The Bear season 4 has Carmy, Sydney and the team at the restaurant facing hard decisions as they try to turn a profit.

But after a frustratingly mellow review from the Chicago Tribune, investor Uncle Jimmy is worried the restaurant doesn’t have what it takes to earn his money back, so comes with an ultimatum to Carmy and the team.

With morale at an all-time low, Carmy begins to question his life as a chef, though keeps it buried beneath the surface and away from Sydney and Richie.

With a matter of months to turn the place around, will their venture pay off? Or will they find themselves admitting defeat?

Season 4 starts shortly after the end of season 3’s finale, with a review from the Chicago Tribune carrying heavy weight about the future of the business.

After receiving a middling review in the Chicago Tribune, Carmy and the team are given a deadline to turn things around by Uncle Jimmy – complete with a deadline clock hanging on the wall as a reminder.

A flashback reveals how The Bear got its name, as Carmy, Sydney and Richie pivot and turn their attention to getting the restaurant a Michelin star to prove their worth, hiring a top team to turn the place around.

A few weeks later, budget cuts are beginning to affect morale – and the kitchen’s supplies. At the same time, Sydney and Carmy both begin to question what they really want out of The Bear – or if they want anything at all. Carmy has an overdue conversation with sister Sugar, who offers him some much needed advice.

Sydney and Carmy start working in sync to simplify the menu (and make it cheaper). Richie is still grappling with attending ex-wife Tiff’s wedding but is happily distracted by giving a guest a meal of a lifetime. As the only part of the restaurant turning a profit, Ebra recruits help to expand the income of the Beef window. Carmy comes to a decision about what he wants for his future.

Sydney visits Chef Shapiro as he prepares to open his new restaurant – that he wants her to run. Later visiting her cousin to get her hair done, her time away gives her some clarity on what she wants to do next – with sage advice from an 11-year-old.

At a support meeting, Carmy is left touched by another member’s story, and on his return to The Bear has some changes to make as Sydney receives a new partnership agreement for the business. Marcus makes the decision to sell his mother’s house but is pleasantly surprised by a familiar face joining the team. Sugar brings the newest member of The Bear family to meet the team. Sydney receives some heartbreaking news that leaves her head in a spin.

Sydney dashes to the hospital and finds comfort from an unexpected source. Richie opens up about the difficulties of co-parenting and his fears around a new father figure in his daughter’s life. Ebra is given a tempting suggestion from Albert for The Beef window.

The entire Berzatto family are present and correct for Tiff’s wedding, which means one thing: chaos is sure to ensue. Sydney is on hand to provide Richie some support, but Carmy is panicking at the idea of seeing his mother Donna. As a planned dance between Frank and Ava looms, she goes into hiding, leading to an impromptu but much-needed group therapy session under a table.

Sydney makes a choice about her future – but is she going to upset Carmy or Shapiro? Tina goes on a mission to have a pasta dish ready in three minutes and asks for help from someone more experienced to nail it down. Sugar returns to work and gets to grips with the finances, but doesn’t like what she sees. Carmy gathers his courage for something terrifying: a visit from his mother.

Carmy and Donna have a well-overdue heart-to-heart after years of avoiding each other. Ebra goes into business with Albert, who garners the support they need to get it off the ground. Tina makes a breakthrough in her mission to be a better chef.

Sugar receives exciting news from Food and Wine magazine, which signals a positive turn for everyone – but Sydney’s delight is numbed when she gets news about what’s involved in the new partnership agreement.

After simmering tension, Sydney finally confronts Carmy about everything that’s going on with him, leading to an angry head-to-head in the alley behind the restaurant. As Richie gets involved, hidden feelings and resentments finally come to the surface as a new agreement is made about the future of The Bear – and everyone’s part in it. But as Uncle Jimmy’s clock reaches zero, is it too late?
