Landscapers Hero Image

Everything you need to know about black comedy crime drama, Landscapers

Mild-mannered husband and wife Susan (Colman) and Christopher Edwards (Thewlis) have been on the run from reality for over 15 years.

When Christopher makes a startling call home to his step-mother, their role in a terrible crime that remained undiscovered for over a decade begins to emerge into the light. As their relationship is subjected to the glare of a full police investigation, the devoted couple are separated for the first time in their marriage.

As the investigation moves forward, inspired by Susan’s obsession with old Westerns and classic cinema, the fantasists cast themselves as Hollywood heroes in narratives of their own invention.

Powered by Susan’s extraordinary imagination, Susan and Chris’s fantasy world provides a much-needed sanctuary from real-world horrors and their own clawing guilt, but also threatens to undo them completely.

In its visually bold and unique style, Landscapers pivots through various perspectives from Susan and Chris, to the police officers and lawyers involved in the investigation. Exploring the idea of multiple truths, Landscapers asks just how far are you prepared to go for the one you love?

The limited series runs for four, hour-long episodes.

Is Landscapers based on a true story?

Landscapers is loosely based on the real murders of William and Patricia Wycherley, who were shot and killed in their home in a suburb of Mansfield, England, during the May day bank holiday in 1998.

Susan and her husband, Christopher Edwards, were convicted of the killings, however they maintain that Patricia shot William first, before they shot her. Christopher buried their bodies in the back garden.

In the years that followed, Susan fraudulently opened a bank account in her and her parents' names, funnelling their savings and pensions into it. With the money, the pair funded their lifestyle which included collecting film memorabilia and signed photographs of actor Gary Cooper.

They were eventually caught in 2013, 15 years after the murders, and a year after the Department for Work and Pensions requested an assessment of William. The pair fled to France, but had later messaged Christopher’s parents asking for money and help, revealing what had happened. Christopher’s mother phoned the police, and the bodies were discovered in October 2013.

They were convicted of the killings in 2014, with the jury dismissing Christopher and Susan’s claims of provocation. They were sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years. Subsequent applications for appeal have been denied.
