Sharon Rooney stars in this teenage drama series as a fictional version of writer Rae Earl, whose personal diaries and book `My Fat Mad Teenage Diary' serve as the basis of the show. The 16-year-old Rae, who has a lust for life and love, struggles with body image and mental-health issues. Recently released after spending four months in a psychiatric hospital, Rae wants to find love but fears that, at 16 stone, she is too big for the world. Shortly after returning to the `outside world', Rae meets up with old friend Chloe and starts hanging out with her and her new group of friends, which include fit Finn, lust interest Archie and joker Chop. On the homefront, Rae discovers that her mum is living with a new boyfriend, an illegal Tunisian immigrant who is being hidden from the neighbours.
