Episode 1: The Western Book of the Dead
Detective Ray Velcoro – the Police Detective in the fictional town of Vinci in California – drops his son Chad to school. Later, we see him being interviewed by a lawyer about his ex-wife, who was raped nine months before Chad was born and with there being a question mark around whether Ray is Chad’s biological father. Ray refuses to take a paternity test claiming that the man who raped his ex-wife was never found. In reality, following the attack Ray reached out to criminal Frank Semyon to find out who the attacker was and subsequently was left owing Ray a favour…a favour which has since been called in.
Vinci is part of a new development for a high-speed rail line, which is set to bring in significant money for business in the area. Frank is working on the deal and needs the city manager to move things along so he can secure a deal with Russian criminal and businessman Osip Agronov. Ben Caspere, the city manager, is operating as the middleman for Frank and is set to present his plans imminently. Elsewhere, Ani Bezzerides – Ventura County Detective – leads a police raid on a suspected illegal brothel which turns out to be a webcam business. Ani’s shocked to discover that her sister, Athena, is one of the cam girls. Later Ani is asked by a woman who she’s serving an eviction notice to if she can help find her missing sister. The missing girl, Vera, had recently started a new job so Ani heads to the meditation centre where she had been employed to find out more. Ani’s father, Eliot, is running said meditation centre and confirms that Vera did use to work there but no longer does. Presentation day rolls around and Ben Caspere – the city manager who is due to present the plans – is missing. Ray is put on the case and heads to Ben’s house with Detective Teague Dixon where they find evidence to suggest Ben has been kidnapped.
Across the city, Office Paul Woodrugh who is part of the California Highway Patrol pulls a speeding driver over. The driver, actress Lacey Lindel, offers him a sexual favour in an attempt to avoid a ticket. He declines the offer and hands her a ticket but Lacey later files a complaint against him, accusing him of sexual misconduct. The complaint gains traction on social media due to her celebrity status and Paul is put on paid leave whist the case is looked into. He heads home to his girlfriend Emily, where we learn that Paul is an Army veteran who had previously worked with a private security firm - Black Mountain. A local newspaper begins reporting on corruption going on in Vinci, so Frank orders Ray to go and beat up the staff writer to stop him reporting on the corruption and to steal whatever evidence the journalist has.
Ray heads to the school to pick up Chad and spots that he’s not wearing the shoes he went to school in. Chad shares that he’s being bullied by a classmate, Aspen Conroy, who broke into his locker and ruined his shoes. Using his police contacts, Ray gets Aspen’s address and pays him a visit where he warns him against bullying Chad and attacks his father. Ray then heads to meet with Frank to hand over the evidence he found. He learns that Frank is the person who sent the lawyer to help him gain custody of Chad. Detective Paul Woodrough is asked about the scars on his back by his girlfriend Emily. To avoid the conversation, he heads out on his motorbike for a night-time ride – sans helmet – before turning off his headlights and speeding up. Suddenly he turns his headlights on and loses control, before skidding off and ending up on the side of the road. Paul notices a man sitting on a bench nearby and as he gets closer he realises the person is dead and their eyes are burned out. The police arrive on scene and Paul identifies the man as missing city manager, Ben Caspere.
Ani arrives to the scene because the location where the body was found falls within her jurisdiction and Ray also attends because he is assigned to the missing case of Ben.
Episode 2: Night Finds You
The California State Attorney and Katherine Davis discuss the murder with a number of other key figures, eventually coming to an agreement that they’ll join efforts across the different departments. Ani is told to keep an eye on Ray as there are suspicions that he’s corrupt. Ray is instructed by Mayor Austin, the Police Chief and Lieutenant Kevin Burris to investigate the case – with the support of Detective Teague Dixon.
Ray, Paul and Ani head to the post-mortem where they learn that Ben was tortured and shot in the genitals. Ray passes this information on to Frank, who reveals that he had been working with Ben but offers no details about what this ‘work’ entailed. The news of Ben’s death worries Frank as Ben had been his middleman, acting as a ‘bank’ for him, and his death meaning Frank has now lost a significant amount of money.
Ani and Ray begin investigating and speak to people who knew Ben. But unbeknownst to Ani, the people they’re interviewing are the individuals who tasked Ray with keeping their dealings with getting legislation passed quiet. Paul updates Ray and Ani on his recent findings – Ben had been making monthly withdrawals of $1000. They also find out that he’d been leaving the city most weekends. Ray heads to meet Chad but instead finds his ex-wife, Gena, who is there to confront him about beating up Aspen Conroy’s father. Gena tells Ray that she’s going to fight for sole custody of Chad and if he tries to block this, she’ll request a paternity test.
Ray and Ani pay Ben’s psychiatrist a visit, where they discover he had a penchant for young women and often spent time with sex workers. On their way out, the psychiatrist – Dr Irving – recognises Ani’s last name and shares that he knows of her father and his meditation centre.
Frank visits Mayor Austin Chessani to find out more information about Ben’s murder but ends up learning nothing. Paul heads back to his apartment after visiting with his mother, Cynthia, and is confronted by his girlfriend who is asking lots of questions about his past. After refusing to talk about anything, Emily ends their relationship.
Frank goes to a strip club to try and find out more about Ben. A sex worker there tells him that Ben had a place in Hollywood where he’d take girls. Frank passes this information to Ray, telling him to go to the Hollywood house and take any information he can find that points to Ben’s role embezzling money for Frank. He promises that if Ray pulls this off he’ll snag him a promotion at work but Ray isn’t interested, making it clear he wants their arrangement to end. Despite his hesitation, Ray heads to the address in Hollywood and inside he finds music playing, a hard drive, blood on the floor and a camera. Suddenly, Ray is shot twice by an individual wearing a bird mask.

Episode 3: Maybe Tomorrow
The episode begins with Ray deep in a dream, where a man is singing. Ray wakes up to find that he has no serious wounds because the gun had been loaded with rubber rounds. Ani arrives and scolds Ray for going off on his own and not keeping her in the loop. The police examine the scene and find that the camera and hard drive Ray spotted the night before has gone.
The pressure at work is starting to get to Frank and his sex life with his wife is suffering as a result. Ray meets with Frank to confront him about what happened at the house, believing his was set up given that Frank gave him the address and told him to go there. But even Frank is unaware of what’s going on.
Ben’s phone records lead Ani and Paul to Mayor Austin’s mansion, where they hope to find a connection between him and Ben. There they meet his drunk trophy wife and his hostile son, Tony, but both prove unhelpful. Later, Mayor Austin finds out about their visit to his home and threatens to have the pair kicked off the case.
Frank visits Russian businessman, Osip, who tells him he’s leaving for Vegas. This leads Frank to suspect that Osip might have had a hand in Ben’s death. Paul meets up with Miguel, an old friend from his time working for the Black Mountain security firm. Miguel brings up their past relationship to which Paul reacts badly and punches him. Unbeknownst to them, Detective Dixon has seen this and taken a picture.
Back to the investigation and they’ve managed to find a possible lead after tracing a car that might have dropped Ben to the rest stop. Ani and Ray head to a film set where a car, matching the description of the one they traced, was reported missing just one week before Ben was killed. Later that day, Ani and Ray are enjoying a nightcap at his house when Gena arrives to say she’s been interviewed by police about Ray being corrupt. Gena offers Ray money to walk away and stop fighting for custody – an offer he turns down.
Whilst at a strip club investigating a potential lead, Paul bumps into Frank. Frank is there to confront Santos for his lack of support, beating him up and removing his flashy gold teeth. After receiving a tip off, Ani and Ray speak to someone who had been working on the film set. But whilst there the car in question is set on fire, with Ray and Ani embarking on a chase to try catch the perpetrator. The chase ends with Ray saving Ani from being hit by a truck and the individual escaping.
Episode 4: Down Will Come
Frank and Jordan discuss their difficulties to conceive, with Jordan suggesting adoption – something which Frank shuts down immediately, remaining firm with his desire to have a biological child. Paul has spent the night with his former lover, Miguel. Upon leaving his apartment he discovers his bike has been stolen and that reporters are outside, waiting to ask him questions about Lacey Lindel. Frank sets about rebuilding his empire by visiting old properties he used to own. Ray and Ani speak with Mayor Austin’s daughter, Betty, to see if she has any information to offer about Ben. During their conversation, Betty reveals her birth mother hung herself when Betty was a young child and that her mother had been under the care of Dr. Pitlor at the time of her suicide.
Paul and Emily meet to speak about their issues and Emily reveals she’s pregnant. A shocked Paul tells Emily he loves her and suggests they get married. Ray and Ani visit her father to see if he has any information that can help their case. He shows them photos which leads them to land that has been contaminated after decades of toxic materials being dumped in the area.
A sexual misconduct case is lodged against Ani by a colleague who she slept with and she’s placed on departmental leave. Back at the investigation office, Paul is presenting a new lead to the team. He’s discovered that Ledo Amarilla, is the pimp who got a sex worker to pawn some of Ben’s possessions. Ray, Ani, Paul and a backup team meet outside Amarilla’s warehouse ready to raid the property but before they can enter they’re spotted by his men who open fire. A gunfight ensues and the bullets cause the building – which turns out to be a drug lab - to explode. Amarilla manages to escape from the building in his car, running over innocent people before crashing into a bus. Another shootout ensues, with numerous people killed and Amarilla dead. The final scene shows the aftermath of the raid, where numerous officers, bystanders and gang members are dead.

Episode 5: Other Lives
We pick up two months after the shootout – something which is now being referred to in media as the ‘Vinci Massacre’. Attorney General Geldof closed Ben’s murder case, believing his death was connected with Amarilla’s dealings, and announced his running for Governor. We learn that Ray has since quit his job and is now working for a Frank as part of his private security team.
Ani is having to attend sexual harassment workshops and working at the evidence lock-up. Paul – now a detective – is attempting to settle his case with Lacey Lindel. Ray is still in the midst of a custody battle with his ex-wife and Gena is fighting dirty by requesting a paternity test. But the ongoing custody fight means he needs more money, so Ray turns to Frank asking for more work. Frank sets him the task of keeping an eye on Blake, his second-in-command who he’s grown suspicious of.
Paul visits his mother and is angry when he finds out that she’s spent the money he had saved from his time in Afghanistan. Cynthia argues back revealing she knows about him sleeping with men, to which Paul walks out. That night Ray is tailing Blake and follows him to Dr Pitlor’s house where he – with the help of Tony Chessani – collects some girls before dropping them off to Osip. Elsewhere, Jordan confronts Frank about his business dealings.
Ani decides to look back into her old case of the missing girl, Vera, and in doing so finds a link between Vera and the blue diamonds found in Ben’s safe. She meets with Ray to ask for his help but he warns her to leave it alone, given that neither are working as detectives anymore. Later, Katherine Davis meets with Ray, Ani and Paul and reveals she’s starting a covert operation and re-opening Ben’s case because she believes Attorney General Geldof is colluding with Mayor Austin Chessani in his bid for Governor. Ray is initially hesitant to get involved until she promises to help him win his custody case. During their conversation, Katherine reveals that Gena’s rapist was caught a few weeks ago. This revelation leads Ray to believe that Frank set him up all those years ago and has been lying to him ever since.
Ray pays Dr Pitlor a visit, attacking him to try and force him to share information about his dealings with Chessani and the now dead, Ben. Dr Pitlor confesses to his involvement, revealing that Tony is the facilitator and responsible for the girls at the parties. Said parties being a way to gather blackmail information on rich, powerful individuals.
Ani asks her sister Athena for help to get into one of the parties. Across town, Paul is meeting with various diamond owners to find out more about the blue diamonds they found in Ben’s locker. One owner believes that the diamonds could be stolen and shares that Detective Dixon had already visited to ask about the diamonds.
Ani and Paul head to a house where Vera had reportedly placed a call from. They spot a nearby shed where they find evidence which suggests the space was used for torture. Frank and Jordan are working at improving their relationship and spending time together when they’re interrupted by a knock at the door…Ray.
Episode 6: Church in Ruins
Picking up where the previous episode left off, Frank and Ray sit down to talk with their guns drawn underneath the kitchen table. Ray confronts Frank about what he’s recently learnt…that the person he killed all those years ago, wasn’t Gena’s rapist. Given that Frank has been using this murder as leverage over Ray, it’s understandable that he’s angry. But Frank denies knowingly giving Ray information, claiming he thought the intel was solid. Ray asks for the name of the person who tipped Frank off and Frank gives Ray an out, releasing him from having to do his dirty work any longer. Before leaving, Ray gives an update on the investigation with Frank realising they’re both after the same person – a woman called Irina.
The police are at the shed that Ani and Paul found, securing the scene. The local sheriff takes over leaving Paul to focus on the diamonds with Ani tasked with working the girls angle. Paul discovers that the diamonds were stolen years ago during a murder and robbery, during which a couple were killed leaving two children parent-less.
Ray visits his ex-wife’s rapist in prison and after he confirms that he did rape Gena, Ray promises to kill him. Elsewhere, Ani’s sister gets her access to the next party.
Frank and Jordan visit Stan’s – one of Frank’s henchmen who was killed a few episodes back – wife to offer financial support to her and her son. Ray has a supervised visit with Chad, during which Ray reassures Chad of his love for him. After Chad leaves, Ray gets drunk before calling Gena to make a deal. He won’t contest custody if she promises not to do the paternity test – which Gena agrees to. Frank tortures a Mexican gang member to get information on how to find the cartel. Frank heads to the location he was given where he makes a deal with the cartel. If they help him find Irina, Frank will let them push drugs through his clubs for a year. Later, Frank receives a call from Irina who tells him that she stole Ben’s possessions because she was hired by someone to do so. Reluctantly she agrees to meet with Frank.
Ray, Ani and Paul regroup and Ani tells them her sister has got her an in to the next party. Ray and Paul agree to tail her and watch from a distance, ready to jump in if she needs help. Dressed to the nines, Ani makes the cut and is ushered onto a bus which will transport her and the other girls to the location of the party.
Ray and Paul tail the bus to the house and begin securing the perimeter. Ani arrives at the party and is given drugs to take before she’s allowed in. Frank heads to the location to meet with Irina but to his surprise the cartel arrive and he discovers they’ve killed Irina because she had been working with the police.
Inside the party, Ani walks through the house which is full of wealthy, powerful men and a bunch of women. Before long the drugs begin kicking in and Ani starts hallucinating, just as she’s approached by an older man who begins to lead her away. Whilst securing the premises, Paul overhears Osip and Jacob McCandless discussing some work they’ve been doing together with Jacob mentioning the Vinci rail project. Paul waits until they leave the room before breaking in and taking documents he finds there.
Ani’s hallucinations become more vivid, with memories from her childhood causing her to throw up the drugs in the bathroom. As she’s coming to, she spots Vera slumped over in the bathroom and grabs her to take her out of the house. On their way out, men start grabbing at the two of them so Ani stabs them, killing a guard in the process. Luckily Paul finds Ani and Vera just in time and all four jump in the car, whilst guards fire bullets at them. In the car, Paul updates them on the documents he found which suggest there’s a much wider conspiracy at play when it comes to the rail project.

Episode 7: Black Maps and Motel Rooms
Paul, Ani, Ray and Vera head to a motel to hide out, having narrowly escaped from the party. Ani – traumatised from what happened – tries it on with Ray, who turns her down. Ray and Paul read through the documents they took from the party and find a connection between Catalast – the company behind the rail deal – Jacob and Osip. During this, Paul is sent pictures of him with Miguel by an anonymous number.
Paul sends Emily and his mother out of the area, to somewhere safe with Ani does the same for Athena and Eliot. Ray meets Frank to share what they discovered at the party, revealing Osip’s connection with the rail project. Frank reveals that Irina is dead but that she had been in contact with a police officer prior to this. Ani quizzes Vera about the blue diamonds and shows her some photographs, with Vera revealing that Tasha was Ben’s favourite girl but that she had been trying to blackmail him which is why she was taken to the torture shed. Vera also confesses that she was never missing, she enjoyed the lifestyle of the parties and that she doesn’t want to go back to her sister.
Paul does some digging whilst at the police department, where he discovers that there’s a warrant out for Ani’s arrest after she stabbed the security guard. Frank armed with the information from Ray, beats up Blake and gets him to confess to conspiring with Osip and Tony, and killing Stan. He also reveals that Osip and McCandless have an upcoming meet. Ray heads to meet with Katherine Davis to update her on the progress of the case but instead, finds her dead in her car.
Frank is planning to escape to Venezuela with Jordan - arranging flights, new passports, weapons and money. Paul, Ani and Ray regroup in the motel and decide Ben’s case dates back to the 1992 riots when Lieutenant Burris, Police Chief Holloway, Detective Dixon and Ben worked together to steal the diamonds.
Frank meets Mayor Austin to tell him his son, Tony, has been working with Osip and McCandless. Shortly after Mayor Austin leaves, Osip arrives to tell Frank he’s buying the casino and that he wants Frank to work for him. Frank plays along, agreeing to manage the day-to-day of the casino. Later that evening, Frank fakes a safety issue to get everyone to leave the casino before burning it, along with some of his other clubs, down.
Paul gets another text from the anonymous sender asking to meet. When he arrives he sees Miguel waiting for him and discovers he’s been lured there under orders from the new security firm he’s been working for. They head inside to some tunnels, where Police Chief Holloway is waiting. He asks for the documents that Paul took from the party back, so, Paul pretends to call Ray to set up a meet before using this as an opportunity to escape. Paul makes his way out of the tunnels, even using Miguel as a human shield, but as he heads outside he’s shot dead by Lieutenant Burris.
Ray and Ani are still at the motel working through theories whilst bonding over their troubled pasts.
Episode 8: Omega Station
Ray and Ani sleep together before discussing their childhoods whilst in bed. Ani shares that she was molested by a stranger when she was a child and Ray reveals how he killed a man who he thought was Gena’s rapist.
Frank tells Jordan she needs to go to Venezuela with Nails. When Jordan refuses to go without him, he tries to break up with her. Again, she isn’t having any of it so, after Frank promises to join her in two weeks’ time, she agrees to go.
Ray calls Paul’s phone and Lieutenant Burris answers, telling him that Paul is dead. Burris suggests the pair meet but Ray knows that if he does so, he’ll be held responsible for Paul’s death. Determined to close the case for Paul, Ray realises that Lenny, the set photographer, and Laura, Ben’s assistant, are the two kids that were orphaned as a result of the diamond robbery all those years back.
Frank heads to Mayor Austin’s house where he finds him floating dead in his swimming pool. Inside the house he finds Mayor Austin’s wife, who reveals she was introduced to him by his son Tony.
Ray and Ani visit Laura and Lenny’s house, where they find a bird mask, weapons and pictures of police offers hung up. In the living room they find Laura handcuffed to the fireplace. She tells them the story of what happened after her parents died and how she began working the streets at sixteen, which is where she met Tony. She reveals that Lenny killed Ben and that he’s planning to meet with Police Chief Holloway to trade the hard drive for money. Ani drops Laura to a bus stop, encouraging her to get out of California and start a new life.
Frank calls Osip and threatens him, severing their relationship, before going into hiding with the help of Felicia.
Ray arrives at the train station where he finds Lenny. He reveals that he knows everything that Lenny is planning and tries to talk him out of it. As Holloway arrives for the meet, Ray calls him over to a nearby bench – where Lenny is sitting right behind them. Ray tells Holloway he has the hard drive and asks for the blue diamonds. Ray, wearing a wire, manages to get Holloway to confess to his role in the death of Amarillo and that he was working for Tony. When explaining why they had to go to such lengths to get the diamonds, Holloway reveals that Ben was Laura’s biological father – prompting Lenny to fly into a fit of rage and stab him. A gunfight ensues, during which an injured Holloway pulls his gun out and shoots Lenny dead.
Having fallen to the floor during the gunfight, Ray reaches for the wire but is too late as it’s crushed as people rush out of the train station. The whole conversation, where Holloway revealed the true extent of his involvement, is now gone. Ani, having arrived when the shooting began, grabs Ray and the pair escape. Burris, who had been there as back up for Holloway, also makes his escape.
With nowhere else to go, Ray and Ani join Frank in his hideout. Frank asks Ani to go to Venezuela to pass on a message to Jordan. Frank enlists Ray on a revenge mission and they begin plotting to crash a Catalast meeting that’s taking place in the woods. They reach the building and shoot dead everyone inside – Osip and McCandless included – before taking off with millions of dollars in cash. They split the money and agree to meet back up in Venezuela. Back in Vinci, Ani heads to Dr Pitlor’s office where she finds him dead.
Ray heads to Chad’s school, standing outside in the hopes of trying to spot him in the playground. He spots Chad in the distance and sees him with his police badge, before Chad notices him and they share a salute. Arriving back at his car, Ray notices a tracker has been attached to the bottom. Unable to remove it, he leaves this on and drives off – with an SUV seen following him.
Having just picked up some diamonds which he planned to use to finance his life in Venezuela, Frank is stopped by the Mexican cartel and driven to the desert. Ray, knowing that he’s being followed and believing his life is over, tells Ani to get on the boat to Venezuela and that he’ll meet her there. Unconvinced that she’ll do as he says he speaks to Felicia and tells her to make sure Ani leaves.
In the desert, the cartel confronts Frank about his clubs being burnt down and how this now means they have nowhere to push their drugs. He offers them the $1 million he has in his suitcase to make up for the lost revenue. Almost in the clear it all goes wrong when a cartel member asks for Frank’s suit. He responds with a punch as he’s not prepared to hand over his suit which contains the diamonds worth a significant amount of money. This move proves fatal and Frank is stabbed before being left in the middle of the desert, bleeding out.
Ray – believing his life is coming to an end - leaves a voicemail for Chad but the lack of signal in the woods means it never sends. He decides to make a run for it, ditching the car and heading into the woods with Lieutenant Burris and his men following close behind. Elsewhere, Ani boards the boat. Frank begins experiencing hallucinations of his abusive father before Jordan appears telling him to turn around. Seeing his dead body on the ground, Frank accepts his fate and falls to the floor. Ray begins shooting at Burris’s men, managing to kill some before he himself is shot dead.
Some time later, we see Eddie watching the TV where there’s a news report covering Ray’s death. Gena gets the results of the paternity test which confirm that Ray was Chad’s father. In California, Paul gets a highway named after him and Cynthia, Emily and her baby attend the grand unveiling. Tony Chessani becomes Mayor and the Californian rail plan goes ahead.
In Venezuela, Ani speaks with Dan Hoswer – the staff writer who Ray beat up at the beginning of the series –giving him all the evidence he needs to bring to light what really went on. Despite his pleas, she refuses to testify and leaves to meet Jordan who had been looking after her baby whilst she spoke with Dan. Together with Nails they all head outside and disappear into the crowd.
