What is Sinners about?
Set in 1932, identical twins Elijah and Elias Moore (known to most as Smoke and Stack) return to their home in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
After serving in World War I, the pair made a reputation for themselves as gangsters in Chicago. Returning to the Jim Crow South, the pair purchase a sawmill, looking to start a juke joint for the local Black community.
While there, they reconnect with their younger cousin, Sammie, who has dreams of becoming a blues singer despite his pastor father thinking it sinful.
However, on the opening night, their venture runs into several obstacles, including people from their past – including Stack’s white-passing ex-girlfriend Mary, whom he abandoned –the local Klan, and most terrifying of all, an unearthly presence that is apparently drawn to Sammie’s music.
Created by filmmaker Ryan Coogler, whose work includes directing Black Panther, Creed and Fruitvale Station, Sinners was released in April 2025 and became an international success.
To date (February 2026), the film has grossed over $360million and was made on a $90million budget.
