Based on a True Story: Season 2 Guide Hero Image

Three months after the cliffhanger finale of season one, Based on a True Story picks up with Ava and Nathan adjusting to life as new parents.

With new priorities in life, the pair aim to put their true crime obsession behind them, and live a more simple domesticated life.

While it’s far from ideal that serial killer Matt is now dating Ava’s younger sister, he seems to at least be sticking to his word and no longer moonlighting as the West Side Ripper.

However, there’s someone around who just doesn’t want to let their quiet life happen, and when a new series of murders occur, the pair can’t resist snooping.

Is Matt behind the killings or is there a copycat in their midst? And how long will it be until danger turns up on their front door?

Season Two: Episode Recap

Based on a True Story season two is made up of eight episodes, and picks up in the aftermath of the season one finale.

Most importantly, it picks up on a major development in their life: their new baby son, who happened to arrive just as their parents were cleaning up the blood of their friend.

So how did they get out of that mess and what happens next? Well, we’re about to find out.

Here’s how the episodes break down.

Episode 1: Liquid Gold

Ava and Nathan are settling into life as new parents as best they can – which is to say, not actually that well at all. Especially Ava, who is struggling to breastfeed baby Jack.

With the murder of Ruby still weighing heavy on their minds, Simon has been pinned for the crime with the help of Matt, who has since skipped town and gone to Mexico.

However, the new parents are caught off-guard when they realise that Tory is at this “health retreat” with him, prompting them to spring into action to protect her.

But as Nathan heads to check on Tory, new revelations come to light which shakes up everything the couple think they know.

Episode 2: Control F for Murder

Matt and Tory’s return from Mexico comes with a surprise announcement that doesn’t best please Ava and Nathan.

Determined to stay ‘sober’, Matt recruits Nathan as his sponsor, though keeping him on the straight and narrow is easier said than done.

Ava goes on a mission to make new friends, and finds one in the shape of a fellow new mother.

Episode 3: Relapse

News is reporting that the Westside Ripper is back – only problem is Matt is insisting that it wasn’t him this time.

With Ava’s true crime love now rekindled, she starts her own investigation into who the new killer could be, and to her surprise comes up with a break in the case.

Meanwhile, Matt comforts Nathan after his ego is bruised, pushing him to make a risky decision without Ava’s knowledge.

Episode 4: Y’all Ready For This

After a dry spell in their marriage, Ava and Nathan try to put some spice back into their marriage.

Conveniently, it comes at a time when Ava’s investigation results in them trying to scope out new leads at a covert sex party.

Meanwhile, Matt continues to go to AA, but becomes disillusioned with his progress as he’s called out on how committed he is to staying “sober”.

A break in the case comes as the killer claims a new victim.

Episode 5: Double Fault

Ava finds a new outlet for her true crime obsession – a TikTok account where she calls herself ‘Murder Bunny’, which goes viral after her prediction proves correct.

But when the killer delivers her a Zodiac-style cipher, she has a race against the clock to figure it out before it’s too late, and has to call in reinforcements.

Meanwhile Nathan prepares for a rematch with the player that ended his career, but it doesn’t quite go the way he planned.

Episode 6: Based on a Drew Story

Some new truths come to light that hit a little close to home as Ava and Nathan continue their mission to track down the copycat killer.

Matt and Tory come up with a last-minute plan that could change their lives forever.

A new body hits the floor.

Episode 7: Shotgun Wedding

A wedding gets an unwelcome guest demanding some answers, pushing everyone to breaking point.

As Ava, Nathan, Tory and Matt scramble to get things back to some kind of normality, their connection is on the brink of being ruined forever.

Things go from bad to worse when Ava makes a grave mistake on her Murder Bunny TikTok, prompting them to run.

But the copycat killer isn’t far behind – and it’s time for the big reveal.

Episode 8: This Week’s Guest

The killer has revealed themselves and they have some big plans for Ava and Nathan.

As Tory and Matt plan their escape, will they realise the pair are in danger? And what will they do with that information if they do?

This can only end one way, sooner or later.
