What is Futurama about?
Futurama is a sci-fi workplace animated sitcom following a dim-witted New York pizza deliveryboy Philip J. Fry, who finds himself in the future after being accidentally cryogenically frozen for 1000 years.
Waking up in “New New York” on December 31st, 2999, Fry has to navigate this whole new world, which is built on the one he left behind (and where mutants live in the sewers).
He decides to track down his last remaining relative, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, who gives him a job at his business, the delivery service Planet Express.
Among his new co-workers are Bender, a smart-mouthed alcoholic robot, Dr Zoidberg, a crab-like “human expert” and physician, Amy, the ditzy intern from a wealthy family, and Hermes, the company’s Jamaican accountant.
But it’s Leela, a one-eyed mutant and the ship’s captain that he grows close to, eventually forming a romantic connection.
Through their intergalactic adventures, Fry and the crew have seen it all. Floating brains set on world domination; ex-presidents' heads floating in jars; tentacles that are actually genticles; even the end of the universe... Twice. And to top it all off, it turns out Fry is his own grandfather! I'll shut up and take your money now.
Futurama was made by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and first premiered in 1999 on US Network, Fox.
It was cancelled in 2003, only to be rebooted in 2009 by Comedy Central, where it remained until 2013, where it was once again brought to a conclusion.
But Good News, Everyone! In 2023, Futurama was given a new lease of life on Hulu, which is now part of Disney+ in the UK. The new season of the series will air from August 3rd, 2026.
