Mindhunter is a psychological crime drama loosely based on the 1995 non-fiction book of the same name by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

The series follows the founding of the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit during the late 1970s, and is based on the real experiences of author Douglas, a former FBI researcher, as well as real events – though personal lives are fabricated for the story.

Mindhunter follows agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench (fictionalised version of Douglas and former co-worker Robert Ressler) joining forces with psychologist Wendy Carr for a new project where they interview serial killers to establish any common links, warning signs or behaviours in order to help solve ongoing cases.

Their work will later become the basis of criminal profiling, which is now commonly used within the bureau.

In their years-long research, the team operates out of the Training Division at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, starting in 1977 when serial killer Ed Kemper becomes one of the first people willing to discuss his crimes with the team.

Soon their work also includes other murderers including the BTK Killer, ‘Son of Sam’ David Berkowitz, Richard Speck and Montie Rissell.

In the years that follow, the series tracks Ford and Tench as they investigate the Atlanta Child Murders, which occurred between 1979 to 1981, using the information they learned from their research in order to track down the killer.

The series was largely directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher, whose previous work includes Se7en, Fight Club and Gone Girl.

First released in 2017, Mindhunter ran for two seasons, totalling 19 episodes. Episodes vary in length from 30minutes to an hour.

Mindhunter was widely acclaimed, with 2017’s season one earning a 96% score on RottenTomatoes, while 2019’s season two achieved the near-perfect 99%.

The official rating of Mindhunter in the UK, as noted by Netflix, is 18 for the overall series.

This means the show has been considered suitable for adults only.

Reasons for this rating include:

● Frequent use of profanity and discriminatory language

● Scenes of a sexual nature

● Graphic discussion of criminal sexual acts including incest, rape and molestation

● Graphic discussion of violent acts including murder and child murder

● Violent imagery including of murdered bodies (some children)

● Use of blood and gore

● Some nudity (not explicit)

● Violence towards animals and children

● Recreational drug use

● Other disturbing conversations considered unsuitable for younger audiences

● Depictions of suicide

● Peril and threatening incidents

● Intimidating and threatening behaviour

In 2020, the show was placed on an indefinite hold, with the cast released from their contracts in the same year.

Despite its popularity, the series was officially cancelled by Netflix in 2023. The official reason was due to a combination of its high budget and its limited appeal due to the show’s adult content.

Speaking to France’s Première Magazine, David Fincher confirmed the speculation, stating that the creative team weren’t willing to adjust the story’s needs in order to make a third season work.

He told the magazine: “We went as far as we could until someone finally said to us, 'It makes no sense to produce this series like this, unless you can reduce the budget, or make it more pop, so that more people will watch it.'

"We did not want to change our approach so, respectfully, they told us that they were drawing a line under it. That's it: I always take a slight step aside from what is expected of me. Otherwise, I'm not interested.”

As of June 2026, there are no plans to bring the show back.
