Another true story recreation led by Colin Firth, The Staircase delves into the death of Kathleen Peterson, and the lengthy criminal investigation as to whether or not her husband, Michael Peterson, killed her.
After finding Kathleen dead at the bottom of their North Carolina home’s staircase, novelist Michael was accused of murder – though he steadfastly maintains his innocence to this day.
The 16-year case later became central to documentary, also called The Staircase, with this dramatic retelling showing the proposed alternate theories behind what happened, each with their own plausible reasoning to complicate the matter further.
While it doesn’t propose answers, The Staircase provides insight into how Kathleen’s death, and Michael’s fight for freedom, affected the family at large.
