Everything you need to know about Upright
Upright is a dark comedy road-trip about two oddly matched but equally lost people as they make their way across Australia.
The series follows Lucky, a struggling musician as he drives his mother’s upright piano on the back of his truck through the Australian outback to Perth.
But his life takes a detour when he gets into a car accident with 16-year-old Meg, breaking her arm.
As she convinces him to let her tag along for the ride, the pair set off on a mission across the desert, running into trouble as he tries to make it home to his estranged family.
On the way, they learn a bit more about each other, their views on the world, and the secrets they’re running from as they form a unique and undeniable bond.
First released in November 2019, Upright returned for season two in 2022, with Meg recruiting Lucky to help track down her mother.
Who stars in Upright?
Both seasons of Upright centres on two main characters – Lucky and Meg.
Tim Minchin (Jesus Christ Superstar, stand-up comedian) plays Lachlan ‘Lucky’ Flynn, a former rock star and promising musician whose life derailed and now lives as an emotionally stunted lone wolf. Minchin also is a co-writer on the series, and is most famed for his stand-up comedy which incorporates music. He also created the songs for Matilda: The Musical.
Milly Alcock (House Of The Dragon, Reckoning) plays Megan ‘Meg’ Adams, a feisty teenage runaway with a smart mouth who strikes a deal with Lucky to drive her across the country. Milly Alcock is now best known for playing the young Rhaenyra Targaryen on House Of The Dragon.

Tim Minchin, co-creator and star of Upright, has since confirmed there are no plans for a season three.
Speaking on Mumbrella’s The Plug podcast in 2024, Minchin explained: “I think the story is done.
“Milly doesn’t need to go back and play Meg again. I mean, sometimes I think, imagine… if we jumped 10 years, just like we jumped four years between the first season, and said we did real time jumps… I suspect it’s let it be.
“I just absolutely loved it, and Milly’s off on a different journey now.”
