There’s nothing that grips the world quite like true crime, and in Based on a True Story, we see how far one couple is prepared to go to become an overnight sensation.

From the outside, married couple Ava and Nathan look like they have the perfect life in California. Ava works as a realtor, selling houses to multi-millionaires, while Nathan, once a prominent tennis ace, now works as a trainer at a fancy country club after an injury ground his career to a halt.

With a baby on the way, the pair are just… ticking on. Enjoying nights of wine in the garden with their pals as life goes on. And they’re bored, with Ava spending her days listening to true crime podcasts to hide away from their financial troubles.

But when Ava comes to the realisation that their handsome and charismatic plumber, Matt, is actually the Westside Ripper – a serial killer terrorising their area – she comes up with a plan: create her own true crime podcast, with Matt as the star.

However, it turns out getting Matt to confess, and even join in their plan, is a lot easier said than done, and soon the pair find their situation spiralling out of control as they wade into the competitive world of podcasting, and make a deal with the devil in order to get the success they crave.
