The Bear is officially in business as season 3 kicks off – but Carmy is struggling with keeping his head in the game.

But if the team thought it was hard getting the business open, it’s truly out of the frying pan and into the fire as the real work begins.

With customers and reviewers to impress, books to balance, investors to pay back and the dynamics of the team at their most awkward… it’s all systems go.

Will they be able to keep their heads above water and turn a profit?

The Bear season 3 picks up immediately after the end of season 2, where Carmy found himself stuck in the walk-in refrigerator, inadvertently messing up his relationship with Claire and getting into a screaming match with Ritchie as a result.

Carmy has some apologies to make as he’s finally freed from the walk-in. Sydney rallies for Marcus as he receives some heartbreaking news. A flashback shows Carmy during his time as a chef in New York, a surprising diner he served one evening, and a new level of guilt he has around Mikey and his death. With renewed verve, he uses his experiences to come up with a new plan for The Bear.

Carmy’s new list of demands for his staff doesn’t go over well – especially one that seems a step too far. Sydney receives a business agreement to officially make her a partner in the restaurant. With tensions at an all-time high among the staff, Marcus’s return to the kitchen gives Carmy some unexpected emotional encouragement.

Across the next month at the business, Marcus says goodbye to a loved one, Carmy implements his new vision, and Richie gets to grips with the front of house.

However, these changes come at a literal cost, forcing Sugar and Uncle Jimmy to step in and pull rank as Carmy begins to melt under the pressure he’s put himself under.

When he finally boils over, an overdue confrontation sees Sydney discovering just what she could be getting herself into.

Sydney moves into a new apartment and runs into an esteemed businessman who has seen her work at The Bear. Richie finds himself torn over how to handle his young daughter, as his ex Tiff plans to marry fiancé Frank. Sugar realises a food critic they were expecting has already been and gone – leaving the team panicking about what they could say.

As the team awaits news about the review in the Chicago Tribune, Uncle Jimmy steps in with a helping hand to help the business become more cost efficient, but one recommendation forces Sugar to draw a line. Carmy’s business choices leave the kitchen scrambling as a dish they don’t have the ingredients for is requested, before some unexpected news leaves him even more in a panic.

In a flashback episode, Tina takes centre stage as we discover how she came to work with Mikey at the restaurant. Set years before present day, it becomes clear why she’s so dedicated to the business, as well as Mikey’s memory.

Carmy is left questioning the value of apologies when the actions don’t match. Sydney is offered an opportunity at a rival restaurant, leaving her torn over signing a new agreement with Carmy - especially when his behaviour in the kitchen becomes more volatile. Ebra finds joy in his work again, while Marcus talks legacy with Carmy and what that means to a chef. Sugar goes into labour.

Sugar finds herself with an unexpected birth partner when she can’t reach partner Pete or anyone at the restaurant. Soon Donna makes her grand arrival – though what version of her Sugar will get remains to be seen. Given the opportunity to step up for her daughter like never before, will Donna be the help she needs in this moment, or a hindrance?

Carmy gets some relationship advice from the Faks as they urge him to reconnect with Claire, before stepping in to take action themselves.

Carmy, Sydney and Richie prepare to head to a fancy event, but Sydney discovers some things that leave her even more doubtful about their supposed partnership.

As the team patiently wait for the release of the highly anticipated review which could make or kill their business in its tracks, Uncle Jimmy plies added pressure on Carmy.

Richie is invited to his ex’s wedding, but does he have the strength to actually go?

With The Bear closed for business for the day, Marcus and Tina bond as they use the kitchen to experiment.

At the dinner, Carmy, Richie and Sydney connect with old acquaintances, trading war stories from their time in kitchens, and having long overdue confrontations. But will the results be as cathartic as they hope it will be?

By the end of the night, the team have a lot to think over, but put big decisions aside to enjoy an afterparty at Sydney’s house.

But Carmy’s night off is disrupted when he discovers the Chicago Tribune’s review has finally dropped.
