It's the year 1647 and fear of witchcraft is prevalent. The willingness to scapegoat outsiders under the banner of Christianity created an environment in which few are safe. Here, witchfinding has blossomed, as `experts' achieve hero status by extracting confessions, by any means necessary. A witchfinder played by Tim Key transports a suspected witch played by Daisy May Cooper across East Anglia to a trial that could change the trajectory of their lives. `The Witchfinder' plays with the conventions of historical dramas from a comedic standpoint to great effect.
