At the Toledo Truth Teller, the paper is only as strong as its journalists… so Ned Sampson has a fight on his hands as The Paper kicks off.
But with a full heart and a positive attitude, it seems he’s willing to make the impossible possible, and with a group of lovable wannabe reporters in the making, the world (well… this city in Ohio) could be his oyster.
Here are the key people you need to know, and who plays them.
Ned Sampson
Played by: Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient, Ex Machina)
Ned is the sparky new recruit of the Toledo Truth Teller, and a huge romanticist. He believes his journalism will save the world. Previously, he worked in cardboard and gift packaging. As Editor in Chief, he is keen to leave his mark on the TTT.
Esmerelda Grand
Played by: Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus, G20)
Esmerelda is the managing editor of the Toledo Truth Teller, and also in charge of TTT Online, which she insists is ‘sexier than the print version’. She was once a contestant on Married at First Sight but is now a single mother. She is not happy about having a new boss.
Mare Pritti
Played by: Chelsea Frei (The Moodys, The Cleaning Lady)
Mare is the paper’s compositor, meaning she’s in charge of the newspaper layout. She used to be in the army and wrote for the military paper, Stars and Stripes. Friendly and warm, she quickly befriends Ned and has a real passion for journalism.
Detrick Moore
Played by: Melvin Gregg (Nine Perfect Strangers, The Blackening)
Detrick is in advertising for the TTT. While he’s not supposed to interact with the editorial team, he likes to be liked, tries to keep spirits up, and is generally friendly to everyone he passes. So when he’s given the opportunity to be a reporter, he jumps at it, even if journalism doesn’t come naturally to him.
Adelola Olofin
Played by: Gbemisola Ikumelo (Brain In Gear, A League of Their Own)
Adelola is one of the three accountants on the team. She works underneath Oscar but joins the reporting team out of pure interest. She likes to think she’s cool and doesn’t suffer fools – but proves gullible when it comes to hunting stories.
Adam Cooper
Played by: Alex Edelman (Teenage Bounty Hunters, Unfrosted)
Adam is the secondary accountant, and a married man with four kids, though can still be a little childlike (especially his lunches, which he has in a lunch box that his wife gives him). He feels like he could make a good journalist.
Nicole Lee
Played by: Ramona Young (Man Seeking Woman, Never Have I Ever)
Nicole works on TTT Online but has no interest in being part of the documentary. She’s in charge of circulation and data management. She is often pushed around, particularly by Esmerelda, but has a natural skill when it comes to knowing where to look for stories.
Ken Davies
Played by: Tim Key (The Ballad of Wallis Island, Mickey 17)
Ken is the business strategist for Enervate, the company that owns the TTT. He is the middleman for the company who likes to make himself known – and is all about making sure the budget is as low as possible. If there’s a cost-cutting scheme available, he’ll take it.
Oscar Martinez
Played by: Oscar Nuñez (The Office US, The Proposal)
Oscar is the head accountant at the TTT – having moved there from Pennsylvania, where he worked at Dunder Mifflin. He is less than pleased to find cameras back in his life but quickly becomes tempted by the idea of becoming a reporter.
