Welcome to The Pitt – the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, where being overworked and underfunded is just par for the course.

Tracking a 15-hour day minute-by-minute, Dr Michael Robinavitch (better known as Dr Robby) starts his shift at 7am as planned, ready to welcome new recruits and handle the administration who are more focused on patient satisfaction scores than actual results.

But with emotions running high amid patients and staff alike, and the day proving personally difficult for Dr Robby, the unpredictability of what lies ahead takes its toll on everyone involved.

Running for 15 episodes, it is a long day for everyone who passes through the doors. Here’s how the first season plays out.

The Pitt starts with Dr Robby heading to start his daily shift at the hospital and welcoming some new doctors to the team.

As Dr Robby and the new doctors start their shift, things get off to a heavy start when a non-English speaking woman arrives after being pushed onto subway tracks – causing Dr Javadi to have an adverse reaction.

Dr Robby is cornered by hospital administrators about the ward’s satisfaction record, while Dana Evans discovers one of the team is pregnant.

As Dr Mel King is taken under the wing of senior resident Frank Langdon, newcomer Dr Whittaker discovers the more grisly side of the emergency room.

When a mother named Theresa comes in with a suspicious illness, the true intent behind her visit causes concern for Drs Robby and McKay regarding her son, David.

Dr Langdon clashes with Dr Santos after she oversteps her bounds as a newcomer. McKay is revealed to be wearing an ankle monitor.

The parent of a child patient does not react well when child services get involved in the case, and Samira Mohan is forced to step in when paramedics fail to spot a patient’s medical condition.

Meanwhile, a pair of adult siblings come to a controversial decision regarding their elderly father who has Alzheimer’s and pneumonia; Robby struggles to break bad news to parents whose child is brain dead; a homeless man lets unleashes chaos in the emergency room.

Javadi learns more about McKay’s life as they treat an overdose case. Whitaker struggles to deal with his first major death as a doctor.

Santos struggles to make friends among her new colleagues as she continues to push her luck, and Dr Robby issues a warning to Mohan over her slow treatment process.

More chaos ensues when an ambulance is stolen from the premises.

As the stolen ambulance becomes local news, Dr Robby comforts loved ones of a lost patient, triggering his own memories of losing a father figure.

Santos faces the wrath of Mohan for her poor bedside manner, and then later Langdon when she once again oversteps without informing a superior.

The staff in the waiting room face verbal abuse from angry patients – particularly one who wants to make himself known.

Mel and Mohan offer support to a single father who arrives with his teenage daughter, and a 17-year-old arrives to be prescribed a medicated abortion – but isn’t telling the full truth to the doctors.

Santos and Langdon continue to clash, as does Javadi and McKay over treatment of patients, while Mohan and Robby club together to help a struggling Whitaker.

Robby gets a visit from the son of his ex-girlfriend, Jake, whom he’s gifting tickets to a music festival, PittFest, for that day.

Collins deals with the 17-year-old seeking a medical abortion, while Mel helps an adult woman who is looking after her elderly mother.

Langdon finds out Robby is recommending him for a fellowship, and Santos notices something that could undo his efforts.

As the stolen ambulance finally returns, the doctors have to deal with those who took it.

Collins hides her excitement about her own news but is encouraged by Dana to embrace it.

McKay begins to fear about David – Theresa’s teenage son – amid worrying behaviour.

Robby snaps at Gloria as she continues to push about patient satisfaction scores. Mel impresses Langdon when she uses her personal experience with autistic loved ones to help a neurodivergent patient.

Santos has suspicions about a fellow co-worker after she handles a patient that sparks a sense of justice in her.

A beauty influencer becomes Mohan and Javadi’s latest patient, with Collins stepping in to back Mohan up as Robby continues to pressure her.

Collins' happy news suffers a devastating setback.

Collins shakes off her own issues to focus on her work, telling no one. Santos continues to investigate her colleague, but attempts to share her concerns with a superior fall on deaf ears.

Langdon and Robby treat a patient with an honourable history within the emergency services. Mel asks Kiara to help her patients access homecare services.

The team is shaken when a young girl is brought in unresponsive, while Javadi finally gets on her mother’s good side with a smart call under her eye.

McKay fears there’s more going on with a patient who has an overbearing boss.

Collins finally shares what’s going on with Dana, just as Robby starts to realise something is up with her.

A fight breaks out in the waiting room as tensions rise, causing Dana to step in and try calm things down.

Santos once again treats a patient without superior approval, this time with Mohan alongside her, causing yet another clash with Langdon. But this time it catches Robby’s attention.

Whitaker finally gets a win after a struggle of a day.

Disaster strikes Dana when she takes five minutes for a cigarette break.

Police arrive to talk to Theresa about David, which doesn’t sit well with Robby, who scolds McKay for getting authorities involved with a struggling teenager.

While the team rallies around Dana following an incident outside, Whitaker, tries his best to remain positive for the wife of a severe burn victim.

McKay’s son Harrison makes an unexpected visit to the ER when her ex Chad is injured in a skateboarding accident.

Santos finally shares her concerns about a fellow doctor to Robby, forcing an impromptu locker check and a shock dismissal.

A shaken Dana tries to get back in action when Robby requests a pharmacy audit after getting unexpected news.

Collins and Mel handle a complicated labour and delivery, while Whitaker and Mohan make a risky decision when treating a patient.

Santos begins to realise the potential personal repercussions of her actions, while Robby is finally caught up with what’s going on with Collins.

As Dana and Robby discuss their future in the ER, they are distracted when they’re informed the music festival has suffered a mass casualty event.

It’s all systems go when dozens of patients arrive at the ward, but Robby is distracted when he can’t contact his former stepson who was at the festival.

As night shifters start early and dismissed workers make their return in the hopes of redemption, everyone has to get their head in the game in order to save as many people as they can – but it’s hard when the team are warned danger could be heading in their direction.

McKay and Robby fear that it has something to do with David.

As everyone is assigned their jobs amid the chaos, Santos catches an unwelcome visitor sneaking into the ER, and when blood runs low the team start donating themselves in order to meet the demand.

As desperate times call for desperate measures, the team are forced to think on their feet to deal with the influx of patients.

Meanwhile, as people arrive to find missing loved ones from the disaster, it’s up to Kiara and Lupe to match names and faces for the dozens of people they’re looking after.

With resources and morale at a low, Robby is heartbroken when one patient hits too close to home, and in his guilt has a panic attack.

When Dr Robby goes AWOL, an unlikely source is forced to help him get it together. As the patients from the mass event begin to stabilise, McKay gets some help from her father.

While Langdon and Santos continue to struggle to work together, Mel and Robby are forced to try and reason with a couple who would rather trust Google with regard to their critically sick teenage son.

Teenage David returns to the hospital but finds himself blindsided by Robby and McKay who have grown concerned about his behaviour.

A risky decision from McKay results in her getting in trouble.

With the panic finally dying down, Dr Robby is forced to step in and save McKay before the pair deal with the struggling teenage David.

Dr Santos realises what really happened to a patient and shows her softer side.

As Dr Langdon tries to get back in Robby’s good graces, Robby struggles to keep his composure when a family refuses to give their son the treatment they need.

As the shift finally comes to an end, the team return to their life away from the hospital as best they can.
