Warning: Major spoilers ahead

At the end of episode seven, Rue was in danger once again, as Faye raised the alarm after their attempted raid on Wayne’s safe, which wasn’t holding the cash they suspected, but a string of IDs from missing girls.

Maybe she should have heeded Ali’s warning to stay away from Laurie’s compound, especially with the DEA raid planned to take down Laurie and Alamo’s teams.

Elsewhere Maddy and Cassie attempted to save Nate, who was buried alive and ransomed by the Armenian gangsters he was in debt to. Sadly, they are too late. They retrieve his coffin to find he has succumbed to a rattlesnake bite. Now, Cassie is a widow, and Maddy is $1million on the hook to Alamo, who she’d recruited to resolve this problem.

Jules has broken things off with Rue – perhaps permanently, this time - while Lexi is still fighting to impress her boss at LA Nights… with so many things up in the air, there was a lot of ground to cover before the show took its final bow.

Here’s what happened to each of the characters as the season reached its climax.

Sadly, Rue didn’t make it out of the world of Euphoria alive.

With luck on her side, Rue was able to overpower Wayne and Fay and make her escape from the compound. At one point she was lassoed by Harley, and was dragged through the desert on horseback, but G – who was keeping lookout for her outside – saved her and got her out of there.

When Rue and G got back to Alamo, he gave her a jar of Percocet – a potent prescription painkiller containing oxycodone - and told her to rest up after a job well done. He knew this was a drug that Rue was previously addicted to but said he trusted her not to abuse them.

However, Alamo very much knew Rue, already an addict and now banged up and bruised after her ordeal at the compound, would take them. He had not forgotten what Maddy had let slip in the previous episode, and no one crosses Alamo.

In the morning, Rue watches a news report showing her friend Fez using parkour to escape prison. She rushes off to find him.

On her way she thinks of time spent with Fez, and recalls seeing Jules for the first time, as she was being driven home from rehab by her mother and sister.

Finding his old dairy desrted, Ruse heads to her old home, but finds the street cordoned off by police. She breaks through the police barrier, evades the police and sneaks into her old room.

Inside, she finds her mother reading the Bible in their living room, holding out a hand for her. She reaches out to her, with images of her father also flickering through her mind. However, these peaceful images become intercut with Rue on Ali’s sofa, struggling to breathe. Her hand drops.

Tragically, everything from that morning is revealed to have been in Rue’s dying mind. Alamo had laced the painkillers with fentanyl, knowing they would kill her. Still banged up after her ordeal in the compound, Rue had taken the Percocet to ease the pain and died on Ali’s sofa from an overdose.

When Ali finds her body in the morning, he prays to God that Rue is finally at peace, before calling Rue’s mother to let her know she had gone.

“It just felt like the honest ending,” creator Sam Levinson explained. “The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it.”

The reunion with Fez was also created to honour the late Angus Cloud, who played the character and died aged 25 after a fentanyl overdose.

Levinson, who has openly spoken about his own previous addictions, said: “I can say with absolute certainty that if I was going through what I went through when I was younger now, I wouldn't be here either. There's no reason to sugarcoat it.

“I wanted to tell this story for Angus, and for people who aren't granted a second chance.”

As news of Rue’s death spreads, Jules, who left her last visit with Rue on a bad note, grieves by silently painting a picture of her first true love from the penthouse she still shares with her older lover.

Laurie and Alamo’s mission to traffic drugs across the border in an ambulance – sending Kitty to get a BBL as a cover – was on the DEA’s radar thanks to Rue.

The trip was successful, with Big Eddy and Laurie’s associate Mitch co-existing despite their mutual loathing. The Silver Slipper girls also got their cosmetic surgery as planned.

However, as the van arrived back, the DEA swooped in. The compound was raided, and Laurie’s crew decided to give themselves in rather than engage in a gunfight.

Bird-loving Laurie, however, had no desire to live in a cage. She died by suicide as helicopters closed in, seeing no other way out.

It turned out the DEA sting was a bust – once Alamo was aware about Rue being an informant, he arranged for Bishop to follow Big Eddy in a second ambulance. While Mitch was preoccupied with picking up the girls, Eddy and Bishop switched ambulances. All the DEA uncovered was a tell-tale rat.

Wayne and Fay,realising ahead of time they were going to be set up, fled the compound on horseback before the cops came in. They are last seen jacking a car on a desert road.

After the horror of finding Nate’s body, Cassie and Maddy head to a diner to take in what had happened, and what could happen next.

“The love story, in a way, this season is between the two of them,” Levinson explained.

“They've been through so much together, and there they are in the end, all they really got is each other and a whole bunch of debt.”

Exhausted from everything, the pair vow to get through their issues together, sharing a tender moment together before getting to work.

Cassie later transforms the trashed house she shared with Nate into a content house for OnlyFans stars.

She offers Lexi a job in the house as a “storyteller” for their raunchy videos, but Lexi – who has started to read the Bible that Rue left in her apartment – turns her down.

When Lexi asks about what happened to Nate, Cassie pretends she has no idea what’s happened to him. They both also reflect on how things ended with Rue, comparing it to the loss of their father.

But after Lexi leaves the house, Cassie breaks down in tears – feeling more lonely than ever.

Meanwhile Maddy and Alamo’s relationship is complicated. At one point a business partner, Maddy is now in debt to the strip club owner and mobster – and he’s using it to his full advantage.

He even at one point floats the idea of marrying Maddy, taking her to a private room at the club (with Bishop removing his gun harness as he enters) and telling her he would like the “American Dream” with her, believing their union would be “biblical”.

Having tested the medication Rue took and discovering it was laced, Ali went on a mission to take down Alamo.

After adding Rue’s name to the book of the dead he has kept of his sponsees who didn’t make it, we later see him at a support meeting, admitting he had relapsed into drink following her death. This death has pushed him over the edge, and he’s realised what he is doing isn’t helping anyone. He resolves to take stronger action to stop the evils of the world.

He saws off a shotgun in his kitchen and heads to the Silver Slipper in his full military uniform – barring the door shut behind him. When Kitty – now with a BBL – offers him a dance, he forces her to get the manager.

When G comes out in Alamo’s place, Ali pulls out his sawn-off shotgun, aims it at G’s groin, and repeats his request. When G confirms Alamo is in the building, Ali asks who gave her the fentanyl. G lies to cover for Alamo, and Ali knows it, pulling the trigger to prove a point.

As the Silver Slipper descends into chaos, Alamo finally makes himself known. Initially using Maddy as a human shield – aware Ali wouldn’t hurt an innocent. Knowing Ali has just three shots left and with his remaining men armed and outnumbering him, Alamo proposes a shoot-out, with Bishop handing him his trademark golden revolver. He tells Kitty to roll a bottle off the bar, and when the bottle falls, they draw.

Alamo plays dirty and tries to fire before the bottle drops, but finds there are no bullets in his gun – leaving him an open target for Ali. Which he does, using all three rounds and coating himself in Alamo’s blood.

The enigmatic Bishop – for reasons that remain his own – betrayed Alamo by removing his bullets. Dropping them on the floor, he declares: “May God Have Mercy.”

He then leaves with Maddy, Kitty, and his pet poodle Snowflake, offering them a ride home.

With his mission complete, Ali ends the season – and the entire series – by heading to a place Rue called the Homestead: a ranch in Texas that once took her in at the start of the series when she was stranded in the desert.

Meeting the family who looked after her, Ali posing as Rue’s father, comes to share the news of her passing.

The family welcomes him in, and he sits down to join them for dinner.

When he’s asked to say Grace, he pays thanks to Rue, and she appears to him at the end of the table as a glow surrounds her.

She is now at peace, and now thanks to her sharing about the homestead, so is he.

In her final voiceover, with the American flag flying outside the homestead, Rue declares: "May God bless us all."
