As The Pitt returns for a second season, things are still stressful for the team at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center – but change is in the air.

With Dr Robby preparing to head off on a three-month sabbatical away from the ER, the team welcomes Dr Al-Hashimi as she arrives to take over his position.

But he still has one shift to go, and with his mental health already pushed to the edge, a familiar face returning and a deposition hanging over the head of Dr Mel King, he has to keep his nerve for the next few hours before he can ride off on his motorbike.

With Pittsburgh celebrating the Fourth of July outside, there is no limit to the amount of emergencies that could head through the door.

Running for 15 episodes – one for each hour of the shift – how will the team cope with what they’re about to be dealing with?

The Pitt season 2 starts with Dr Robby heading to start his last shift at the hospital before heading off on sabbatical – planning a three-month cross-country trip on his motorcycle.

As Fourth of July celebrations begin in the city, Dr Robby welcomes Dr Al-Hashimi to the team to set her up as his temporary replacement. Langdon makes his return to the ward for the first time in six months – but not everyone is pleased to see him.

Frequent flyer Louie returns with a new problem, Santos becomes concerned as she treats an injured child, a homeless man named Digby is brought in, an erratic patient gives McKay cause for concern and a baby is abandoned in the ER.

“Baby Jane Doe” is given a medical exam by the team, but Al-Hashimi’s reaction is a little concerning. Mel admits her fears about the upcoming deposition to Dr Robby, and gets her confidence knocked when a patient disappears. Langdon begins making amends to the team, while Javadi treats a nun with a surprising condition. McKay goes up against the brass in a bid to get a patient further treatment, and Whitaker has to tackle another loss on the shift while also looking after new team members, Ogilvie and Kwon. Al-Hashimi and Robby debate the role of AI in medicine as she shows a new app to the team.

A tasered college student, Jackson arrives after causing injury to a campus security guard in the process of seemingly suffering from psychosis. Robby and Al-Hashimi work together to treat a patient after a motorbike accident – but he’s not the one they should be concerned about.

The father of the injured girl arrives at the hospital but faces some tough questions before a diagnosis is made. Yana, a burn victim who suffers from PTSD after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting is triggered by fireworks. McKay’s perseverance pays off as she picks up on a serious undiagnosed condition on her patient. A mass casualty event sends another hospital into lockdown, sending all ambulances over to the Pitt.

As the team prepares for a string of incoming ambulances, Robby readies a team to deal with the first arrivals. A young man arrives covered in glass after falling through a skylight, but treatment proves more difficult than simple shard removal.

Whitaker saves a patient's life after spotting early signs of something serious, before checking up on Louie. Langdon discovers one of his co-workers has an online following after a young woman specifically requests them, and is given the opportunity to prove himself back on the ward.

Santos comes under fire for her paperwork filing, and teams up with Mel to help a patient with an eating disorder.

Langdon has a breakthrough, but Dr Robby isn’t ready to forgive him just yet. A prison inmate is brought in for treatment after being assaulted, but his care is compromised by his guard’s refusal to remove restraints.

As Santos is thrown into a paperwork hell, newcomer Ogilvie puts himself at risk as he treats a patient and in the line of fire with another. Noelle helps a patient’s family as they navigate the costly price of treatment, while another patient’s diagnosis could prove fatal.

A sudden deterioration of a patient leaves the team scrambling to save him.

The team suffers the loss of someone they practically considered one of their own – something even more heartbreaking when they go through their belongings. Shaken by the sudden death, nurses Dana and Emma look after the body.

Another motorcyclist is admitted as Jackson suffers another episode. Bed shortages force Dr Robby to prioritise patients. Langdon continues to make his apologies around the team.

Santos relies on an AI tool for treatment too much, leading to another problem with a senior member of the team.

After saying goodbye to a friend, the team get back to work – with Dana and Emma working together to collect a rape kit from an assault victim who is second-guessing telling the police. Santos has communication issues with a patient, while Jackson’s parents want to discharge him despite his episodes. Night team member Abbot makes an unexpected arrival as he brings in a patient while working as a SWAT medic.

Langdon finally has an overdue discussion with Dr Robby, but he might not like what he has to say. Baby Jane Doe continues to be cared for by the team as they await the arrival of CPS. Just when things look calm, a cyber-attack threatens the ward’s ability to run everything.

With the computer system down, Dr Kwon shows off a surprise skill to bring some order to the chaos – but younger staff struggle to adjust without the technology they’ve relied on.

Dana is left infuriated when she discovers police failed to collect evidence from weeks ago.

Ogilvie gets into hot water with McKay and Whitaker for insensitive remarks, while Javadi helps Jackson's parents come to terms with his apparent diagnosis. Mohan is given advice about her future specialty, while Mel is given a pep talk about the deposition. Langdon’s apology tour continues with mixed results, while Kwon stops a misdiagnosis.

Santos and Dr Robby work together to help a child who’s lost fingers in a firecracker incident, but it raises concerns about his childcare.

Javadi comes under fire again as she struggles to update patient care in the current analogue system while the computers are down, almost costing a life.

Mel’s anxiety over the deposition is only heightened by the arrival of her sister Becca who is requiring care – so she leaves her in the hands of someone she trusts.

Dr Robby has an offer for Whitaker during his sabbatical, while Dana calls in reinforcements as the team begins to drown in paperwork. But a fresh emergency puts new pressure on the already struggling team.

As patients of a mass casualty event after a waterslide collapse begin to arrive, the team springs into action. Dr Javadi’s reprimands catch the attention of her mother, Dr Shamsi, but she gets little sympathy from Dr Robby, much to the criticism of Al-Hashimi.

Santos is berated by superior staff members over her treatment of Langdon, leading to a rude awakening about her attitude.

Mel discovers something about her sister that sends her into a new spiral, while the arrival of Dr Robby’s friend Duke leads to Whitaker sharing his concerns about what he actually has planned on his sabbatical. McKay helps a family say goodbye to a loved one.

McKay and Ogilvie look after a homeless woman with a nasty wound. The newbies miss another warning sign that almost causes a patient's death, and Dr Robby takes it out on Dr Mohan. The team are unnerved as ICE agents arrive with a detainee, leaving everyone on edge and in fear they could be arrested as well.

Al-Hashimi stops a guilt-ridden mother from doing something she’ll regret. Mel struggles to adjust to the news from her sister, leading to a heart-to-heart with Dana. Dr Robby considers delaying his sabbatical as Duke receives medical attention, and Langdon and Santos have an overdue face-to-face.

Emma’s attempts to treat a sedated patient, Larson, ends in disaster.

Dana comes to the rescue, though by doing so it alerts Dr Robby to something she’s been hiding.

After witnessing Langdon and Santos’s confrontation, Al-Hashimi comes up with a new strategy while she’s in charge, and makes her feelings known to both of them.

Dr Robby’s behaviour becomes an increasing concern for those he works closest with, who share their fears with each other.

Santos begins to buckle under pressure, leading her to consider an old relief method. As the shift comes to an end, Dr Robby prepares to leave but is stopped by a new arrival.

As the night shift arrives, Dr Robby grows concerned about the ward he’s leaving behind – and who he’s leaving it in the hands of.

Dr Langdon has a slip-up in the presence of Dr Henderson, so he seeks solace in someone who doesn’t judge him.

Dana and Emma look after Digby, who is still in the hospital.

As the team finally catches a break with the malware incident, but the updates reveal something that leaves the team reeling.

Dana confronts Dr Robby about her growing concerns about his behaviour, leading to a startling comment that leaves her even more worried.

Robby continues to stick around to support Duke but receives another sign his sabbatical could be cursed – especially when two paramedics mistreat a patient over fears of handling her body.

Dana calls in reinforcements to help her with her worries.

As Fourth of July parties kick off, two men arrive from a bar fight, while another man suffers a nasty injury from a tug of war competition.

Langdon has a breakthrough in getting back into Dr Robby’s good books, while Whitaker loses something important.

As Robby finally opens up about his mental health, Al-Hashimi comes clean about something she’s been hiding.

As Dr Robby discovers the truth about Al-Hashimi, her position as his interim replacement comes under threat.

But there’s no time to rest as he helps Abbot with a woman who is experiencing complications from a freebirth.

Langdon discovers the latest on a patient he’s been treating all shift, Whitaker makes a choice about Dr Robby’s offer – and has a surprising new friend picking him up as he heads home for the evening.

Javadi and Mohan both consider their futures in medicine, Digby says goodbye to the team, and Dr Robby finds comfort in an unlikely place.

After finally finishing their stressful shift, Mel and Santos let their hair down.
