Michael Portillo, presenter of `Great British Railway Journeys', `Great Continental Railway Journeys' and `Great American Railroad Journeys', embarks on an adventure to India to experience the country through its extensive railway system. Portillo brings along with him a copy of Bradshaw's Handbook of Indian, Foreign and Colonial Travel which was published at the zenith of the British Raj in 1913. Following its' century-old advice, Portillo travels through mountain ranges, deserts and vast plains to visit palaces and temples. As he travels, Portillo learns about the considerable consequences of the British-engineered railway, which helped to unite a vast and disparate country to lay the groundwork for Indian independence from British colonial rule. Portillo beings on the Amritsar to Shimla route, continuing on from Lucknow to Kolkata, Mysuru to Chennai and Jodhpur to Delhi through India's famous Golden Triangle.
