanship. Greg tries to steer her toward the Head of Faculty job, but they realise immediately that Walt has put him up to it and aren’t impressed.
Next day, during a meeting with Walt, Katie admits she finds Walt intimidating, but fights on Dylan’s behalf, bringing student and former “For Katie” activist Zoe along to campaign for more gender equality on campus. She reminds Walt that, while he’s under pressure, it’s his decision to make, and he needs to choose.
Later that day, he meets with Dean Riggs, telling him his crude behaviour won’t fly anymore. He needs to be better or be replaced. Dean says the school is his life and he doesn’t want to leave. He agrees to try and change, telling Walt he “can’t give someone a wake up call without giving them a chance to wake up”.
At the doctors’ office, Archie sees an ultrasound of the baby for the first time and melts. He excitedly kisses Sunny as the prospect of becoming a father becomes more real for him.
That evening, Greg visits Walt in his sauna. He’s still not happy with him, and shares that he knows Greg had sex on his desk. He also admits he knows he’s a lot to handle at times, but he’s lonely and had hoped he and Greg would become “thich as thieves” during his time as writer-in-residence. Greg sympathises, realising how isolated Walt actually is in his position, and encourages him to make his own choice over the Dean argument, and not to be influenced by the friendships he has with Dylan and Riggs.
The next day, Katie waits outside her lecture room for Archie, but he swerves her. She’s hurt but puts on a brave face as she starts class.
Walt tells Dylan he’s giving her the Dean job - but she needs to find someone for the Head of English first. She accepts.
At their offices, Walt cuts off the chain on the door between him and Greg with a pair of bolt cutters, but promises to start knocking first before coming in. Greg asks if Walt is free, and they go for a bike ride together.
