What happens in Heated Rivalry, Episode 4 ‘Rose’?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

Boston Raiders play against Montreal Metros, with Ilya goading Shane as his team take a 4-1 victory. The hockey season ends, and Ilya once again returns to Russia, enjoying nights out with Svetlana, while Shane returns home to Montreal, picking up more commercial work and working out when he’s got nothing else to do.

The pair repeat the same pattern from 2014 through to 2016 – hooking up while the season is on, sending racy texts to each other when they’re not, and keeping their secret romance hidden from everyone. Driven by Shane, the Metros raise the Stanley Cup for the first time in 16 years, and Ilya watches him celebrate proudly from his TV. They repeat their success and defend their title in the 2015-2016 season.

Their constant texting hasn’t gone unnoticed though, with Svetlana realising Ilya is becoming increasingly fixated on his phone, despite having no shortage of beautiful women throwing themselves at him. Shane is also distracted while shooting his commercials and attending family engagements.

Ahead of the 2016-2017 season, Shane spends time with teammate Hayden, now a dad-of-three with another on the way, and his family. At an outing to the aquarium, Hayden asks Shane if he ever fancies settling down and having kids himself, and Shane declines his offer to set him up with a friend.

As Shane holds Hayden’s baby, he’s approached by two young fans who want a picture and confuse the baby for his. The pair laugh, but Hayden later notes that they didn’t even recognise him as a Metros player, having disappeared from the spotlight to focus on being a dad.

In Boston, Ilya watches an interview with Shane on TV, which shows his luxurious lakeside home in Canada. During the chat, Shane mentions that it’s 10 minutes away from a cottage his family had when they were growing up. When Svetlana comes in the room, Ilya plays down his interest, saying he was bored, but she seems to know better, and he switches it off.

Later on, as they head to a party, Svetlana notices him on his phone again and asks if he has a girlfriend. Ilya says no but looks shocked when she mentions “Jane” – the name Shane is saved under in his phone – and notes he’s been texting “her” for years so she thought it might be serious. Ilya insists it’s not.

The next day in his hotel room, Shane tells Hayden he’s catching up with “a friend” and is caught off-guard when Hayden assumes he’s meeting “Lily” – Ilya’s fake name. While he tries to shut it down, he’s a terrible liar, but Hayden doesn’t care.

Home Life

Shane is impressed by Ilya’s plush mansion, but the pair waste no time in hooking up once again. Once they’re done, Shane says he should leave, but Ilya asks him to spend the afternoon with him. He agrees and the pair lie in bed together, before Ilya makes them food and they have their first real time together in a domestic setting.

They mainly make small talk about hockey and their upcoming season, but then the conversation turns to girls. Ilya admits to being close to Svetlana, and that they sleep together, but they have been friends for years and it’s purely casual – definitely not a girlfriend, though he’s into both women and men.

As the pair grab a bite to eat, Shane asks if he likes girls as well, which prompts Shane to say yes, but he keeps things private. Ilya receives a call from his father and takes it, disappearing into the hallway and speaking in Russian. While Shane can’t understand it, viewers see that Ilya is dealing with his father struggling with his Alzheimer’s disease, and his brother, Alexei, is meant to be looking after him. Ilya calls up Alexei and yells at him, considering he’s paying his brother to be their father’s carer.

Emotionally exhausted, Ilya gathers himself before putting on bravado to return to Shane but is caught off-guard when Shane asks if that was his father. Ilya asks when he started learning Russian, but Shane insists he only knew that word, so didn’t pick up the conversation.

The pair cuddle on the sofa, with Ilya stroking Shane’s hair, and they share an intimate moment before they start having sex again, but when Ilya calls him by his name, rather than Hollander, Shane freaks out, apologises and says he can’t do this, before quickly leaving.

Meeting Rose

Back in Montréal, Shane meets up with his parents, with his mother Yuna continuing to push for more business deals. His father notices something is wrong, and asks why he’s so tense, before encouraging him to go to London for the summer with them. Shane says they should go alone, but Yuna insists he needs to go – the trip is wrapped up in yet another commercial deal.

A few days later, Shane heads to a bar with friends, where he’s given a drink on the house by the bartender. However, he’s distracted and isn’t up for much socialising, so slips away to spend a moment alone in a booth. There he meets Rose, a famous movie star who was also seeking solitude by grabbing some fries alone in the booth.

The pair exchange pleasantries, saying they’re both fans of each other's work, before sharing fries and then drinks. Conversation flows easily between them, sharing stories about their lives, and soon it turns flirty.

The pair start dating, soon becoming Canada’s next hot power couple. This gets Ilya’s attention, with it becoming a source of gossip in the Raiders’ locker room. Rose is soon appearing at games, wearing Shane’s jersey, and they happily play it up for the cameras.

Ilya is left raging as the conversation continues to grow around him, allowing it to distract him from his training.

On Thin Ice

Shane and Ilya have a game scheduled against each other, but Rose can’t make it as she’s busy shooting. Shane agrees to meet up with her later, considers texting Ilya, but then decides against it.

The game is vicious, and Shane and Ilya are both clearly off their game. Later that night, Ilya, in need of a distraction, declares he wants to get laid, and rallies friends to go to a club for a night out.

He ends up at the same bar that Shane is meeting Rose in. As he waits at the bar, he spots Shane and Rose on the dancefloor together and looks on furiously. Shane recognises some of Ilya’s teammates and later sees him on the dancefloor kissing a woman. Upset, he excuses himself to go to the bathroom.

That night, as they go home, Shane has sex with Rose but pictures Ilya, while Ilya goes home alone for some time by himself in the shower.
