What happens in All Her Fault, Episode 3?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead

After informing the police about Ana and Carrie’s secret friendship, Jenny heads home while Peter arrives back at the house with Lia and Brian. While she didn’t answer their phone calls, Ana turns up at the Irvines, asking to come in. Neither raises any alarm but Marissa texts the detectives to say that she’s there.

Ana tells them she saw the news conference and reports, telling them she knows they would never hurt Milo and doesn’t believe what she’s reading. She then admits she does know Carrie Finch, apologising for lying, but was scared she would get into trouble. She swears she doesn’t know where Milo is.

Pushing for information, Marissa asks what they spoke about. Ana shares that they spoke about the families that they worked for, their rules, and general nanny business. They ask what she said about them, and she said that they lived in a big house and worked with people’s money, sometimes in the millions. Ana also shared the food Milo likes and his bedtime routine with Carrie, who wanted to get to know him and spend time with him. Once they even met in the city, and Carrie was with a man. While it didn’t raise alarm bells at the time, Ana now believes she wanted him to meet Milo.

The police arrive and Ana breaks down in tears because she knows she’ll get in trouble, but Marissa tells her she should be grateful they are here.

The Marathon Man

The next morning, Alcaras and Grecco interview Ana about what she knows about Carrie and what she told her about Milo. Ana said Carrie claimed the man she was with was there by coincidence, as it was the marathon. Peter was running and she was there with Marissa to cheer him on.

She had told Carrie they were going but didn’t expect to see her due to the number of people in attendance. However, she received a text from her and met up by the food trucks while she grabbed Milo a juice. She had left Carrie alone with Milo for a second after leaving her phone at the truck, and when she came back she saw Carrie in an argument with a man, who stormed off. Carrie said he was “just a friend” and chased after him, leaving Ana with Milo. She didn’t see his face.

After the interview, Alcaras heads to the Irvines to update them, noticing Milo’s drawings on the fridge as Marissa makes tea. He asks them about the Chicago Marathon, and if they spotted anything unusual. Peter says no, because he was talking with the other runners, and Marissa says no too but excuses herself. Peter asks for a full update on the investigation, and Alcaras tells him what they know so far.

As Marissa hides in the kitchen, she remembers a conversation with Milo, who didn’t want to go to the marathon. When she asks why, she says that whenever Ana comes, it means that she ends up going to work – and indeed, she had slipped off briefly to chat with a client. Consumed with guilt, she believes that if she didn’t do that, then Milo wouldn’t have met that man, and blames herself. Peter reassures her and tells her it will be OK.

Show Me The Money

Back at the station, Alcaras asks to see drawings made by Milo that they picked up from his school. He then theorises that the reason the man at the marathon bolted was because Ana would know who he was, and it could potentially be someone in the finance industry connected to the Irvines.

At the house, Colin shares his work in putting together a canvassing effort around the community set for later that day. Marissa thanks him for doing it, and he says it's the least he could do, considering she went into business with him despite having a known gambling problem.

When he leaves, he gets a call from a Tracey Munro, who tells him that funds still haven’t reached an account they’re dealing with. He tells her to “trust him” and that the money is on the way.

In the city, Jenny gets a call saying that the pitch she was going in for had been moved back an hour. She realises she won’t be back in time to pick up Jacob, but insists she’ll be there for the meeting. Calling Richie, she’s surprised when he apologises. When she asks why, he tells her that a photo from a birthday party two years ago has gone out online, where wine is seen on a table. People are now inferring she’s a drunk, and that she has a nanny to go out and party. She asks him to take over picking up their son, and he agrees.

Peter receives a new call from someone claiming to have Milo and proves it by saying he had asked to get Fruit Loops, because they’re his favourite. The caller warns him not to tell anyone, or he’ll never know what happens to him, before hanging up. Peter then calls someone else, arranging for money to go into his account, before telling Marissa he needs to go for a drive and clear his head ahead of canvassing.

Lia arrives, picking up Brian, who wants to join the canvas effort despite the amount of walking and being clearly in pain. Together the family club together and head to the event.

Jenny arrives at the office of author Lee Logan to pitch to him their publishers and convince him to sign up to them. He’s dismissive of them, but as she turns to leave catches an issue with something he said and calls him out on it. Her tenacity seems to impress him, and he promises to consider her proposal.

Alcaras meets up with a member of the surveillance team to try and see if they can get a photo of the Marathon Man.

The Canvas Team

As Marissa arrives at the canvassing base, she’s surprised to see Esther, the woman whose house she thought she was picking Milo up from, in the car park. Marissa thanks her for her kindness, and the pair share a hug. Esther reveals she was the business that donated food and drink to keep people energised.

Colin, busy setting things up, meets Sarah, who makes sly swipes about their company being in trouble. He chooses to ignore it, offering her a badge with Milo’s face on it and wishing her a good day.

As Marissa helps Esther get things out of the car, Jenny turns up to join the search. She realises that Jenny recognises her from the news, and later talks to her about it, but Esther says she has no interest in “trash gossip”. Jenny jokes she wish it was true, because right now she’s struggling without a nanny.

As Colin rallies the troops to start the canvassing, Marissa texts Peter to ask where he is. His phone is on his passenger seat as he drives into the city.

The neighbourhood comes out in force, covering trees, knocking on doors and doing everything they can to get Milo’s face out there in a bid to find information. Peter meets a man in a parking lot, who hands him a duffel bag filled with cash which he promptly takes back to his home.

Lia and Brian continue to canvas, but Brian is losing hope they’ll be able to find Milo. Lia is certain he can be found, telling him this will soon be a distant memory. She thanks him for coming with her, and he decides to get an Uber home. Once she leaves, he starts to weep from the amount of pain he’s in, having hidden it from her.

As the effort wraps up, Colin shares with Lia that no one had seen anything at all, and that their attempts were fruitless.

Marissa and Jenny head to talk about their experience in the public eye. Peter arrives and claims that he had broken down in tears on his drive and couldn’t bring himself together enough to be there. Marissa shares her fears that Milo might actually be gone, especially after so long with no ransom.

As Jenny drives home, she gets a call from her team to tell her that Lee Logan has not only agreed to sign up to them but wants her to deal with his entire back catalogue. She’s delighted, meaning she finally has something to celebrate.

Alcaras receives a call from his wife, who vents her frustration over an incident with their son, revealing he’s non-verbal and she didn’t know what he wanted. He reassures her she’s a great mother, and that things like that come with being a parent.

He then gets a brainwave. Heading back to the surveillance team, he notices a glimmer of light coming from a rooftop – realising it would be a camera. He hopes that the picture would be online and geotagged, making it easier to trace.

End of the Day

When Jenny gets home, her happy moment is quashed by Richie, who immediately complains their son was being disruptive and complaining about everything while making himself a sandwich. He congratulates her and then leaves, leaving the dirty cutlery, open jars and messy cutting board on the side for Jenny to clean up.

Back at the Irvines, Marissa grabs a bottle of wine, while Peter gets changed. As he does so, he goes into Milo’s room, both silently weeping over their missing son.

Colin calls Tracey back and instructs her to use money in a trust he’s looking after to replenish the money in the account she was chasing. The trust belongs to Lia Irvine.

As Alcaras manages to find a photo that finally identifies the Marathon Man, Esther returns home to watch the local news. On her sideboard is a photograph with the Marathon Man himself.
