Everything you need to know about new Sky Original limited series, Amadeus
News just in…a brand-new Sky Original limited series is on its way!
The series is written by acclaimed writer of Giri/Haji and BAFTA-winning Sky Original series, The Lazarus Project, Joe Barton and is a reimagining of Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play.
The official synopsis, as released by Sky, reads:
“Deftly reimagined from Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play, Barton’s adaptation of Amadeus expands and interrogates the mythic rivalry, promising a corrupting symphony of jealousy, ambition and genius. Set within the musical hub of bustling Vienna at the end of the 18th century, twenty-five-year-old Amadeus arrives in the city no longer a child and determined to carve his own path. Recently unemployed and without the management of his father, Amadeus finds an unlikely ally in a young singer who will become his wife, fiery Constanze Weber Mozart. Her connections help bring him into the orbit of the court composer Antonio Salieri, setting the three of them on a collision course that will ultimately define their lives and their legacies for years to come.
As with the play, Barton’s arrangement will be fresh, intimate and irreverent and will feel at times in the hands of the characters themselves. It will ask audiences to bear witness to the making and unmaking of a musical genius by those that loved and envied him most.”
Who is in Amadeus?
Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning actor Will Sharpe will take on the titular role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His past roles include playing Rodney in Giri/Haji and Ethan in the second season of The White Lotus.
On 9 April 2024, Sky announced that BAFTA and Emmy-nominated British actor Paul Bettany will also star in this Sky Original series, portraying the renowned composer Antonio Salieri. Bettany is an acclaimed film, television and theatre star having had roles in A Very British Scandal and WandaVision.
Mozart’s wife Constanze Weber will be played by Gabrielle Creevy. She starred in mental health dramedy In My Skin, which beat the likes of Vigil and Unforgotten to the best drama series BAFTA at the 2022 awards.
