When it came to putting together the music for the hit movie Barbie, the film’s makers went straight to the top, bringing in the Grammy award-winning DJ, producer and songwriter Mark Ronson along with Mike Snow frontman Andrew Wyatt. Together they curated a soundtrack that fits in perfectly with Greta Gerwig’s direction for the film. Here’s just a few of the highlights from the soundtrack.
Dance the Night – Dua Lipa
The first single from the soundtrack to be released was this disco inspired track from British-Albanian singer Dua Lipa, who also makes an appearance in the film as one of the Barbies. Written by Lipa, Caroline Allin alongside Ronson and Wyatt, the feelgood song describes dancing all night long despite feeling sad on the inside – so thematically on point for the movie. It appears in the film for the huge, 60-person dance number at Barbie’s blowout party. Released as a single, it peaked at number 1 in the UK charts and number 6 in the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Dua Lipa’s fourth UK number one and fifth top Ten hit in the US.

Barbie World – Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice with Aqua
Sorry to disappoint, but Aqua’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” does not appear in the film – most likely because of lingering animosity between the band and Barbie makers Mattel after the latter attempted to sue Danish band for its less than complimentary content. However, the bubbly europop hit is sampled in this sugary drill number from rap icon Nicki Minaj and New York hip hop artist Ice Spice, with the familiar refrain being chosen to close out the film’s official trailer.
Speed Drive – Charli XCX
Bursting with glimmering pink energy, this Charli XCX hit channels the Toni Basil classic Mickey for a pacey hyperpop number that is fittingly used for the scene in the film where Barbie escapes Will Ferrell’s executives from Mattel HQ. It peaked at number nine in the UK singles chart, marking Charli XCX’s sixth top ten single.
I’m Just Ken – Ryan Gosling
If you’ve seen the film, then you’ll know about the epic musical number that sees the Kens take part in a West Side Story-esque face-off, with Ryan Gosling’s Ken opining that “I’m just Ken / Anywhere else I’d be a 10.” Inspired by 1980s power ballads, Mark Ronson recorded a demo of the song after sympathising with the character of Ken. Greta Gerwig and Ryan Gosling both loved the song and rewrote the scene in order to incorporate it. As well as Gosling’s vocals, the song also features Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen on guitar and Foo Fighters’ Josh Freese on drums.

What Was I Made For? – Billie Eilish
Changing the pace a bit, “What Was I Made For?” is a reflective, contemplative ballad from the incomparable Billie Eilish. With heartbreaking lyrics including “Looked so alive, turns out I'm not real / Just something you paid for / What was I made for?” it encompasses the Pinocchio-esque quest that Barbie undergoes to find what it means to be “real”. Released as a single, the song was a huge critical and commercial hit, reaching number one in the UK charts and winning a number of awards, including a Grammy for Song of the Year, plus a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song.
