The Rookie is six seasons in and would be nothing without its beloved characters making us root for them throughout.
John Nolan may have started off the show as an outsider many believed was having a “mid-life crisis” by joining the force in his 40s, but he’s now proven himself to be an essential member of the team and loved across the force.
Now available on Sky Witness, viewers will be able to catch-up on The Rookie from the beginning, with plenty of drama to get hooked onto.
Here’s everything you need to know about the key cast and characters in this crime procedural.
Who are the key characters in The Rookie?
John Nolan
Played by: Nathan Fillion (Serenity, Castle, Firefly)
John Nolan is a 45-year-old former construction worker who looks for a new lease of life with the LAPD after having an epiphany after being involved in stopping a bank robbery.
Having dropped out of college early on due to his girlfriend becoming pregnant, John feels he has put his life on hold for the sake of his family.
Now he is divorced and his son, Henry, is a freshman at college, he is free to forge his own path. Enrolling in the LAPD (as one of the only agencies to accept new officers over the age of 37) he immediately ruffles feathers as his peers and superiors assume it is part of a midlife crisis.
Despite the challenges, Nolan is determined to make a difference in his new career.
Angela Lopez
Played by: Alyssa Diaz (Ray Donovan, Narcos: Mexico, Zoo)
Another Training Officer at Mid-Wiltshire Station, Lopez is originally paired with the eager, but naïve, rookie Jackson West.
She is later promoted to detective and balances her work with motherhood.
Sgt Wade Grey
Played by: Richard T. Jones (Event Horizon, Santa Clarita Diet, Phone Booth)
Sergeant Wade Grey is an Armed Forced veteran who now serves as watch commander at the Mid-Wiltshire Station.
He is one of the many detractors of John’s intention to join the LAPD and writes it off as a midlife crisis. However, as the series progresses Nolan convinces him that he has some potential.
Lucy Chen
Played by: Melissa O’Neil (A Simple Favor, Dark Matter, Rogue)
Joining the force at the same time as John Nolan is Lucy Chen, an ambitious 29-year-old rookie paired up with Training Officer Tim Bradford.
Her parents are both psychologists and see her joining the force as an act of rebellion. At the start of the series, it becomes apparent that she and Nolan are actually involved romantically and are keeping this a secret.
Timothy “Tim” Bradford
Played by: Eric Winter (Days Of Our Lives, Rosewood, Witches of East End)
Tim Bradford is introduced in the first episode as a Training Officer at the Mid-Wiltshire Division and is paired with Lucy Chen. Tough and no-nonsense, he does not give Lucy or anyone else an easy time.
While he doesn’t care to share it, he has had his own share of hard times; his marriage to Isabel, a former narcotics officer, ended painfully when she became a drug addict.
Nyla Harper
Played by: Mekia Cox (Chicago Med, Once Upon A Time, Secrets and Lies)
Introduced in season two as Nolan’s new training officer, Nyla is an experienced detective who has four years of experience as an undercover cop.
She later returns to detective work and is paired with new Detective Angela Lopez.
Wesley Evers
Played by: Shawn Ashmore (X-Men, Conviction, The Following)
Wesley is a defence lawyer who is initially a thorn in Lopez’s side, with the two butting heads on a number of occasions.
This tension could only go one of two ways, and the two eventually start dating and go on to get married, having two children.
Bailey Nune
Played by: Jenna Dewan (Step-Up, Superman and Lois)
When we first meet Bailey, she works as a firefighter at the Los Angeles Fire Department.
But she’s also a woman of many talents, serving as a reserve in the Army National Guard and a teacher of dance-fighting disciplines called capoeira.
However, she also has a dark past, particularly when it comes to her sociopathic ex-husband, Jason Wyler, with whom she had an emotionally abusive relationship to the point that he tried to ruin her life and career by planting cocaine in her car.
Over time, she becomes romantically attached to John, and later becomes his wife.
Aaron Thorsen
Played by: Tru Valentino (Fast and Furious: Spy Racers, Madagascar: A Little Wild)
Joining the force in season four, Aaron has come from a privileged background, with his father being a famed rapper, and himself growing a TikTok career flaunting his lifestyle.
However, his life came crashing down after the murder of his friend, for which he was arrested and tried for. While he was eventually found not guilty, he lost almost everything, and still has some doubters.
He decided to find new meaning in his life and became a policeman.
Celina Juarez
Played by: Lisseth Chavez (Legends of Tomorrow, Chicago PD, The Fosters)
Celina is a high-flyer who knows the criminal justice system and graduated from the police academy top of her class.
She has a strong belief in the spiritual, after a psychic helped her family recover her kidnapped younger sister when she was a child. Although the sister died, her belief remained, and she’s learned to rely heavily on her intuition.
While her instincts are good, how she acts on them sometimes causes trouble.
She joins the show as John’s first probationary trainee after he becomes a Training Officer.
